Do you shower before going to the gym in the morning?

For those of you who get up and go straight to the gym; do you shower at home beforehand?

I always jump in to the shower for a quick freshen up before leaving the house and heading to the gym. I then have a “proper” shower, including hair washing, after my gym session before getting in with my day.

There are some people at the gym who I actively avoid standing near as they have a “musty” smell and I don’t like to be around it.

So, AIBU to assume that it’s polite (can’t think of a better word) to shower before the gym even if it is the first thing you’re going to do that day?

I shower post workout (evening) then in the morning. If for some reason I haven't showered in the morning then I'll have one before heading to the gym.

The worst is Saturday & Sunday morning, its not fun to stand by some people. I don't need to smell garlic & booze, cheers.

Tobleroney · 10/01/2022 21:44

I dunno, it seems either you're really judgemental about this musty smell, or you're really paranoid and a bit neurotic about people judging you. It's the gym. No one's going to be sniffing your armpits on the way in. Crazy waste of water & neurosis IMO

@zurala

Always shower before going anywhere! I think it's grim people are going out without washing. Ugh.
I shower in the evening before bed. I don't get dirty overnight so there's not really anything "grim" about going out without having a shower
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/01/2022 21:46

I used to find the grunters more annoying g than the smells.

Although sweaty feet were a bit mych

Delatron · 10/01/2022 21:51

I do but I am well aware this makes me a bit strange and it’s not the norm. A quick shower just wakes me up and makes me feel fresher. Then put on nice clean gym clothes. I do cold showers too again to wake me up. Completely get that others don’t have time/think it’s a waste.

Occasionally I’ll shower before a run which is ridiculous!

Delatron · 10/01/2022 21:52

Another disclaimer. I don’t shower before bed. If I did I may not shower again in the morning.

Bananaramram · 10/01/2022 21:52

It really depends. Some nights I get hot in bed so I might have a quick (literally two minutes) in the shower, just to freshen up, before the gym. Other times I don’t bother. I always shower after my workouts but I don’t think it’s good for your skin to shower too much.

This is 100% going to turn into a typical MN 'cleaner than thou' thread, populated by weird neurotic women who shower AT LEAST 10 times a day and wouldn't dream of having sex without a full Domestos rub-down...

lap90 · 10/01/2022 21:56

No. It's unnecessary knowing i'll be showering an hour or so later post workout and I don't have the time.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 10/01/2022 21:56

Sometimes I'm rowing at 7am then running in the afternoon so I don't have a shower in the morning AND I wear the same kit...
It's a great way to ensure social distancing.

hannahbeth · 10/01/2022 22:00

I do! But my husband thinks I'm mental! Grin

roundtable · 10/01/2022 22:03

I have a strip wash with a flannel and a bit of soap but not usually a shower before an am class.

However, I always end up having 2 showers if I go to the gym in the evening.

Don't worry, if it starts getting repetitive I'll mention that I wash my gym kit in with my tea towels and all hell will break loose Grin

@AuntyBumBum

Good girl yourself, so. Grin

Youngatheart00 · 10/01/2022 22:09

No way. Might do a quick wash and always brush my teeth though!

Parques · 10/01/2022 22:10

Shower before gym always. I also always shower at home before swimming! Grin I know this makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever!

And we wonder why the world is burning...

Seriously, though, why? Why do you do this?

You're laughing at yourself in the comment, so why do you do this? You must realise it's really weird?

Dontsayyouloveme · 10/01/2022 22:13

Yes I do, but only if I’ve had a menopausal night sweat!

Snoken · 10/01/2022 22:15

Yes, I always have a shower before. I always have a shower within 10-15 minutes of waking up. Any longer than that and I start to feel clammy, cold and kind of sweaty. I really don't know why, but I always need a shower first thing or my skin feels weird and unpleasant.

Dontsayyouloveme · 10/01/2022 22:15

AffIt what’s weird about cleaning yourself of all your sweat and dead skin etc, before getting into a public swimming pool? They have showers in most pools and ask you to shower before entering the pool. 🤷🏻‍♀️

damekindness · 10/01/2022 22:15

I always go unwashed in the morning - the showers at my gym are way better than mine and I feel like I get value for money for my fairly extortionate membership by showering there

Bringonsummer19 · 10/01/2022 22:17

No way, but I do wear clean clothes to the gym

OrangeShark27 · 10/01/2022 22:18

It's madness to shower before the gym. Gyms are dirty and smelly, your going to sweat and will need a wash afterwards, it's pointless. There are people who smell at the gym but honestly it's the gym it's fine. Your allowed to be not perfectly clean at the gym.

I dont think anyone is that smelly overnight that they desperately need to shower before going to the gym. Especially if it's 4.45am (night time), I will shower afterwards.

latetothefisting · 10/01/2022 22:19

I have never stood close enough to smell someone at the gym, even before covid.

Two showers within an hour or so of each other? Seriously? That's great for the environment....

LouLou789 · 10/01/2022 22:20

When I used to go to the gym first thing I would have a quick flannel wash (pits and bits) and put on all clean stuff (maybe leggings lasted a couple of days tho) drop the kids at school and go to the gym. Didn’t want to get showered there so came home smelly, had a shower, got dressed properly inc second new pants of the day, ate a banana and logged on to work. However I didn’t need to start till 10 so very spoiled!
Since the menopause I’m deffo more neutral smell-wise (or sadly deluded)
