Do you shower before going to the gym in the morning?

For those of you who get up and go straight to the gym; do you shower at home beforehand?

I always jump in to the shower for a quick freshen up before leaving the house and heading to the gym. I then have a “proper” shower, including hair washing, after my gym session before getting in with my day.

There are some people at the gym who I actively avoid standing near as they have a “musty” smell and I don’t like to be around it.

So, AIBU to assume that it’s polite (can’t think of a better word) to shower before the gym even if it is the first thing you’re going to do that day?

What a waste of time and water. Plus all that washing is so bad for your skin.

God no... I do steal dp deodorant rather than mine as it's smelly and wash my face.

Me too. I always shower (and wash my hair) first thing every morning before going anywhere, including the gym. That means getting up at 4.45am 3 weekdays when I'm at the gym by 6am, and up 1 hour later at 5.45am on the other 2 weekdays for the gym. I shower again after the gym.

Absolutely not. I'd guess the musty smell is clothes OP; I've encountered some absolute stinkers on the start line of races - they can't possibly be that sweaty before they've run a step, so it must be stale kit < not envy.

My pits stink in the morning so no way would I put clothes on and get stinkier. I have a quick wash before going to classes. Dh must smell less than me in the morning as he just sprays antiperspirant before putting his gym gear on.

Maybe it’s clothes then rather than the actual person. It’s a musty fuggy smell, rather than sweat IYSWIM and some people smell of it on the way in to the gym before they’ve made it to the gym floor.

In that case showering won't help you, the clothes need to go in the washing machine.

Nope. I shower in the morning and evening. I don't wake up smelling musty.

Far more likely to be their gym clothes, which can smell musty even after washing. Smells seem to stick to the fibres, and when your body heats up it "activates" the smell. I soak mine overnight in a bucket with water and some vinegar every now and again to keep them fresh, and then wash them on a cool wash with some baking power in the detergent drawer.

In the dim distant past when I was a gym user I always showered beforehand (and yes that was at 5.45am). But I'd say I was definitely in the minority there and I don't think I'd expect others to do the same. I certainly never noticed anyone smelling 'musty'

Good Lord, no. I’ve got a horse to muck out before I go to the gym, definitely no point showering first.

OMG no! I run before work a couple of times a week - no way would I ever shower before exercise. Biggest waste of time ever. I shower in the morning- either after a run if I've gone first thing, or before work if not. And if I'm running at lunchtime, I'll wait until after my run until I shower. Showering first thing and then again at lunchtime would be ridiculous (I'm WFH, not seeing anyone).

Such a waste of resources all this showering twice within an hour or 2. Ridiculous.

Yep I'm an up and showered person too, I used to get showered, into clean gym clothes, drop off the kids to school, head to exercise, then home to a full shower. I've been stuck next to people who smell like old pajamas that needed changing days ago when exercising, it's bloody awful, you get an odd whiff of deodorant and mouthwash but the musty smell is overpowering it all. I doubt they think they are a bit smelly.

I'm well aware I smell sweaty at the gym after the treadmill or cardio. I don't care because it's a gym and people get sweaty. I honestly wouldn't care about judgemental people saying I smell 'musty' whatever that is.

I only have a shower before going to the gym if we’d had sex that night, other than that I just brush my teeth.

I dont shower before bed so my last shower would have been the previous morning.

I think you'll find the very nice ladies shower before the gym, after the gym and in between each set.

Nah not a chance. I'm up at 4:45 to get there for 5:30, I'm not waking up earlier to shower. I shower last thing at night and wash in the morning. I don't smell, well at the end of my workout when I'm sweaty I may do but everyone does 😂

that’s just ridiculous.

So: you get up, have a shower, and go to say the gym come home and have shower. Nip to the shops. Have another shower before going out to meet friends. Come home. Shower again before school run. Go home. Nip to shops again in the evening. But don’t forget to shower before you go!

4.45am is the middle of the night in my book.
