To say some chocolates are distinctively middle class?

MIL asked us if we thought our ferrero rocher tower was "aspirational" and said she knows ferrero rochers to be the aspirational chocolates of the working class.

This baffled me. My family has always sort of transcended class - my mum was upper middle, my day was very working class. But he was a doctor and she a nurse. We were probably lower middle growing up if I had to put a tag on it, but our mixed extended family meant that we weren't aware of what was "posh" or MC / WC. We certainly wouldn't have known which chocs has the markings of which class.

Therefore MNers - lightheartedly - tell me which chocolates you view as typically middle class? We discussed it as a family and we couldn't come up with a single one!

Tony's Chocolonely
Anything called Monty anything
Booja Booja
Local artisan stuff

Don't get me wrong, I like these.
Don't love Ferrero Rocher and wouldn't consider them posh.
Even Hotel Chocolat is probably a bit mainstream/common these days (although they make my favourites)

madisonbridges · 30/12/2021 23:59

I'm not interested in WC or MC chocolates. What are the upper class chocolates? Because I think you'll find those are the ones I eat.

WeThreeKingsofOrientAre · 30/12/2021 23:59

The one that immediately springs to my mind is Prestat. They’re lovely actually. I would recommend - to everyone!

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 30/12/2021 23:59

mmmmm Green and Blacks maybe? Or anything from Waitrose?

Matchmakers definitely transcend class...

HyggeTygge · 30/12/2021 23:59

We were lower middle too, my mum used to get a Walnut Whip on her birthday.

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 31/12/2021 00:00

Apparently Ferrero Rocher saved Nutella...... Is this true or an urban myth?

I love that you have a Ferraro Rocher tower!

thekissoflife · 31/12/2021 00:00

So what chocolate do genuinely posh people eat?

WorraLiberty · 31/12/2021 00:00

No middle class chocolates here

I send my Marsbar to the local grammar school though

OneLlamaOpenSleigh · 31/12/2021 00:01

Charbonnel et Walker
Prestat

Probably was Godiva, but not now they’re everywhere.

Any brand you can only buy in Waitrose / Booths / middle class department stores!

Isausernameavailable · 31/12/2021 00:01

Why do you care? Enjoy what you like

HyggeTygge · 31/12/2021 00:01

Deffo Green & Black. I'd say they were one of the first MC chocolates that seem to have paved the way for all the current ones? I remember when they were fairly new (maybe 20 years ago!) and loving the Maya Gold one, thinking it was vair poshe.

HyggeTygge · 31/12/2021 00:03

I got some Guylian seahorse things for Christmas - I know at one point I considered them pretty classy but they're in all the cheapy shops now (so I've heard...... ) - I tried them and they were way too sweet, and I've got a pretty sweet tooth.

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 31/12/2021 00:03

We don't my dear, too busy patching up the roof of the Great hall again, patting the rump of various fine fillies and stomping about in battered jodhpurs and riding boots handed down five generations, that cost more than the average 3 bed semi, Huzzah!

MoreHairyThanScary · 31/12/2021 00:04

Green and blacks definitely not MC

Maybe Booja booja or montezumas definitely prestat

Leonidas?

Houseofvelour · 31/12/2021 00:04

Handmade chocolate is especially fancy.
Tony chocolony is middle class imo (and tastes the same as choceur from Aldi)

I love them! Aldi's version are cheaper and taste nicer.

Tony’s definitely

HyggeTygge · 31/12/2021 00:07

@NalPolishRemover

Leonidas?
I'd have said they're posh/special occasion (they are very very good). Same as Prestat, Charbonnel etc. Depends on what you think of as MC I guess - basically Waitrose/M&S.
HelloBunny · 31/12/2021 00:08

Stoopid post is missing my pic of “Privilege” Dealz answer to Ferrero Rocher.

Youngatheart00 · 31/12/2021 00:08

I think Tony’s chocolonely is horrible! Just not nice tasting, although I appreciate the brand does good

Boutique brands are MC, most of the mass market ones are now vile - we had a tim of quality street this year and the chocolate is nothing like it used to be
