To say some chocolates are distinctively middle class?

MIL asked us if we thought our ferrero rocher tower was "aspirational" and said she knows ferrero rochers to be the aspirational chocolates of the working class.

This baffled me. My family has always sort of transcended class - my mum was upper middle, my day was very working class. But he was a doctor and she a nurse. We were probably lower middle growing up if I had to put a tag on it, but our mixed extended family meant that we weren't aware of what was "posh" or MC / WC. We certainly wouldn't have known which chocs has the markings of which class.

Therefore MNers - lightheartedly - tell me which chocolates you view as typically middle class? We discussed it as a family and we couldn't come up with a single one!

Chocolate and refined sugar feature in my day to day life; when living in Belgium, it was obligatory. You got a biscuit or a chocolate with your coffee, and even the supermarket bars were good quality. Most of the bakers did their own chocolate, and there were always different ones depending on the season. I miss that.

My poshest UC friend has a secret stash of chocolate she hides from her children. Last time I went for lunch it was full of mini Dime bars.
We have a local chocolateir who has recently set up shop. I haven’t tried them yet but I suppose it harks back to the days before mass production when every town and city had several shops that made their own sweets and chocolates. That’s where the posh people used to shop.

Anything Vahlrona is worth a punt.

There is an M&S cooks ingredient ‘blonde’ chocolate bar that gives Caramac a run for the money. It has the smooth creamy caramel richness (TY Miriam) without the sickly sweet aftertaste.

Valhrona spread 🤤

I am not sure if chocolate falls neatly across class.
Maybe it does so through intensive branding & fancy packaging , but for me any chocolate is all about the taste & texture.

Not all 70% chocolates are the same, I have some distinct favourites & some well known or expensive brands make me gag.

I grew up scoffing loads of Cadburys Daily Milk, Whole Nut, Malteasers but I often raided my Grandma’s stash of Bournville as I had the taste for dark chocolate as a child.

We get Quality street for Xmas, and then some posh chocs, Hotel Chocolat has gone downhill in an effort to keep prices low, but this year tried a luxe independant brand called indulgence - gorgeous and great if you have nut/seed allergies.

Ideally if we were still in England we'd head over to Bruges, and go to the choclatiers on Simon Stevinplein, then a coffee advocaat in Joes Cigar bar.

Not posh at all btw!

Svalberg · 31/12/2021 01:15

Leonidas are only posh if you choose the box size & chocolates in one of their Belgian stores and avoid the marzipan ones Wink
And F&M ones are posher if you get them directly from their supplier, cutting out Fortnums altogether Grin

LilyRed · 31/12/2021 01:16

aaargh that should read avocaat! Just what you need in the cold

Alayalaya · 31/12/2021 01:17

If you fly first class with BA they serve you Lauden chocolates. So I expect they are classed as posh?

Monty27 · 31/12/2021 01:21

Haha way back in the 80s I knew an older woman who was devastated when Ferraro rocher was apparently special cos she'd go to Harrods to buy them and everyone and their dogs were buying them in the supermarket 😂😂

FestiveFruitloop · 31/12/2021 01:26

Dairy Milk for me. I'll get my coat. 😂

BlowDryRat · 31/12/2021 01:26

DH bought me a beautiful box of Venchi chocolates for my birthday. I'd say they were pretty posh.

Player20868 · 31/12/2021 01:30

I wouldn't say I'm a chocoholic exactly, but....Prestat, anything artisan

My all time favourites come from a tiny little place called Chocolate Utopia in Nottingham, though my sister swears by Butler's...couldn't say we're middle class though, anything but! We're also often tempted by Tony Chocolonely and Hotel Chocolat, though growing up Thornton's was a treat, with Mars and Cadbury's sort of "everyday"....now I know there's an Aldi tastealike for Tony's though I'll definitely be on the lookout for it.

All the "ordinary" brands now just taste of palm oil...

And if we're talking about hot chocolate, the best I've ever tasted was a Spanish brand we found in a deli in Ludlow - they didn't have it last time we were there though and I've not managed to track it down online either.

@thekissoflife

So what chocolate do genuinely posh people eat?
They probably get a box made up from independent chocolatiers in Paris. Although Her Majesty likes Charbonnel et Walker according to Google.
Pieceofpurplesky · 31/12/2021 01:35

Posh chocolate can be any make but must contain something that is usually a perfume preferred by elderly ladies like my old gran with a blue rinse such as rose, lavender or violet.

Debauve & Gallais - DH's fraightfully smart godmother likes chocolates from here. They are wincingly ££.

Questions like this remind me of how happy I am to live in a country where class isn't a thing.
