To say some chocolates are distinctively middle class?

MIL asked us if we thought our ferrero rocher tower was "aspirational" and said she knows ferrero rochers to be the aspirational chocolates of the working class.

This baffled me. My family has always sort of transcended class - my mum was upper middle, my day was very working class. But he was a doctor and she a nurse. We were probably lower middle growing up if I had to put a tag on it, but our mixed extended family meant that we weren't aware of what was "posh" or MC / WC. We certainly wouldn't have known which chocs has the markings of which class.

Therefore MNers - lightheartedly - tell me which chocolates you view as typically middle class? We discussed it as a family and we couldn't come up with a single one!

A box of Maltesers

Lillyhatesjaz · 31/12/2021 00:12

I have some home made rum truffles as per the Delia Smith Christmas cook book they are delicious and would be posh if they weren't all slightly wonky and different sizes

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 31/12/2021 00:12

@HyggeTygge great for collectors 😂

HelloBunny · 31/12/2021 00:12

I got some Guylian Seashells in Dealz. Absolute muck! Should have known they were too goos to be true... Used to be lovely!
Got the Aldi dupes last year, they were better. But the Leonidas ones are closest to the real thing.
I would have said that Thornton’s, back in the day, would have been the posh chocolate gift of choice.

JocastaElastic · 31/12/2021 00:17

Rococo chocolates are middle-class, but Maltesers are truely egalitarian.

Beaconoflight · 31/12/2021 00:17

I get my chocolates straight from Bruges, you cant beat the taste! I am a proud french working class lady 😂

antisocialsocialclub · 31/12/2021 00:18

All chocolates will be eaten by me Grin I don’t discriminate

Mylittlepotofjoy · 31/12/2021 00:19

Charbonnel Et Walker And prestat are my posh indulgence Grin rather costly but totally yummy

MrsToothyBitch · 31/12/2021 00:21

I'm partial to House of Dorchester Rose Creams myself... see also the own brand ones from Lidl that don't have Violet Creams in the same box to palm off on mum. Grin

WildishBambino · 31/12/2021 00:21

Prestat occasionally turns up in TKMaxx. Lovely stuff.

bubblesbubbles11 · 31/12/2021 00:22

Basically if you can identify an independent local chocolatiare they will no doubt be pricey but will be streets ahead of mass produced in terms of flavour and freshness.
I am not upper class but I imagine these are the kind of places UC would go to.
I do not live locally to this but have ordered chocolates here a few times in my long life and I have never been disappointed at the taste (onlly the price tag!!)

Actually posh people eat whatever they fancy because they don't care what anyone else thinks.

I'll eat whatever's going tbh. But because I have no filter when it comes to chocolate, not because I'm posh.

mrdarcyfan · 31/12/2021 00:23

Maltesers are classless.

CounsellorTroi · 31/12/2021 00:27

M & S Swiss Chocolates.

GoldMoon · 31/12/2021 00:29

For the past two years we have had Leonidas.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 31/12/2021 00:30

Poncy Irish chocolate like Lily O'Brien's dessert collection, or those weird honeycomb chocolate buttons.

Importing Whittaker's.

Tisaxon · 31/12/2021 00:30

Charbonnel et Walker was the chocolate of choice of that dreadful old sleaze, Edward VII — and still has a royal warrant…?

HelloBunny · 31/12/2021 00:30

If olden days chocolate boxes were to come back... A box or Weekend for me!

I don’t know about middle class but posh chocolates for me are Venchi & Laderach.

I have them on special occasions and make them last.

I don’t really care what people think to be honest. I eat whatever brand of chocolates I think taste nice. That can range from galaxy to Laderach

roseblosssom · 31/12/2021 00:33

I'v been described as upper class before and eat Leonidas as my first choice. I certainly wouldn't turn down a quality street though. That Tony's chocolate is grim though.
