To say some chocolates are distinctively middle class?

MIL asked us if we thought our ferrero rocher tower was "aspirational" and said she knows ferrero rochers to be the aspirational chocolates of the working class.

This baffled me. My family has always sort of transcended class - my mum was upper middle, my day was very working class. But he was a doctor and she a nurse. We were probably lower middle growing up if I had to put a tag on it, but our mixed extended family meant that we weren't aware of what was "posh" or MC / WC. We certainly wouldn't have known which chocs has the markings of which class.

Therefore MNers - lightheartedly - tell me which chocolates you view as typically middle class? We discussed it as a family and we couldn't come up with a single one!

I think the more harder to find and exclusive a chocolate is then it becomes 'posh'. it also becomes more expensive to us mere mortals as its only available more discerning stockists. If it's readily available in places like Costco and home bargains like Godiva is now then it loses that exclusive appeal. A product needs to be not so readily available to be truly exclusive and luxurious.

Is your MIL called Hyacinth by any chance? Christ.

My Gran is UMC and her favourite chocolates are Lindt and Maltesers, she’s easily pleased.

Tub, like side and platter makes my skin crawl, oddly.

Anyway. Lindt all the way. ( may have said that before,)

Twinkleylight · 10/01/2022 21:41

Lindt chocolate makes me feel ill, it's too waxy and sickly sweet. It sits very heavily in my tummy and makes me feel ill.

No, but the chocolates look very similar, the box was cream & the lady on the front was like a typical old white haired lady, Id love to find them cos they were so nice!

I had the misfortune of putting a Hotel Chocolate chocolate in my mouth last night - I should have spat it out, it was revolting - but I persisted but was a little more hesitant with the next attempt - tried four looking for one acceptable option - they were all completely awful, I was never a big fan but what happened to them - are they going the way of Thortons?

I miss those boxes of chocolates that used to have pretty pictures on the lid. Only seemed to appear at Christmas, sometimes the box top was padded.

Back then a box of chocolates was a real teat and ooh'd over.
