To say some chocolates are distinctively middle class?

MIL asked us if we thought our ferrero rocher tower was "aspirational" and said she knows ferrero rochers to be the aspirational chocolates of the working class.

This baffled me. My family has always sort of transcended class - my mum was upper middle, my day was very working class. But he was a doctor and she a nurse. We were probably lower middle growing up if I had to put a tag on it, but our mixed extended family meant that we weren't aware of what was "posh" or MC / WC. We certainly wouldn't have known which chocs has the markings of which class.

Therefore MNers - lightheartedly - tell me which chocolates you view as typically middle class? We discussed it as a family and we couldn't come up with a single one!

When I think of middle class chocolates, I think of those naff artisan chocolates.

Pierre Marcolini or any of the chocolatiers in Brussels. Miss living there but soooo bad for the waistline!

@Breadstick25 - you’re right there. My stepdad used to go there on business a lot and the only thing my mum and I asked for was Belgian handmade chocolates mmmmm

Cadbury and galaxy are not even chocolates. They are confectionery as the cocoa content is so low.

Shoutout for toblerone!!!

@ShippingNews

Questions like this remind me of how happy I am to live in a country where class isn't a thing.
Same. Mumsnetters really are obsessed with class though. I mean who honestly gives a stuff, just eat the chocs that you like!
HiJenny35 · 31/12/2021 02:32

Every year oh boss sends us posh ie expensive, chocolates as a Christmas gift. They always without fail taste like c*. Posh box and high price tag and you can make some people who desire to think they are upper middle class want them.

2021s · 31/12/2021 02:32

To be honest, to watch people subscribe to any class for any reason never mind chocolate is depressing

mathanxiety · 31/12/2021 02:39

What is this madness?

bintang · 31/12/2021 02:53

I liked Lauden, but didn't like Pierre Marcolini. Tony's is also too sweet. chococo- some were nice, some were v odd. Hotel Chocolat have thankfully removed the palm oil this year.

My favourite are La Reine Astrid, but F&M have stopped stocking them, so I can only get them in France or Belgium.

bintang · 31/12/2021 02:55

Willie's is nice too, actually, the blue 'milk of the stars' one is really, really good.

bintang · 31/12/2021 02:56

Lindt was so classy back in the 70s. Lindor balls are just greasy grim palm oil-ridden baubles of horror.

Puccini Bomboni is the best chocolate I've ever eaten.

Hotyogahotchoc · 31/12/2021 03:11

Charbonnel et Walker

My favourite and still quite expensive

Hotyogahotchoc · 31/12/2021 03:13

I do like Ferraro Rocher, Lindt and Guylian but think they may mainstream to be MC or UC.

Maybe Ferraro...

Chocolate lovers are no class of people. I love to try all different brands of good chocolate when I come across chocolate brands that I havent seen before, whatever the price, I will just try them. I am a classless person, I never talk about classes of people, it's rather a stupid subject.

YouokHun · 31/12/2021 03:40

The slightly more upmarket Belgian chocolate from Wittamer or Pierre Marcolini (both found in the Grand Sablon in Brussels and in the case of PM in London too). Not sure they’re middle class but well worth getting hold of them as they are much better than Leonidas.

I’m still mourning the tragedy of Cadbury being sold and the flavour being changed…

I'm WC but love good chocolate and buy mine from this local chocolatier.

Kanaloa · 31/12/2021 04:08

I think mumsnet can now officially close down. I’m convinced that every single thing has now been pored over and carefully class identified so people can be aware that they are thoroughly inferior in their matching jammies with their Xmas decs up too early munching ferrero rocher with their kids Jackson and Kai. Probably lying on their crushed velvet couch in their grey living room drinking Prosecco. Unlike the Uber posh middle and upper classes (who we should of course aspire to be as much like as possible but should always remember we will simply NEVER be like them because their grace and class just oozes out naturally).

Kanaloa · 31/12/2021 04:10

And of course every time the working classes scrabble in the box for another ferrero rocher their Pandora bracelet will jangle crudely.

SD1978 · 31/12/2021 04:14

I can't believe no one has mentioned a vientetta.......surely that was always the epitome of class and poshness.......

SleepingStandingUp · 31/12/2021 04:38

Perhaps it's how one ears the ferrero richer?
