To ditch the Daily Mail

Realised that reading all the crap in DM was just depressing me. Finally ditched it. Will use Sky news for factual updates. Feel so much better already. A few years ago I ditched East Enders - similarly depressing.

@LadyWithLapdog

It looks like the Financial Times and the independent do not belong to IPSO either. I don't have any in-depth knowledge but I think this is just whataboutery when the disgust is with the articles in the DM.
Let's talk about whataboutery @LadyWithLapdog.

What about The Guardian reporting on transgressors of the IPSO code without making it clear they do not sign up and so will never be sanctioned by IPSO no matter what they do?

Would you have realised that before I pointed it out? What do think think about that now you know?

What about The Guardian dealing with complaints by their internal procedures unless someone has the money to take them to court? Do you think that is better than an independent procedure which is relatively cost-free? If so why?

What special qualities do you think are possessed by the Guardian, FT and the Independent that makes it okay for them to mark their own homework rather than the other media outlets that subscribe to IPSO?

You can avoid giving an answer by explaining you don't have any in-depth knowledge. But I would regard that as the explanation of someone who hasn't thought about it in depth and respond accordingly.

The Daily Mail is a poisonous shitrag along with the Sun. Both have played a huge role in the UK's lurch to the hard right over the past decade.

LadyWithLapdog · 25/12/2021 07:33

@limitedperiodonly I don't have the answer and this isn't about me. It's about the DM and the bile it spews. Happy Christmas!

Which national newspapers do you not think are right wing poisonous shitrags?

The Guardian, The Independent, The Financial Times, The Times (right-wing, but not a shitrag), the i paper

I think the Independent is crap actually.

Agree about the FT but it's not really a normal newspaper, it's niche.

Agree about the TImes.

The Guardian to me is the epitome of a shitrag. It's just a left wing shitrag. It's dreadful, dreadful, dreadful.

limitedperiodonly · 25/12/2021 14:17

@LadyWithLapdog merry Christmas to you too.

I agree that The Guardian is becoming more and more unreadable. Quite often now I just skim through the headlines before going to BBC News instead.

The Daily Mail and Prozac should be sold together.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 26/12/2021 15:02

@Thedogscollar

The Daily Mail and Prozac should be sold together.
Why - do both treat depression?

I know there's a large contingent of women on MN who don't like Meghan but I'm pleased she won her court case against the DM and its deplorable tactics.

@AlternativePerspective

Have never read it. Am always a bit Hmm when people post links from it here and say “I know it’s the DM but,” if they’re seeing links to it then clearly they read it, so why pretend otherwise?

However, I wouldn’t consider a credible alternative to be sky news. A load of sensationmongering they have on there. I had the app for a while,and I would get notifications with headlines which bear absolutely no resemblance to the actual story they were about.

I have to say I am delighted that Laura Kuensberg is stepping down as political journalist at the bbc. Can’t stand the woman and I don’t know anyone who can.

Agree with you on all points. People who call the Mail the Daily Fail, while quoting from it, make themselves look daft. I remember how Laura K used to strut around wearing pedal pushers on the daily Politics programme. She seemed one of those who have been marked out early for greater things. Giles Dilnot who was on the programme left the BBC as presumably he wasn't going to get any further and Norman Smith who became her deputy, has since also left the BBC.
