To ditch the Daily Mail

Realised that reading all the crap in DM was just depressing me. Finally ditched it. Will use Sky news for factual updates. Feel so much better already. A few years ago I ditched East Enders - similarly depressing.

It’s a populist rag that is a very mixed bag, and very much tries to create the agenda rather than reporting news. I won’t forget the absolute trash and lies they peddled via to Brexit

the80sweregreat · 22/12/2021 19:22

They do like to shoehorn in the cost of the houses or how much the people are worth first.
Especially when if it's a celebrity property.

sjxoxo · 22/12/2021 19:25

What baffles me about the DM is that there isn’t really any ‘news’?? It’s lots of royal family stuff, and then opinion pieces which include some details about a recent event.. the headline titles give you their opinion rather than the actual news? When I skim their headlines they aren’t the same stories that appear on other news outlets like BBC/guardian/inews/BBC/Times. Also hardly any international content other than any issues with France/Brexit..? It makes me cringe! I can’t take it seriously for actual news xo

It's become a matter of pride. The Daily Mail won't drop house prices in their stories precisely because it winds people up.

But they are not wrong. It fascinates people and gets them frothing.

Any Mumsnet thread about places to live gets posts on the first page from people scoffing that they can buy a palace where they live for the price of a shoebox in London even though it's not relevant.

And loads of people on Mumsnet have opinions about celebrities and air them on mainstream forums like AIBU or Chat. Why shouldn't they?

What baffles me is that you boast about skimming headlines and yet feel confident to pronounce on news.
limitedperiodonly · 22/12/2021 21:10

But let me guess @sjxoxo. You're far too busy and important to do that but like other people you have a duty to monitor the Daily Mail to see what stupid people are reading.

Malhao · 22/12/2021 21:14

Sky isn't as blatant with it's "miss truths" but it also distorts the news.

There are VERY few media outlets that I trust so every time I read a news article or hear/see a news story I'm obliged to cross reference it with other sources which I have limited patience for so these days I only trust my own experiences.

Even then I know that people's perspectives all vary so I don't make any firm assumptions on even that

DerAlteMann · 22/12/2021 21:35

@AgathaMystery

I never thought I’d type this but I think DM now has better ‘investigative’ journalism than The Guardian. In the past 18-24 mth it (G) has become a giant op Ed paper written by teenagers. Now that Hadley has gone there is no point. If I want breaking news I go to the Mail. it’s always at least 45 mins ahead of BBC. I also find they are the only paper consistently supporting women-only spaces.

Who would have thought.

Not sure I agree about the Mail, but you're spot on about the Guardian.
StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 22/12/2021 21:40

But where else can you see stories such as animal strictly calendar or houses that look like Hitler?

@Malhao. Surely you have a duty to share the VERY few media outlets you trust and explain why with examples of their exemplary reporting.

Otherwise the rest of us will continue to blunder in the darkness.

So what are they O wise one?

thereisonlyoneofme · 23/12/2021 11:12

Those of you rubbishing the DM do you only read the on line bits or the actual paper, which has very interesting and useful sections/articles,especially on health, finance etc.

ichundich · 23/12/2021 11:17

I never read it regularly, but whenever I looked through a copy at the hairdressers' or at my in-laws, I found it very negative, othering and depressing. Apart from the xenophobia and pro-Brexit stuff there are also lots of stories of people with terminal cancer, domestic abuse, etc., whilst you learn nothing about what's going on in the rest of the world. Eastenders is awful too; I ditched it in 2015 and I am so glad I use my evenings in a more meaningful way now.

thereisonlyoneofme · 23/12/2021 12:32

Yes having terminal cancer is depressing

@LadyWithLapdog

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/dec/24/mail-online-ipso-upholds-complaint-over-town-being-no-go-area-for-white-people

Complaint against DM upheld by IPSO.

That's an IPSO ruling reported in The Guardian. The Daily Mail have transgressed.

It is impossible to raise a complaint with IPSO about the Guardian because they are not a member. Did you know that @LadyWithLapdog? If you did you should have said. Do you know how to complain about an article in The Guardian? I do. It's by their internal complaints division not an independent body.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/12/2021 19:47

Deflection and what about wry.

WindyState · 24/12/2021 19:49

It's all shit.

CorrBlimeyGG · 24/12/2021 19:52

The Daily Mail have transgressed.

The Daily Mail tell outright lies to create hate and division.

Bootikin · 24/12/2021 21:03

Try stepping away from ALL the Murdoch shit if you want to improve your life. Don’t but the Sun. don’t watch Sky.

Read the BBC and for balance read the Guradian. (Sic)

Neither is without fault but you’ll avoid the cognitive decline you were exposing yourself to by exposure to Murdoch.

I can’t believe anyone in U.K. needs this explained to them Tiffany but there you go.

limitedperiodonly · 24/12/2021 23:30

@CorrBlimeyGG

The Daily Mail have transgressed.

The Daily Mail tell outright lies to create hate and division.

I do not agree with you.

Also your point selectively quotes mine and does not address the fact that The Guardian will not submit to IPSO rulings yet have reported on this ruling without disclosing that fact.

The Guardian marks its own homework. Did you realise that?

BurnedToast · 24/12/2021 23:34

I can't stand the 'showcasing' descriptions of women wearing a bikini or shorts or whatever , because you know , they are on holiday. But not according to the DM, they are in fact 'showcasing' their legs or figure. Who actually ever leaves their house to showcase bits of their body? It's not even a thing. It's like something out of the 70s.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/12/2021 23:52

I've complained to the DM on half a dozen occasions. Guess what? Acknowledged receipt and never heard from them again. That's pretty poor. Maybe IPSO is the only way to go in the future with DM?

Tryagainplease · 24/12/2021 23:55

I go to BBC for my main news.
Then dip in to Sky, The Guardian etc

Also check on the Daily Mail…. Mainly because I know it has such a huge following that I like to know what the general population believes at any given moment.

I read all with a critical head.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/12/2021 23:55

It looks like the Financial Times and the independent do not belong to IPSO either. I don't have any in-depth knowledge but I think this is just whataboutery when the disgust is with the articles in the DM.

Tryagainplease · 24/12/2021 23:57

In short, get your news from wherever but never, ever take any of it as gospel.
