To ditch the Daily Mail

Realised that reading all the crap in DM was just depressing me. Finally ditched it. Will use Sky news for factual updates. Feel so much better already. A few years ago I ditched East Enders - similarly depressing.

I get sucked in for the sidebar of shame occasionally, but oh my god the writing! Shock

"She flaunted her curves with a figure hugging outfit and let her raven locks hang loose and finished off with a slick of red lipstick"

Every fucking article. Even my 7 year old could write better copy. I also hate the way they will use unflattering photos of female celebs that show cellulite, stretch marks or some other perfectly normal body feature with the headline "flaunts her figure on the beach". Then next week it's a story about said female celeb 'hitting back at trolls' or 'feeling devastated by online pics'. Yeah, because you fucking set them up for ridicule you twat rag.

ThePostWhatIWrote · 21/12/2021 10:17

Yes the Independent seems the speedy.

Flapjacker48 · 21/12/2021 10:18

Daily mail readers are usually lower middle class airheads.

Flapjacker48 · 21/12/2021 10:20

@Mouseonmychair The telegraph not a "campaigning" paper?! It certainly is especially for commercial landlords (and funds involved in commercial property, the Church of England and the right wing "covid recovery group"

LadyWithLapdog · 21/12/2021 10:20

The Guardian isn't negative about the UK and women. Why would you think that? Just because it hasn't a massive poppy or Union Jack or whatever the right wing rags rope in their readers with?

ThePostWhatIWrote · 21/12/2021 10:21

"Lol" all you like @TheCatsHaveKilledTheGonks.
It's very well written if it has covered the particular story I wish to be updated on.
If I want in depth I look elsewhere.

RovenderKitt · 21/12/2021 10:21

Wouldn’t read it if it was the last ‘news’paper on Earth. Full of hate. Worst thing about it though is it seems to have a view of itself as semi-intelligent. At least the Sun knows what it is.

WorraLiberty · 21/12/2021 10:23

You've just insulted around half the posters on this thread Xmas Confused
Flapjacker48 · 21/12/2021 10:24

Also the Daily mail generally insist that all women in their photoshoots for stories wear nude heels and dresses. This could be a story on anything from buying a house to a tragic death.

Also the EVERY story must include the line "who lives in a £X amount house", disgustingly even used in the Sarah Everard murder when talking about her parents.

DropYourSword · 21/12/2021 10:26

What the hell were you doing ever reading it to begin with! It's awful!

I thought this Grin

although the Mail on Sunday makes me feel nostalgic as my parents used to get it

daisyjgrey · 21/12/2021 10:27

You were wildly unreasonable to have started reading it in the first place, and to have only just given it up!

daisyjgrey · 21/12/2021 10:28

@ThePostWhatIWrote

Sorry, are you joking or just incredibly stupid?

Benjispruce5 · 21/12/2021 10:29

I only read the Guardian app now. No media outlet is perfect.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 21/12/2021 10:31

YWBU to ever read that poisoned right wing rag in the first place!

KerryWeaver · 21/12/2021 10:31

Want a mean-spirited, narrow-minded, misogynistic, scaremongering, anxious outlook on life?

Well then, definitely read The Daily Mail.

ThePostWhatIWrote · 21/12/2021 10:31

Neither but I am bored now.
Want short clear precis of a news story ( not the latest internatuonal, business or science breakthrough but mainstream news in your area of the UK. )
Them have a quick look at Sun website.
House style is written for easy comprehension which is actually a journalistic challenge.

madisonbridges · 21/12/2021 10:32

All news sources are depressing and a lot of it is inaccurate and that's from daily mail to guardian and the independent. Because there's such a rush to get stuff online there's no serious fact checking. Then it gets repeated in other media, on SM wven on live broadcasts and somehow it is a total fact. Then when the real facts come to light no one's interested and the lie stays in the mind.

And everything'written about to make you scared because that's what makes you come back. You need to read more to try and reassure yourself.

I remember last year the DM was speculating on what the govt my do over a restriction. Turned out the govt didn't do what the DM speculated it wiukd. The SM then had a headline of, "the govt backtracks. Its a shambles. Chaos." But that was based on a journalist speculation and not on anything the govt had said. I don't see how that behaviour helps anyone.

I always knew are media was bad but the amount of lies and bad information that they put out there on a daily basis was a revelation to me. And I didn't see that the main news channels, including the BBC and Sky were any better. They just were so busy trying to fill the air with news when there east any, that they had to trawl around anyone who would give a different opinion, no matter how alone they were in that view.

I hardly read any news anymore and I'm so much better for it and not really that much less informed!

mnp321 · 21/12/2021 10:35

I read it as it's free and the app is easy to use. I take much of it with a pinch of salt, although I find some of the readers' comments entertaining (and/or worrying).

I also read The Guardian, The Independent, The Telegraph (someone gave me their free subscription) and my free articles on the FT.

madisonbridges · 21/12/2021 10:36

I'm also bored of seeing people on here calling it the daily fail and apologising for quoting it, yet it's clear they must read it regularly. Ne a grown up and acknowledge reading it without snark or apology or don't read it.

Anyone thinking that the guardian gives more accurate facts than the DM is delusional. Left wing media is just as troublesome as right wing.

celiamary · 21/12/2021 10:36

Two points to make

  1. Most of the posts are by people who won't pay for a newspaper but complain about the quality.
  2. Have I missed comments about the Independent. I used to read it.

Have you actually read it in the last 18 months? They hate women now just as much as the Mail, just in a different way.

LuluBlakey1 · 21/12/2021 10:45

I am all for freedom of the Press but would be prepared to close the Daily Mail down. It distorts, manipulates, presents inaccurate info to instil anger and fear into its readers about whatever its current objective it. At the minute it is the interests of big business and their potential falls in profit through any further lockdown/restrictions, and the removal of Johnson as Tory leader and PM (clearly linked because he isn't doing what they want to protect big business). Their other two objectives are privatising the NHS (in the interests of big business again) and getting rid of the BBC as a state funded broadcaster (political interest and again business interests).
Their presentation of data linked to Covid would be laughable if it wasn't dangerous. They are intent on stirring the population and the Tory party up to the point of social unrest.
I really worry about their influence and what damage they are causing.

Also, they are immigration obsessed, of course.

I must admit the 'reasons' Daily Mail readers on Mumsnet do make me laugh Xmas Blush

Before the online version became popular and everyone bought the paper copy, the 'reasons' were very different.

"I was visiting the inlaws and they read it"
"I picked up a copy in the hairdressers as that's all they had to read"
"I found it on the train and it was such a long journey"

"I tripped over in the high street, landed head first into a copy of the Daily Mail and had to wait an hour for the ambulance, so what was I supposed to do?"

Ok, maybe not the last one but it wouldn't have looked out of place amongst some of the other excuses Xmas Grin
