To ditch the Daily Mail

Realised that reading all the crap in DM was just depressing me. Finally ditched it. Will use Sky news for factual updates. Feel so much better already. A few years ago I ditched East Enders - similarly depressing.

There isn’t any impartial news though. You should always read/watch news with an awareness of the political and cultural bias of the producer. It’s probably better to read a range of sources as well if you can.

the80sweregreat · 21/12/2021 09:36

Many other papers ( not the mail or the guardian) are behind pay walls, so the mail and the guardian is where I go to for my news online , I don't buy them in print and if went behind a pay wall I wouldn't bother with it.
I have to sign up for the Guardian , but that's all.
I read both online, but it is a bit like watching rolling 24 hour news , you will get so many different views.
The DM is another world though and they allow a lot of trolls on the comments pages as it isn't regulated.
It does give a snap shot of how people really think too, which can be scary :(
Both papers are flawed , but the Guardian crowd are more amusing with their comments and not always one sided either

ThePostWhatIWrote · 21/12/2021 09:36

Late and incomplete? No thanks.

ThePostWhatIWrote · 21/12/2021 09:39

I agree if you have the time go through many sources.
Also if you have sound real world knowledge go through and judge the journalism.
You may be sorely disappointed with long-term trusted providers.

NashvilleQueen · 21/12/2021 09:39

It's a terrible newspaper in every respect and yet weirdly one of the few to get the whole GC thing. Maybe that's more because they like their women looking traditionally fuckable than they are feminists but at least they do call out the bullshit.

I find it impossible to read any of them at the moment. No to the Murdoch press. No to the Torygraph and DM. The Guardian is anti-women. Only Private Eye is worth the money.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 21/12/2021 09:39

Oh my days - you have only just realised this!?

It's akin to announcing that you've decided to wear shoes outside from now on or that Tuesday is a valid day of the week after all.

Welcome to the rest of your life, op and I hope you never look back!

NashvilleQueen · 21/12/2021 09:40

Pippa Crear is doing good things at the Daily Mirror and traditionally they're a left wing paper. But I wouldn't buy it because it's generally dumbed down shite.

PigeonLittle · 21/12/2021 09:42

I used to read it when the baby was little and lots of little articles helped pass the night feeds.

I realised how much stress, hatred, misogony and click bait I was inviting into my life and resolved never to read it, which I've stuck to.

Very rarely I will read an article linked to on here and I find it such an unusable website, designed to drag me away from the article I was reading, it often skips on my behalf, wont let me click back, has a weird banner that stops me accessing my url. Nastly little site filled with nasty information.

Come join the bright side of those of us who never read it! Star

BarbaraofSeville · 21/12/2021 09:42

Someone posted a great link a few months ago that rated popular news sources for accuracy and left/right bias. The DM was low on accuracy and very right wing.

Which is obvious when you read it. Most of their reports on 'news' as opposed to celeb shite and shaming of women for existing include the words 'may', 'are thought to' or 'could' so often that they are meaningless. I could say that the sky may turn green tomorrow and prosecco could rain from the sky, and it's not an inaccurate statement until Thursday, by which time we'll have moved on to worrying about something else.

WorraLiberty · 21/12/2021 09:43

@wonderstuff

Daily Mail has the most visited new website in the world, how depressing is that? I very rarely go to DM, they do get good pictures so sometimes I crumble, but generally I’d rather not support them, so much is so negative and unkind.
It's always been the most popular/linked to news website on Mumsnet.

Despite so many MNetters protests, so many people here read and therefore fund it.

When 'Penis Beaker' was published in the Daily Mail, lots of MNetters were blaming that for MN being 'full of Daily Mail readers'.

Errrm, twas ever thus as they say Xmas Confused

TerraNovaTwo · 21/12/2021 09:43

Following.

The whole world laughs at the UK because of the DM. Whatever happened to 'keep calm and carry on'? Wrt the pandemic, it makes Brits look like a bunch of panic ridden wusses.

cansu · 21/12/2021 09:43

Mouseonmychair
The Telegraph is quite clearly a campaigning newspaper on behalf of the government. The govment use it to leak stories they want in the press on a regular basis. The idea that it is unbiased is simply laughable. I can't comment on the Times as I haven't read it.

applesapplesapples · 21/12/2021 09:44

DM is a far-right propaganda outlet, with added celeb bullshit to make the fascism easier to swallow.

Pazuzu · 21/12/2021 09:44

I love reading the Guardian London rich pontificating about what the poor people want...

The Mail stirs far too much. Position a one week, position b the next.

The only paper that I genuinely miss is the Today. They hated all politicians equally, great paper.

ThePostWhatIWrote · 21/12/2021 09:46

Tbh I laugh now at "the whole world laughs at the UK" comments.
Ime people elsewhere don't give a damn. Maybe get better friends?

Magspy · 21/12/2021 09:50

If the consensus is that you are unreasonable to stop reading it, will you continue to read it?

No UK-based news source is impartial or balanced; they are all campaigning tools. All you can do is look out for topics and stories that interest or impact you and use critical thinking and access to primary sources to fact check and bias check.

Just a theory, but I suspect the reason there's so much public vitriol against the Mail in particular - versus, say the Express, which is similar but more extremist and less accurate - is because the Mail is the only major UK news source whose subscription base is weighted toward women. (And, worse, working class women.)

Tiramesu · 21/12/2021 09:50

Loads of people read DM online for the purposes of 'havint a look' and to critique it - massively bumping up their profits! It's a really dominant voice

Morag72 · 21/12/2021 09:51

I tend to agree - people across the world do read the DM - and it creates a terrible impression of the U.K.

FinallyHere · 21/12/2021 09:51

@Thebathneedscleaned

Oh the irony of going to the Murdoch press for impartial news.
Sky was acquired by Comcast in 2018

Comcast are seriously no fans of Murdoch.

RaoulDufysCat · 21/12/2021 09:53

@Mouseonmychair

I gave up the daily mail and the guardian. Both are just campaigning newspapers that don't report the news. Now I stick with the times or telegraph.
This is bonkers. The Times and Telegraph have every bit as much of an agenda as the Daily Mail or Guardian.

Personally, I think the best thing is to read a range of opinions from different sources and make your own mind up. Not the Mail though!

LadyWithLapdog · 21/12/2021 09:53

Actually, you'd be surprised how much is reported and let's just say, not in glowing terms. Laughing stock. At least in the three European countries I have relatives in.
ddl1 · 21/12/2021 09:53

Only U thing is not ditching it a long time ago! It's a horrible paper.

FinallyHere · 21/12/2021 09:55

As for the DailyFail, there is a £20 note pinned to the notice board over my desk.

To be awarded to the first person to find an article in the DM which is decent to a woman without judging another by comparison.

It's been there since 1985, it was quite the sum of money for me then. Sigh.

RancidOldHag · 21/12/2021 09:56

I'm surprised anyone ever reads it other than on the days when there is the Money Mail - as that section is good

But it's one of the most linked media on MN, so it has to be popular with many MNers.

the80sweregreat · 21/12/2021 09:56

It is horrible. , but the news online gives me a snapshot of how the wind is blowing regarding Boris Johnson and why they are doing what they are doing :(
I would read the Telegraph if it wasn't behind a pay wall.
