To ditch the Daily Mail

Realised that reading all the crap in DM was just depressing me. Finally ditched it. Will use Sky news for factual updates. Feel so much better already. A few years ago I ditched East Enders - similarly depressing.

Can't believe I'm speaking in defence of the daily Mail....but they always pipe up at
for womens rights gender critical issues when few others were

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 21/12/2021 18:50

I suspect it’s not so much that they support women as that they hate trans people.

AuntyBumBum · 21/12/2021 18:54

OMG what were you doing reading the Mail in the first place? Glad to hear that you've seen the light, it is abysmal!

AuntyBumBum · 21/12/2021 19:02

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool

I suspect it’s not so much that they support women as that they hate trans people.
Exactly this.

If your feminism takes you in that direction then say hello to the Taliban and the black shirts. They'd both be on your side of the battle too.

BasicDad · 21/12/2021 19:14

Moving from DM to Sky News is almost like jumping out of the pan and into the fire 😐

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 21/12/2021 19:16

No, it’s really not.

sjxoxo · 21/12/2021 19:21

I can’t believe you were reading the DM in the first place.. I thought it was only really old people like my grandad! Isn’t every other story about the royal family or migrants?! Plus it’s well known all the comments are bots.. Last place I’d go for ‘news’! X

StoneofDestiny · 21/12/2021 19:34

Scary how many people read the Daily Mail - it's such a biased rag. It really is a shit stirring arse wipe.

LadyWithLapdog · 21/12/2021 20:40

OP, I've managed today without it. It's doable, be strong.

PilesEdgeworth · 21/12/2021 20:52

Yup, but unfortunately that does seem to be where some feminists are now at. Even on here I’ve seen posters favouring Trump over Biden solely because of transgender issues, even accepting that the loss of bodily autonomy re. abortion is a price worth paying.

Can’t get my head around that personally.

Letsbekindplease · 21/12/2021 22:18

I had terrible anxiety early this year /last year and I ditched it for the first 3 months of 2021. It was great. No anxiety. No health anxiety. I did miss the celeb gossip (don’t k ow why because it is utter tripe)
Here I am end of this year and I’m constantly on it looking at articles and reading the comments.
I will be ditching it next year again and hopefully stay off it.

RaoulDufysCat · 22/12/2021 00:23

I can't understand why people are saying the Mail has a good website. It's old-fashioned, messy and cluttered to my eyes.

Rizzoli123 · 22/12/2021 00:35

I haven't read the daily mail since Jan Moir wrote an horrible article on Stephen Gatley just after he had died. The article got around 10k in complaints. She still writes for then but I will not read a single word she has written or a paper that chooses to promote her work.

iheartredsquirrels · 22/12/2021 00:40

@Riapia

Yet it’s the paper most linked to on MN. Strange as nobody on MN would dare admit reading it.
100% agree
Bunnyfuller · 22/12/2021 00:50

I would add, they all have an agenda. If you can look for commonality of facts and avoid the subtext.

But DM is particularly toxic, if for nothing else than it’s princes above a common tabloid.

Bunnyfuller · 22/12/2021 00:50

*pretences

Jesus yes, it was a disgraceful piece of hateful bigotry in a paper which has catered for readers who enjoy that sort of thing for decades. It actually got 22,000 complaints, and is the most complained-about article in the history of the PCC.

Fatarseflanagan09 · 22/12/2021 02:31

I always read Aljazeera on the iPad if I want to know about current affairs, it’s pretty good and covers everything, I stopped reading newspapers because of the conflicting information and general shite.

LadyWithLapdog · 22/12/2021 07:23

That article about Stephen Gatley 😡 OMG. Followed by a mocking piece on Tara P-T and a body shaming one on the Nolan sisters. I didn't read more than that as I felt disgusted. I'm sure one of their journos could write a hateful piece on cancel culture or something about people not reading their hateful rag.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/12/2021 08:27

I suspect it’s not so much that they support women as that they hate trans people

In most articles, there is little to no (mostly no) transphobia and simply an articulation of the erasure of women's rights.

For example;

OhGiveUp · 22/12/2021 09:00

I read the DM every day, sometimes twice a day, just the news and sport.
I'm not interested in the sleb side it, can't stand any of them.
I don't care what anyone thinks of my reading material or me for reading it 🤷

Same

I skim the headlines and will look at very few articles, usually check other websites for other ‘views’ on the subject

Not bothered with celebrities, tv shows or sport

limitedperiodonly · 22/12/2021 17:38

This is the reason I read the Daily Mail.

Masterclass in 2,000 words. If you don't get it I understand. But some of us do.

GirlOfTudor · 22/12/2021 17:43

I purposely don't read any tabloids. I prefer more academic sources for my news consumption.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 22/12/2021 18:31

I prefer lots of sources…

And to be fair I do need to read at least the headlines cos forewarned is forarmed when it comes to my dad 😀
