How much wine is too much

Went out for a Christmas meal last night with 6 friends. One friend is a non drinker. We had 6 bottles of wine between 5 and half bottles between 5 of us. This morning had a phone call from non drinking friend to say we all drank too much and 2 bottles between us should have been enough. We were not merry but nowhere near drunk, not noisy or disruptive. AIBU to think that this telling off is out of order.

How long is a piece of string? This might be too much for me, but YMMV and it all depends if you drink like this all
The time or if it was a occasional thing.

Sirzy · 16/12/2021 14:27

Is she none drinking due to her own issues with drink or just none drinker?

But ultimately unless she was expected to pay towards it or sow mine was become nasty drunk then she can’t tell anyone what to drink

PurpleDaisies · 16/12/2021 14:28

It’s much more than I’d drink but I don’t think it was her place to tell you off.
You didn’t split the bill evenly did uou?

PurpleDaisies · 16/12/2021 14:30

We had 6 bottles of wine between 5 and half bottles between 5 of us

Are you still pissed? Wink

Toplowlight · 16/12/2021 14:30

As long as she wasn’t expected to pay for it and you weren’t so drunk that you couldn’t converse normally with her then it’s really none of her business and she shouldn’t be telling anyone off.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 16/12/2021 14:31

So basically a bottle each. I don't think that's too much drunk with a Christmas meal

PearlclutchersInc · 16/12/2021 14:33

Over a bottle apiece ...depends on the time it was over but there's a fair chance you were being loud and boring to the sober one.

Were you able to get yourselves home OK (another point?)

ShirleyPhallus · 16/12/2021 14:34

@PurpleDaisies

We had 6 bottles of wine between 5 and half bottles between 5 of us

Are you still pissed? Wink

I was confused by that too!

I think your friend was jus trying to tell you you were way more annoying than you thought!

BurntO · 16/12/2021 14:34

Nearly a bottle each? So three glasses PP? Over a meal and catching up with friends I wouldn’t say it’s too much. Your non drinker friend sounds delightful… maybe they should stay home next time

BlingLoving · 16/12/2021 14:36

hahaha. No, I don't consider that too much over a long christmas boozy dinner. But I can see how a non-drinker may not have found it super fun as you were all probably a bit louder, a bit more ridiculous that you would normally be. Having said that, unless you were behaving badly and she was forced to look after you, she is 100% bang out of order to be complaining to you all the next day.

poorbuthappy · 16/12/2021 14:37

Yeah 2 bottles between 5 ain't going far.

People drink / people don't drink.
What shouldn't happen is either group comment on the other.

FourTeaFallOut · 16/12/2021 14:37

Jesus, how rude. I just wouldn't invite her again and I'm a just one glass lightweight.

CiderJolly · 16/12/2021 14:37

Over a bottle of wine each is quite a lot really but it’s not for your friend to judge unless you asked?

SickAndTiredAgain · 16/12/2021 14:37

I don’t think it sounds like too much, but having said that, I know people for whom that would be enough to make them pretty annoying in terms of tipsy-ness. It’s hard to tell when you’re one of the drinkers. If she never normally has any issue with people drinking then I’d be inclined to think maybe she was right in that you were all a bit annoying. But if in general she is disapproving of alcohol then I’d ignore her.

Why wasn’t she drinking? Does she never drink or was this unusual/a one off for a specific reason and maybe she was a bit jealous.

OhLookMoreShit · 16/12/2021 14:37

Fuck me if she thinks that's a problem she should spend a weekend round mine, I'd be shipped off to an asylum 🙈

Hillarious · 16/12/2021 14:38

If your friend saw fit to comment, then it must have been too much.

BestZebbie · 16/12/2021 14:38

Hmm...at university we used to drink a bottle of wine each over dinner to be 'pre drunk' more cheaply before going to a club. We were all fairly loudly drunk by the end of the meal - certainly enough that non-drinkers tended to not bother with attending that meal as a result - and definitely enough to change our social behaviour. Just because we had capacity to still get let into a club and carry on drinking without throwing up didn't mean that we were only 'merry' at that point.
I think I'd expect to have between one large glass and half a bottle with a meal as an adult who probably wasn't then going clubbing.

Samedaysame · 16/12/2021 14:39

DH paid the bill for everyone it was nearly £250. Plus the tip. It was his suggestion to go to that particular restaurant and he would pay. Friend does not drink and never has. I am always the designated driver so it was really nice to have a few glasses with a lovely meal. The other 4 friends always have a few drinks whenever we go out but it is the first time in a long time that I have had a drink because I always drive. Purple, DH and one friend a bit delicate. I am fine only had a 3 glasses.

AryaStarkWolf · 16/12/2021 14:39

I'd drink that at a meal too, your friend sounds very judgy

PurpleDaisies · 16/12/2021 14:39

Does she never drink or was this unusual/a one off for a specific reason and maybe she was a bit jealous.

Why is everyone always jealous on here?

furbabymama87 · 16/12/2021 14:40

A bottle is 3 large glasses, so one glass each. Your friend is insane!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 16/12/2021 14:42

Don't include her next time ... fun sponge

redandwhite1 · 16/12/2021 14:43

Well she's a bore, I don't think nearly a bottle each is 'too much' at all!!!

Fromablokespoint · 16/12/2021 14:43

So roughly about 10 - 12 units of alcohol ( @ 12%).

I was out on Friday night and had 12 units!!!!!

4 pints a roughly 5% alcohol - was that too much on a night out!

A bottle and a bit of wine sounds far more than 4 pints but is actually the same. Not excessive for a night out with friends.

Shoxfordian · 16/12/2021 14:44

She sounds great Hmm
Don’t invite her next time
