Weird GP appointment

Husband in consulting room and gP says ‘we will do that cervical smear test now, just pop behind the curtain????

Very uncomfortable

I don't understand. Was the GP offering your DH a smear which would be weird or were you both there and you were getting a smear which is not weird?

WeatherwaxOn · 02/12/2021 12:42

What was your appointment for?
Why was your husband in the consulting room with you?

0palescent · 02/12/2021 12:44

More info needed please.

Skippy21 · 02/12/2021 12:44

New patient appointment and husband had an appointment too but later on. GP says come on in at the same time

OP posts:
arethereanyleftatall · 02/12/2021 12:44

What do you think is weird about it?

arethereanyleftatall · 02/12/2021 12:44

Your own husband?!?

Or someone else's?

ApolloandDaphne · 02/12/2021 12:45

Or was it going behind a curtain when it was just your DH there? That's not odd at if it is. Not everyone want their DH to see the GP rooting about up your vagina. And it also respects your privacy should someone come into the room. I'm sure my GP pulls the curtain each time I have a smear.

Skippy21 · 02/12/2021 12:45

Completely just getting info on system ie vaccination status. Not expecting anything else.

OP posts:
0palescent · 02/12/2021 12:45

Jesus christ. What did you find weird? That your husband was there? That you needed a smear?

ApolloandDaphne · 02/12/2021 12:46

So you weren't expecting a smear at all? Did they mention you were overdue for one?

comedycentral · 02/12/2021 12:46

Is it your husband? This is a confusing post, sorry you feel uncomfortable. It's a routine procedure and very proactive of the GP to start things off with a smear.

Skippy21 · 02/12/2021 12:46

Just put on the spot not offered female doctor etc

OP posts:
rjacksmiss · 02/12/2021 12:47

Why you moaning?

anon12345anon · 02/12/2021 12:48

Yeah that is weird. If you were only there for a new patient appointment Confused

I have absolutely no problem having my smear test done, but 1) I'd like a little notice to prepare and 2) surely your husband wasn't going to sit in the Dr's room whilst it was done ? Confused

Skippy21 · 02/12/2021 12:48

I had thought these appointments would be sorted just not 5 mins after walking in the room and just felt weird

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 02/12/2021 12:48

Oh I’ve had that. It was a bit strange having dh in the room while another man’s looking at your cervix.

Although we do know a couple for who that would be just a normal Saturday night.

LaMarschallin · 02/12/2021 12:48

Presumably he felt your husband would act as a chaperone instead of calling a nurse in.
Or did you feel that, by inviting you to pop behind the curtain, he was excluding your husband?

ApolloandDaphne · 02/12/2021 12:48

At least you don't need to book and go back. If you wanted a female doctor you could have just said that you would rather rebook.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 02/12/2021 12:48

I see nothing wrong with it. I only have a male gp so not being offered female is fine. You should be offered a chaperone, but surely if your husband was there he fits the bill?

Skippy21 · 02/12/2021 12:49

Exactly, Thankyou for understanding

OP posts:
luinagreine · 02/12/2021 12:49

My gp likes to pounce on you(not literally but you know what I mean) for a smear because it doesn't give you time to put it off. Lots of women put it on the long finger so just doing it makes sure that it gets done.

knobblykneesandturnedouttoes · 02/12/2021 12:50

I would've immediately gone into panic mode probably run out the door. Should be handled with privacy and sensitivity, husband or no husband. Many women need time to build up to a smear and it isn't just a routine procedure to them.

JaninesEyePatch · 02/12/2021 12:51

Never had a smear done by a doctor, always a practice nurse.
I wouldn't be bothered if DH was there but would be bothered by being put on the spot.
I would have just said no thank you I'll make an appointment to come in another time.
