To wonder why we’re still obsessed with Covid.

Three times as many people are dying of cancer every single day. More than ten times as many people are dying every day of other causes. But we aren’t getting daily updates about these on every news bulletin or website. Yes, people should get vaccinated, yes occasionally people are still getting very ill with it, and some are dying. But it is very far from being the great danger that it was 12-18 months ago. Can we just move on from the endless focus on it now?

It seems people forget that death is a thing, and we die from lots of other non-Covid things too.

Because it still gets page clicks, which in turn sells ad revenue.

Because it’s closing schools and classes left right and centre. Which means people need child care and can’t work. And schools can’t run with no staff, who have Covid and can’t work. 2 teachers have been off for 8 weeks at least with Covid being the start of the long haul to getting better.

Vaccines are just about keeping us out of the shit but it's taken millions of boosters for any waning immunity in the vulnerable.

It’s because it causes an acute illness that needs rapid medical treatment and is infecting pretty much everyone as it’s a novel virus. This threatens western countries health care system so if all hospitals are full of covid patients your child will not get seen when they break a leg or contract an illness that requires a hospital stay.

I am sure we have all had enough. My teen DC are off constantly despite being vaccinated, now they have to start wearing masks again whilst the rest of us can swan about anywhere you like without a mask. Certain parts of society (kids) are still massively impacted despite them being the very ones giving up on education to protect the people who can now socialise without masks. So yeah I am done but as a frontline nurse I can't ignore it.

None of us can remember a time before cancer, before flu, etc
But two years ago covid 19 did not exist. Then it spread across the world really quickly and a lot of people died. It's extra death from something that did not exist a couple of years back. That's why (I assume) so many are focusing on it.

You can’t treat cancer patients if hospitals fill up with covid patients.
People undergoing chemotherapy are at great risk of dying if they contract covid.

Pretending covid has gone away does not benefit cancer patients.

Because we are still in a pandemic and it is contagious. Cancer isn't contagious, nor are most of the other things people get treated for in hospital.

If we had a "Death Scoreboard" for other health problems and not Covid, we would soon change focus.

I think we have all the treatments we can hope for now, so just have to get on with it.

I agree children and young people are the ones that have given up the most in this pandemic, we need to give them a break.

COVID is actually a pretty serious for many cancer patients.

What does that mean in practice?

Hopefully the vaccine will role out to younger children soon and then they can relax more. Most cases are currently in 5-9 year olds

@tttigress so what does that look like, this "getting on with it"? Are you proposing we stop treating COVID patients that need hospitalisation? And if we are treating them, then we are still need to control the amount of COVID in the population or all the ICU beds will be full.

Yanbu. The simple fact is that most of the folk who have died with covid(and I use with deliberately) have been elderly. For the vast majority its a minor illness.
The narrative that all nhs beds are being taken up by non vaccinated is nonsense. Time to live with it.

My partner and I went to N Ireland recently, where they're much more strict on Covid measures and we were pleased about this. Then went to Manchester where anything goes (though we wore FFP2 masks and distanced ourselves as far as possible) and 3 days after I got back came down with quite a nasty cold. It brought home to me how easy it is for any virus to be caught and we know that Covid and its more recent variants is very infectious.
