To wonder why we’re still obsessed with Covid.

Three times as many people are dying of cancer every single day. More than ten times as many people are dying every day of other causes. But we aren’t getting daily updates about these on every news bulletin or website. Yes, people should get vaccinated, yes occasionally people are still getting very ill with it, and some are dying. But it is very far from being the great danger that it was 12-18 months ago. Can we just move on from the endless focus on it now?

Because they are excess deaths, if Covid hadn't arrived then the people dying with it would probably still be alive. It's also a huge danger to an awful lot of people.

@bridgetreilly

Is that a serious question?
Because if kills people and is running out of control in the whole of Europe.

This will cause even more deaths

It’s easy- have a vaccine and where a mask, wash hands and kills close contacts.

Why is that so hard?

If we had a "Death Scoreboard" for other health problems and not Covid, we would soon change focus.

I think we have all the treatments we can hope for now, so just have to get on with it.

Such things do exist on the Google:

Because the pandemic hasn't ended ,
We are getting on with it in that everything has been open for months now and cases though high are relatively stable for now , although it does fluctuate,
We can't ignore the fact we are going into winter. COVID hasn't gone away.

@PurpleDaisies

You can’t treat cancer patients if hospitals fill up with covid patients.
People undergoing chemotherapy are at great risk of dying if they contract covid.

Pretending covid has gone away does not benefit cancer patients.

As has been pointed out to you many times!!

You posting on threads & starting threads about Covid is hardly helping us it?

It's killing hundreds every day who wouldn't ordinarily have died and it's entirely preventable with good infection control methods.

Because only those privileged with good health have been able to move on from Covid. Complaining just makes you look callous.

I think so many people had had enough now.
Stop treating voluntarily unvaccinated people in hospital, and give the people who have no choice in their health condition a chance.

Invariably the people who have “had enough” of covid and propose we do away with all restrictions are the same people who’ve had naff all to do with covid. I can assure you that all of us in healthcare who have actually had to deal with the effects of the pandemic are equally as fed up, but doing away with all restrictions is not the answer. Some of us don’t have the luxury of pretending covid doesn’t exist.

Covid is a problem because it’s inconvenient. Previously you only had to stay home if you were too sick to function. Now you have to stay home even if you feel perfectly fine - in some cases you have to stay home even if you don’t have Covid, because some places won’t let you in if you’ve been in contact with a Covid case. Parents are having to stay home with healthy kids because school policy is that they can’t attend if someone in the house has Covid. Healthy people are having to cancel medical and dental appointments because a family member has Covid. And healthy people are having to faff about testing themselves which they wouldn’t do for any other illness. That’s why we’re still obsessed with Covid, because it restricts our lives and it’s a massive pain.

Because it’s a global pandemic with likely another two years to run and there is the possibility of variants (look at the one in Botswana that’s just appeared) which may be vaccine resistant?

Stop treating voluntarily unvaccinated people in hospital?

Oh what a thrillingly controversial point of view! You are like a poundshop Katie Hopkins!

Do you want them to die in the street? Do you think that will enrich the life of the nation somehow? If you think at all of course.

No we don't. There are still hundreds of thousands of people in the UK who have had the vaccine but not developed any antibodies to Covid. Mainly people with cancer and transplant patients.
Scientists are working hard to develop a vaccine to help them.

I kind of agree with you.hardly anybody talks about the total collapse of the NHS( you actually feel like winning the Lottery if you get a GP appointment). However,I think maybe the reason it is still so much in the News, scientist and other virus knowledgable people know, there is always a potential for virus mutation, that could kill the lot of us.it is a bit like a sword hanging over us.It is the underlaying fear of humans extinction.

Because, apparently, it's only covid deaths that matter. Who knew there could be a death hierarchy? Oh and before anybody jumps on me I did get told by somebody (when I mentioned my dad was dying of cancer last year), "well at least it's not covid like your mum died of, that would be awful to lose both of your parents through that". Hmm

My news feed has been remarkably light on covid lately. Am genuinely puzzled by OP.

Peppa Pig, death of Amess, butcher shortage, HGV driver shortage, Owain Patteson saga... Random tragedies in other countries (Bulgarian bus pile up), UK-USA-Aussies upsetting France, wine shortage for Christmas. HerMaj's back woes, Rittenhouse acquittal, cap on Life time care costs limits (or not).

There's A LOT of other news in last 6 weeks.

The new strains emerging scare me , but I try not to think about it too much.
I've got covid 19 at the moment and it is awful , I've had both jabs and pleased I did as I may have been a lot worse without them or even in hospital , who knows?
I think that the news will be more about covid in the next few weeks as the weather changes and winter truly sets in . I just hope that the hospitals don't become overwhelmed again.
There is something on the bbc news just now about the hospitals and covid.
I wished I had the answers to this , but it clearly hasn't gone away.

People die. Its inevitable. If you are in a care home then chances are you were there nearing end of life. I dont think its callous to say we have to look at the benfits of keeping an elderly person alive a few more months compared to the long term devastating effects on young peoples education and mental health.
New mutant strains appearing. How many vaccines are going to be needed? Its quite clear we have over estimated the efficacy of it by this point.
Pandemics are mother natures own population control.

They already are. Not directly with covid patients, but all the indirect consequences of the pandemic. Plus, the staff are exhausted, staff vacancies are higher than they've ever been, hospitals cannot operate safely with insufficient staffing.
