To wonder what Adele meant when she said she "had to show up for herself every day?"

Baffled. What does this mean?

I don't know anything about Adele but it sounds like something someone with a chronic health condition might say.

RosaRosaRosaRosa · 21/11/2021 15:04

I don't know the context but I'd assume she meant something like she had to do the best for herself every day look after herself and put herself first.

Eg if you were in hospital with a broken leg and a friend showed up for you every day, brought you stuff, made sureb you were comfortable, comforted you etc.

ThinWomansBrain · 21/11/2021 15:04

not have endless duvet days becuse she was depressed?

Iwouldlikesomecake · 21/11/2021 15:04

It means she had to be her own support, ‘to show up in support of’. Nobody else was going to carry her, she had to ‘show up’ and be present for herself every day- not rely on others to look after her (or not solely rely on others).

thisplaceisweird · 21/11/2021 15:08

It means getting up, putting a brave face on, forcing yourself to find the energy to deal with the shit you have to do, no matter how hard.

Fritilleries · 21/11/2021 15:12

I find her enormously irritating. She divorced and ended her family life as she didn't feel she could be "her." What exactly did she think would happen when she became a mother? Something about creating an album based ok divorce and involving your child in it stinks of hubris.

Nobody asked. She'll make millions and millions from it, good for her.
Smokeahontas · 21/11/2021 15:23

Get out of bed, have a shower, get your shit together.

CapitanSandy · 21/11/2021 15:37

I’d take it to mean looking after herself and getting on with things

Yeah, I second this

Agreed. All this “I was still a child” in her new song, you were mid 20s love, time to grow up.
Queenoftheashes · 21/11/2021 15:45

@Fritilleries yeah I agree with that. Something a bit off about it all and how she’s sort of using her divorce to promote her album. Like Taylor swift having to have break ups to inspire song writing but with a kid involved.

LizziesTwin · 21/11/2021 15:49

You show up for yourself when you do something for which you are not accountable to anyone else. Yoga with Adriene uses it a lot. Doing something you don’t want to do & won’t receive any external validation for.

UltimateBugKilla · 21/11/2021 15:52

Lots of artists use their own experiences to make their art!

Thats nothing new, so to try and 'trash' her for that is ridiculous!

Had to show up for herself, like so many people, be her own biggest fan, supporting her choices, being there for herself, when she had nobody else to do that for her.

1forAll74 · 21/11/2021 15:58

She seems to have got into this usual showbizzy style of things now.where you give interviews about your private life. and talk about things that nobody really cares about, because lots of people have the same problems too. I always thought she was more down to earth before, and more private.

She took a multi year break to care for her child, hardly an absent mother.
MsFogi · 21/11/2021 16:03

Generally, I find that self-absorbed people (like Adele) are spout meaningless platitudes and are exceedingly dull.

Fritilleries · 21/11/2021 16:05

Didn't say she was absent. Just irritating. Her life changed when she became a mother and she didn't feel like herself so she divorced. I suppose I'm confused by what she was expecting when she got married and had a child.

Theluggage15 · 21/11/2021 16:14

She just seem to babble therapy/Californian speak now. Seems to involve a lot of navel gazing.

I like the album but not keen on her using her son in it.

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 21/11/2021 16:21

I listened to the new album yesterday, I thought it was awful!

Lottapianos · 21/11/2021 16:26

'I suppose I'm confused by what she was expecting when she got married and had a child.'

I agree. I guess she was expecting the fairytale, like some women do. Husband, baby, life is complete and I will be fulfilled for ever more 🙄

I've only heard one of the songs off the album and I'm bored of it already!

WholeClassKeptIn · 21/11/2021 16:29

Only posting as Ive seen "show up for" a few times recently and it doesnt make sense to me!

WholeClassKeptIn · 21/11/2021 16:29

And I dont understand show up for yourself. You're literally there everyday....

Yirk · 21/11/2021 16:30

Finding the new Adele very americanised, Hollywood preened and presented.
