To wonder what Adele meant when she said she "had to show up for herself every day?"

Baffled. What does this mean?

OP posts:
MaryStuart · 21/11/2021 19:14

According to this, she got married in 2018, so 3 years ago. She’s now 33, so she was 30.
So not mid-20s and most definitely not a child.

To wonder what Adele meant when she said she "had to show up for herself every day?"
DrSbaitso · 21/11/2021 19:14

Plenty of women don't feel themselves once they've had a child.

That's all the more reason to write a song about it, if it's a common human experience that will resonate with many women.

Of course, it helps if it's a good song. But there's nothing new under the sun.

me4real · 21/11/2021 19:16

Had to be there for herself, have her own back.

me4real · 21/11/2021 19:18

It's so definitely a bit of an Americanism. I've seen a fair few commentators say they're sick of the songs about breakups etc as they consider her latest album yet another whiny one like that.

RussianSpy101 · 21/11/2021 19:18

@Fritilleries I’m married with 3 DC and I still feel like myself and I’m very happy.
Do you not??
I think anyone who doesn’t feel themselves in their marriage should take a good long look at their relationship to be honest.

DrSbaitso · 21/11/2021 19:25

Didn't Maroon 5 do an entire album about the front man's latest breakup? Wasn't Bon Jovi known for angsty breakup songs? Aren't love, sex and romance a staple for pop songs, and other genres? Has Lewis Capaldi done a song yet that isn't a woebegone homage to his ex?

SpidersAreShitheads · 21/11/2021 19:25

@DrSbaitso 😅😅 I see your meme and I raise you one.

I like Adele. I think she's a decent person with a kind heart, and I like most of her music. However, I also find this latest LA-version of her a little bit navel-gazing and self-absorbed.

Happy is subjective. It just seems sad that marriage is tossed aside if "you" aren't happy. I guess people leading ordinary and humdrum lives can't aspire to the lives privileged enough to exist selfishly.

So you think people should stay in unhappy marriages?

That's very good. I see you and I raise you this clip, which I feel bad for laughing at but I do anyway. (I am sorry about the reference to Amy Winehouse. She was still alive when this was made.)

I'm not a huge Adele fan. Great singer, for sure, and I do like Send My Love To Your New Lover. I just find a lot of her stuff a bit samey and backgroundy. I'd quite like to hear her do some jazz standards.

thebellagio · 21/11/2021 19:33

I’ve always been a fan of hers but her new album is utter self indulgent Shite.

I listened to 6-7 songs while walking the dog. They all sound the same. I’ve always been impressed by the way she’s kept her son private, but including his voice saying “mummy do you still love me” seemed exploitative. I think she may struggle to maintain his privacy having done that.

lololololollll · 21/11/2021 19:50

I think she's great. We don't all have to like her, I appreciate we all have different tastes but I just find her so warm

Errrm yeah I’d leave any relationship or marriage I was unhappy in, I do live putting myself first, I’m not sure why that’s such a problem for you? Obviously Adele’s fortune probably made her divorce much simpler but nobody should martyr themselves if they’re unhappy in life. Similarly, why should women just accept they won’t feel like themselves again after having a child? What’s wrong with pursuing/reclaiming their identity? Women don’t have to sacrifice themselves just to be wives or mothers
RussianSpy101 · 21/11/2021 19:53

@Fritilleries so women should stay in an unhappy marriage so as long everyone else is happy?
What a forward step for feminism that is.

lololololollll · 21/11/2021 19:53

Gosh I'm shocked at the venom coming from some. Like I said, we all have different tastes. There's many amazing singers that are not my taste but I wouldn't be so vile about them. So sad really

MrsDThomas · 21/11/2021 19:55

Twitter is in overdrive about her. Im not a fan. Never have been. I find her singing the same. If you weren’t depressed before listening, you will be by 9pm.

DrSbaitso · 21/11/2021 20:00

It probably didn't help that there was so, so much hype before her new single and album dropped. Nothing could have lived up to that.

myheartskippedabeat · 21/11/2021 20:01

She is vile, entitled and self absorbed I certainly wouldn't buy her album

MrsDThomas · 21/11/2021 20:03

I saw a comment the other day from someone (unsure who and where), that she was a “musical Meghan Markle”.😂

RussianSpy101 · 21/11/2021 20:04

@lololololollll a lot of it is jealousy. A lot of women can’t stand to see beautiful, successful women doing well.

Of course, when this gets called out they claim to be successful and beautiful themselves and claim they’re not bitter but in most cases, they are.

Hit the nail on the head!!!

Michelle Obama wrote this in her book and I agree with it.

'Marriage is a full on merger, a reconfiguring of two life’s into one, with the well being of the family taking precedence over any one agenda or goal.'

I personally think it's quite selfish to end a marriage when you have a child because you don't feel like 'you'. She was only married a couple of years, she barely even gave it a shot.

Fritilleries · 21/11/2021 20:14

You put it better than I could have done. A marriage is a merging of two lives. Yes, separate identities is important however it is meant to be a joint undertaking.

Strokethefurrywall · 21/11/2021 20:14

Why is she vile @myheartskippedabeat? Or entitled?

I’m thankfully not exposed to the over playing of Adele, which I think can lead to people getting sick and tired of hearing her music all the time, but I’d be interested to know why she’s vile and entitled?

Go on, tell us what you really think.

Seems a very strong response to a singer-songwriter, though. Vile? Entitled? How so?
