Cleaner stole clothes?

TractorAndHeadphones · 07/11/2021 16:49

Got a new jacket that I left hanging on a chair (as far as I recall). New cleaner came, cleaned and tidied. Now I can’t find my jacket.

I’m reluctant to jump to conclusions but this is an item of clothing so not easily mislaid (like a piece of jewellery). I haven’t worn this jacket out yet. DP and I have both turned the house upside down but can’t find it. It’s a branded sports jacket (think Puma, Nike etc) so not particularly designer/valuable. I’ve considered texting the cleaner to ask if she’s seen it as well but I’d sound really stupid not knowing where stuff is in my own house!

AIBU to wonder whether she had something to do with it? Although it sounds like a strange thing to steak I see no other option. Nobody else has been in my house since.

Have you checked your car?

SpookyPumpkinPants · 07/11/2021 22:12

Can't people at least read the OP's posts before making inane suggestions?

StoneofDestiny · 07/11/2021 23:00

It's more likely your recall of the jacket on the chair is from a previous day and the jacket is still where you left it - work, coffee shop, friends house etc

no3whatsitgoingtobe · 07/11/2021 23:17

@Sparklfairy have you just made that up lol? I've just tried to search for the proof and there's nothing. You can film people In your home just not in their bedroom unless your a parent etc.
And you don't have to tell
Then!

And in all honesty the police wouldn't do a thing! A man was caught filming a 2 year old baby In aldi in my local area and the police said nothing could even be done about that even though the mum didn't give permission

PeapodBurgundy · 08/11/2021 06:44

Could it have ended up at DH's work/gym etc? Just thinking if you say he sometimes puts is jacket hung up about the place, could he have put his over yours, picked up the both, then not recognised it as yours out of context with it being new so left it behind?

Sparklfairy · 08/11/2021 10:43

@no3whatsitgoingtobe no i haven't "made it up" Hmm If you're paying someone to work in your home you're obviously allowed cameras, but legally you have to tell them so they can decide whether or not to take the job. As I said, it comes under "employee surveillance" and employees must be made aware they are being watched by cameras.

I know this because I realised I was being filmed by a particular creepy cleaning client. I didn't just Google either - I had a very good solicitor for something else at the time and asked her to find out for me, which she did.

longtompot · 08/11/2021 11:19

@2catsandhappy

It is behind the ironing boardGrin
Beat me to it! I was going to say it's with the ironing board that disappeared in the flat one day.

Or it's been put in a box of other things and is up in the attic (the post where the ops laptop went missing, only to find out her dh put it in with a box of papers and put it into their attic)

Is there an area you keep going back to to look for it @TractorAndHeadphones? I find that it's usually in that area, just not quite where you think.

Mummabear89 · 08/11/2021 17:30

Just ask if she tidied it away?

Lamaitresse · 08/11/2021 17:35

Haven’t rtft but this has happened to us a few times, things completely disappearing. Messaged my cleaning lady each time & she always knows exactly where everything is 😂

Londoncallingme · 08/11/2021 17:47

Backseat if car? Boot?

Pbbananabagel · 08/11/2021 18:04
@Indoctro - oh give over. I can believe once getting a dodgy person to clean, but not multiple people. Most people are honest.
Most people are honest - 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

astoundedgoat · 08/11/2021 18:18

I bet it got caught up in the washing and is in your dryer now.

OR when you say it was in the dining room, is it a pockety jacket? It could be an opportunist thief - looked in the window, reckoned there was a good shot of their being an iphone or wallet in the pocket, and nicked it. Anything else missing?

Tessabelle74 · 08/11/2021 18:21

I'm a cleaner and my home owners regularly text me to see if I've seen something.
A) I don't mind
B) I've NEVER stolen a missing item
Check in your car in case you have worn it and forgotten but ask the cleaner but please don't assume she took it if she's given you no other cause for concern

YourWetSock · 08/11/2021 18:26

@RunningFromInsanity

In no other profession or workplace would a missing jacket automatically be assumed stolen by an employee. Only cleaners are automatically assumed to be thieves.
Only the cleaner has been in the home
Gonegrey31 · 08/11/2021 18:26

I lost a jacket once by putting it round my shoulders when carrying toddler to local shop. It must have slipped off . I didn’t notice until I returned home and later thought where is my jacket ? Is it possible this happened to you ?

Gagagardener · 08/11/2021 18:26

OP - any news?

iolaus · 08/11/2021 18:27

I remember being really annoyed thinking my teenage daughter must have borrowed the jacket I wear for work

Checked everywhere it could normally be, including car etc - turned out found it 2 weeks later in my bosses office, must have taken it off in there

Leftbutcameback · 08/11/2021 18:34

I lost a jacket once - beige cord (nicer than it sounds!). It was on the house, disappeared, never saw it again. No-one came into the house. The strangest thing ever. It was nearly 20 years ago and it still drives me mad!

Mammma91 · 08/11/2021 18:39

OP, did you find the jacket? Im so invested in this mysterious jacket thief! If it helps any - my 2 year old frequently empties the hallway of coats and shoes and throws them in the washing machine! He bloody LOVES the washing machine 😂

GreenLunchBox · 08/11/2021 19:07

DS had a gorgeous, unique jacket stolen from nursery and its been 16 years and I'm still salty about it Angry

In your case I really don't think it can be your cleaner. You need to look harder.

Trudij123 · 08/11/2021 19:10

I lost my running capris once - searched for two weeks to find them curled up in the dog’s bed. 🙄🙄

Thepennysjustdropped · 08/11/2021 19:11

Hanging on back of door?

Nearly47 · 08/11/2021 19:23

My dh once took my almost new boots to the charity shop by mistake. Also I've lost my favorite trousers. It had been put in my sons drawer with his uniform of same colour and similar size. It was "missing" for months. That's one of the reasons I don't give a cleaner. Not that I think they would steal. But that I would suspect them for being the outsiders in my house. My sisters have cleaners and even though they never act on their suspicions they are always thinking the cleaner has taken something until it eventually turns up. Awlful.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/11/2021 19:37

could your dc have borrowed it?
