Cleaner stole clothes?

TractorAndHeadphones · 07/11/2021 16:49

Got a new jacket that I left hanging on a chair (as far as I recall). New cleaner came, cleaned and tidied. Now I can’t find my jacket.

I’m reluctant to jump to conclusions but this is an item of clothing so not easily mislaid (like a piece of jewellery). I haven’t worn this jacket out yet. DP and I have both turned the house upside down but can’t find it. It’s a branded sports jacket (think Puma, Nike etc) so not particularly designer/valuable. I’ve considered texting the cleaner to ask if she’s seen it as well but I’d sound really stupid not knowing where stuff is in my own house!

AIBU to wonder whether she had something to do with it? Although it sounds like a strange thing to steak I see no other option. Nobody else has been in my house since.

What does the jacket look like when it is inside out?

TractorAndHeadphones · 07/11/2021 19:05

@HalfpastFlea

I couldn't find a brand new still with tags on cardigan I bought recently. I found it down the back of the sofa, I'd mislaid it, convinced myself where I'd left it. I was wrong but at no point did I assume the cleaner had pinched my new Boden cardi...
Neither did I - this only entered my mind after I couldn't find it after a very thorough search.

Unlike those people who can't find something after looking for it for 5 mins, and then immediately think that their cleaner has stolen it! Shame on them!

Oh, what a smart question!
FrogFairy · 07/11/2021 19:07

Have you been through your bins and recycling?

I once lost my purse after shopping. Assumed stolen so cancelled all my cards. It turned up a few days later - in my freezer.

oknowimscared · 07/11/2021 19:14

Haven’t RTFT, but I’d assume I’d done something daft, like put it in a charity bag.

TractorAndHeadphones · 07/11/2021 19:16

@NewlyGranny yes just us, no DC in the house.
Thanks for sticking up for me. Quite a few posters seem insistent on branding me a twat (or a Monica whatever that is sarcasm Halloween Grin ). Based on the title of the OP alone.
Ignoring the fact that we have just moved in so no junk, spent hours of my 'relaxing weekend' searching and that this thread is about the possibility of the cleaner taking it AFTER all of this effort. I'm not sure how considering the possibility is still considered an assumption but this is MN after all.

The cleaner is new, I found her on FB but she has a business page and I don't have her personal SM. Know nothing much about her family.

I have had about 6 cleaners in last 25 years, out of them 3 were stealing from me, I even caught one of them in the actShock. The other 3 were very trustworthy. You just never know!

We (well DH) lost a new lovely fluffy dusky pink throw two weeks ago. 200cm x 240, so freaking massive when folded or rolled.

We already had a few of the same type in differing colours.

I know I washed it, he informed me.

Two hours of searching everywhere we store anything made of fabric.

I was accusing him of leaving it on the bus, at work, forgetting to actually buy it (a trawl through statement shows he did) and of being an utter moron for losing something that big and obvious.

In the end?

Turns out he'd purchased a fucking silver grey one instead and told me he got the pink one. It was sitting snuggled up to the other silver grey one we all ready owned doing an excellent impression of one humongous blanket.

Moral, weird stuff happens and your memory can malfunction spectacularly. That and my DH could lose the flipping Taj Mahal, even if it had been painted fluorescent green, given the opportunity.

He lost the circular saw once, still in it's massive shiny multi coloured box with all the attachments. Took four hours to find that on the same set of shelves it usually lives on but in a slightly different spot.

2catsandhappy · 07/11/2021 19:17

It is behind the ironing boardGrin

KittenCatcher · 07/11/2021 19:17

Have you been putting things Into storage or thrown stuff out. Could your DP have put it out by mistake

Brilliant question - dark grey lining. The material and relfection of light would give away that it's my jacket not another piece of clothing

Oh God that's hilarious Grin I'm a bit like your DH which is why my main theory was that I'd done something silly. However my DP can find a needle in a haystack.

We lost a set of small screws once (for a decorative item I'd gotten from abroad so no chance of a replacement). He took the sofa apart and it had dropped into one of the crevices

Just found a beautiful old shawl of mine down behind the sofa cushions... keep looking, OP!

ittakes2 · 07/11/2021 19:29

Honestly - its likely she just hung it a place you would not have thought of so of course text her and ask. My cleaner puts some things in some places logical to her but weird to me - I text her if something is important and can't wait. I think you are worried about texting her because you think she might have taken it ie so quilty conscious - I know my cleaner hasn't taken my stuff so as long as its not too late at night or too early I will text her if I really need something.

Chippymunks · 07/11/2021 19:31

Do you have any DC that could have borrowed it?

Chippymunks · 07/11/2021 19:32

Or left it at a friend’s house or is it in your DH’s wardrobe ?

S0upertrooper · 07/11/2021 19:37

Could it be hanging on the back of door that you don't normally close? We have hooks behind our bedroom door that we keep open all the time. DH is always hanging things there and then forgets about them.

TheLikesofMe · 07/11/2021 19:42

Has it been bin night since you last saw it?

MsSquiz · 07/11/2021 19:42

@SickAndTiredAgain I am well aware that the cleaner and her husband are different! I meant in regards to just asking if she had seen it!

If I had misplaced something in my house and had someone else been in around the time (DH, a cleaner, SIL, pet sitter, whoever) I would just text and ask if they'd seen it because I've misplaced it. Nothing accusatory or dramatic.

Theunamedcat · 07/11/2021 19:43

I used to be a cleaner it was suggested I had stolen a passport from an office block I used to clean they asked me to return it no questions asked Hmm so I insisted I had someone else from the cleaning company with me next time I cleaned she was horrified at what they left lying around cheque books the accountants sign in details her how to instructions for her payroll van keys van insurance documents car keys car insurance documents laptop's with the password on a post it right next to it the place was an utter fucking mess rubbish everywhere three huge offices to do in an hour and a half it was no wonder they misplaced a passport they were a bunch of pigs I decided not to continue to do that job they have struggled to fill the position since because my replacement found it too much work so she quit too

I didnt steal anything but they lost a decent cleaner over an accusation as I pointed out to my boss (who was the one who worked with me) with all the valuables they left behind regularly if I was motivated I could have ripped them off totally these people even left credit cards with the pin numbers lying around ffs and I had the keys

icedcoffees · 07/11/2021 19:44

Check in your wardrobe under other things that are hanging up, and all your drawers too. Also the wash basket and the washing machine.

FindingMeno · 07/11/2021 19:46

Why would a cleaner do this when they'd obviously be in the frame?

Very strange of them to think that you had done it when anybody could have done it

Look on the ‘ask me anything’ board for the finder of lost things. She has ‘visions’.
