Cleaner stole clothes?

TractorAndHeadphones · 07/11/2021 16:49

Got a new jacket that I left hanging on a chair (as far as I recall). New cleaner came, cleaned and tidied. Now I can’t find my jacket.

I’m reluctant to jump to conclusions but this is an item of clothing so not easily mislaid (like a piece of jewellery). I haven’t worn this jacket out yet. DP and I have both turned the house upside down but can’t find it. It’s a branded sports jacket (think Puma, Nike etc) so not particularly designer/valuable. I’ve considered texting the cleaner to ask if she’s seen it as well but I’d sound really stupid not knowing where stuff is in my own house!

AIBU to wonder whether she had something to do with it? Although it sounds like a strange thing to steak I see no other option. Nobody else has been in my house since.

@RunningFromInsanity

In no other profession or workplace would a missing jacket automatically be assumed stolen by an employee. Only cleaners are automatically assumed to be thieves.
Yep.. the value of her regular work with you is surely worth far more than a cheap jacket. It has been mislaid.. by you probably.
Lovely13 · 08/11/2021 19:43

Ask politely if she’s put it away for you somewhere. Give her benefit of doubt, but keep an eye. It’s likely you’ve put it somewhere daft, I do with it with things all the time. But theft can happen in the home (or garden).

Mydogmylife · 08/11/2021 19:44

@Frauhubert

Well, i had a new cleaner steal clothes from the wardrobe (expensive), jewellery (tiffany), perfumes (that were put away in a cupboard, still unboxed), even used underwear (agent provocateur), and other random items like makeup brushes etc. So yes, it is totally possible and not ‘discriminatory’ to accuse a new cleaner of stealing.
Not so stealth boast! We get it, you can afford a cleaner and fancy gear
AuntMasha · 08/11/2021 20:02

In a similar fashion I’ve lost the vacuum cleaner attachments. One day they were there, neatly placed next to the vacuum and then next time I look, they’ve mysteriously disappeared into another dimension.

I hope your jacket mysteriously turns up, OP, good luck.

SageRosemary · 08/11/2021 20:11

Could it be on the seat of a dining chair tucked under the table?

Minionbums · 08/11/2021 20:15

Sorry if this has already been asked but has anyone else been in your house? Or have you been out anywhere you could have left it behind? Have you been on public transport?

TheOccupier · 08/11/2021 20:18

Have you taken all other coats and jackets off their hangers in case it's under one of them?

Cryalot2 · 08/11/2021 20:24

Just wondering if it had turned up

NigellaAwesome · 08/11/2021 20:37
@Sparklfairy have you just made that up lol? I've just tried to search for the proof and there's nothing. You can film people In your home just not in their bedroom unless your a parent etc.
And you don't have to tell
Then!

And in all honesty the police wouldn't do a thing! A man was caught filming a 2 year old baby In aldi in my local area and the police said nothing could even be done about that even though the mum didn't give permission
Guidance on covert surveillance is found under the information Commissioners office guidance called ‘employment practices guidelines’.

Anyone filming employees within their property would be considered a data controller.

YANBU but tread carefully. Don't accuse her. Ask her if she's put it away somewhere.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 08/11/2021 21:36

I am ALWAYS texting my cleaner to ask her where she’s put stuff. Usually bits of the DC’s PE kits or DD’s dance leotards etc. It’s absolutely infuriating. She puts them in a different place every time so she’s quite used to me asking her Confused

I did have a cleaner who stole once. I noticed the odd thing going missing, loose change, some shopping vouchers I had. She cleaned for my mum too and my mum had noticed the same so it wasn’t just be being careless. Eventually my mum confronted her and she admitted it all and obviously we let her go.

GinniMcGinface · 08/11/2021 22:05

I reckon your DH resents the fact you got a cleaner and has deliberately stashed it so that you’ll suspect the cleaner and let her go. He’ll then be able to keep the house clean himself (he sounds like the meticulous type who may enjoy cleaning). He’s planning on saving the money up and taking you on a city break.

Hope the jacket turns up!

Fleshmechanic · 09/11/2021 01:08

Behind the doors? We have hooks on ours. I would just ask her if she'd seen it because you don't have a coat and it's cold lol. Be apologetic for bothering her. I honestly don't think she would steal your coat. Ask your kids too. Also check everywhere your partner has checked. Men are lazy lol.

Darlingx · 09/11/2021 04:49

authenticforgery

I'm so confused. Why would you make a thread about this and not just text and ask if she's put it away somewhere? It's really odd to immediately jump to thinking she's taken it?!
Exactly my thoughts

Beebeby · 09/11/2021 07:47

Op have you pulled out the dining chairs and checked on the actual seat where you park your bum. The reason I ask is we have 6 chairs but only use 3 most days and I lost a scarf. It wasnt until I had visitors and the pulled out the unused chair the we found the scarf. Same colour as seat padding.

anon666 · 09/11/2021 08:04

We had a cleaner that stole all the children's birthday and Christmas money, plus a lot of other stuff that was valuable like a Phillips Lumea.

It took us about a year to discover all the stuff that had gone.

The thing us, we kept noticing but dismissing it as "we must have lost it". This enabled her to keep going long after it started. It must have been 6 months in total, gradually.

We've had lots of honest cleaners, but one bad one does put you off. We caught her in the end with a £30 cash that was in my room, and then realised that one of my daughters hidden Christmas money was gone.

So to those who think YABU, it's possible. Trust your instincts.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 09/11/2021 08:29

i reckon you did wear it, tied it round your waist and it slid off while you were jogging, or whatever

FeeFi100 · 09/11/2021 08:50

‘FrogFairy
Have you been through your bins and recycling?

I once lost my purse after shopping. Assumed stolen so cancelled all my cards. It turned up a few days later - in my freezer.’

Love this! A few weeks back I couldn’t find my car keys. I knew I’d seen it about 30mins prior to loosing them.

Retraced my steps - only place I had been was to the bins outside. Looked in the bins, had to take lots of stuff out (the pretty big/deep ones). I’d thrown them in the recycling bin!!

FatBettyintheCoop · 09/11/2021 09:20

@Almostmenopausal

Most people are honest - 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes they are! Maybe you live in a very dodgy area but yes, 99% of the people living locally here are very honest.

All sorts of people regularly lose bags, wallets, keys and phones around the town, inside shops, accidentally dropped on the ground or left on park benches. You will often read a post on the local town Facebook group where someone’s lost something and giving a brief description and then a poster will reply saying they found it and handed it to nearest shop. Or someone saying they found X and to ring them.

I once found a purse with a huge bundle of notes, maybe a grand inside in 50 euro notes. It was on the low wall in the car park of the big hardware shop. I’m guessing someone plonked it down when they were getting in or out of their car. I took it into the shop and handed it into one of the assistants as that seemed the most likely place the person would start looking first. It’s a big family owned store that’s been there for years so chances are they knew the customer who lost it.

Wow this thread is still going - just to clarify no, it hasn’t turned up :(

My Nan used to clean at a local firm of Solicitors. One day a watch went missing. Who did they blame? My Nan, the cleaner. She was made out to be a thief. She didn't take the watch. The owner of the watch later found it at home. Why blame the paid help?? This kind of thing really irritates me with people thinking because somebody cleans for a living they are also a thief. I am sure there is a logical explanation.

Hahahha no, it was his idea to get a cleaner! He’s autistic though and hyperfocuses on things 😂😂😂

No one has actually noticed OP does have 2 version Grin first it says it was brand new, never worn, and then she worn it last time when cleaner cameHmm.
"No car. It’s new. I’ve only been out once since I last saw it and most definitely Wasn’t wearing it."

"The last time I wore it was day cleaner came, I took it off and hung it on the chair before her arrival. This was in the dining area that we don't use every day (we eat in front of the TV) so I wouldn't have walked past it or anything
I have only been out once since that day to the shop next door, nipped in and straight back out again."

It's a good thing you clarified because some people (I don't mean the poster you quoted) had already gathered up their "get your ducks in a row", "LTB", "Is he always so controlling?" cards for you because you mentioned he was a bit militant in his search.Grin

Forgive me but I don't see any/much difference in those two statements. I could still say something is new if I've only just bought it and worn it once.
