AIBU?

Changed nappy on restaurant table

I went to an independent pizza place for lunch with a friend. Her 4 month old did a poo. The restaurant only had one tiny toilet with no changing space. My friend used the empty table next to us to change her baby. I was mortified and other customers watched us, I think one was filming us surreptitiously. Am I wrong not to want to go to lunch with her again. Fwiw I have 3 small children and I would have changed them outside.

YABU: she had nowhere else to change the baby
YANBU: that was a disgusting thing to do

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Interesting that at least 15 people think I am being unreasonable

It's far more than that now Hmm

Interesting that none of them have chosen to post why you're BU - perhaps the type who find this kind of thing acceptable struggle to make a coherent point?

Entitled idiots the lot of them.

If I were in a restaurant and saw this I would certainly be loudly complaining and saying how unhygienic this is and pointing out suitable areas like toilets.

That's grim.

In the past I've changed mine across my lap in the loo. Or outdoors in pram.

This is why you should check if there’s a changing space first.

Your friend was between a rock and a hard place once he needed changing. I agree with others though, the carry cot or her lap would have been better than the table.

And the person filming needs a slap for filming someone else’s naked child regardless of how rude the mum was being.

She should have changed him in the pram but the person filming a baby having their nappy changed was very wrong.

Ew that is absolutely disgusting. I remember a couple of my mothers group friends used to change their babies nappies in the library where we sometimes hung out. I was so embarrassed by it - there were change tables they could have used in the bathrooms.

so what would she have done if you were just going for a walk somewhere and she needed to change the nappy outside-it wasnt too cold to go out in the firs tplace she could have done it really quickly in the pram
@museumum interesting. I just looked this up and you don’t have to have an accessible toilet if it is not practical due to space constraints.
This is true.

Family member owns a teeny tiny independent bar in a tiny rural village. Like 15-20 seats all in. They looked into all of this when they were setting up (they gutted the building and built back from scratch).

They do not have (or have to have) an accessible toilet or a baby change. They tried to fit one in, along with access, but it was impossible to do in their building.

Passed all inspections - it's not required if you're not able to physically do it.

Oh, and your friend should have done it in her pram carrycot or taken the baby back to the car and changed in the boot! It's gross to do it on a table!!

At this point 8% of voters think what she did was ok. Wow!

I'm appalled.

Why didn't she just put the toilet lid down and do it on there?

There is no excuse ever for doing this, it's disgusting. I would lose all respect for her and would probably just stop seeing her.

🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

Reminds me of an ex friend who let her child shit in a travel potty in the middle of a food court where people were eating their lunch.

It’s unbelievable what people think is acceptable when they have children!!!

I really have never understood why people get so uptight about baby changing facilities in every place they go.
If there isn't space for one you either sit on the toilet with baby on your lap and change them or on a mat in on the floor. It's not rocket science

I do hope you spoke to them about this.

I wouldn't want to remain friends with her. A 4 month old can be changed on your lap. That is disgusting behaviour and I am surprised the restaurant manager didn't ask her to leave.

Nowomenaroundeh · 28/10/2021 11:23

I would never do this but I'm wondering if it's very out of character behaviour for your friend? Is she so sleep deprived that she wasn't thinking straight or simply fallen into that shrunken world perception that she's forgotten not everyone is in a new mum bubble?

I would have been extremely embarrassed if I was you though.

This is my friends first child and she is a little obsessed, as I was with my first.

When my dd was little I used to take her out all the time and most of the time didn’t have access to proper changing facilities.

I did it outside in her stroller lots of times - even in winter - just did it very quickly. It’s never ok to change your baby near where people are eating.

Ewwwww!! Your friend is disgusting!

I have changed just outside the toilet (when there is space there) on top of the pushchair. What's wrong with that?! Hmm just put the changing mat on it

I would have changed DS on the restaurant floor. Although if I knew a place had no changing facilities I wouldn't go. I wouldn't change him in his pushchair outside, too cold for bare wet bums.

I'd have been more disgusted with someone filming a naked baby though

Disgusting and I would have called her out. I've changed my baby on her portable changing mat in many places, including tiny toilets. You make it work. She was being lazy

Report

Someone was filming a baby being changed? As in small child with its genitals exposed and some stranger whipped a camera out

I'm sure the act was being filmed and not up close and personal footage for sinister reasons. TBH she deserves to be shamed for this and for it to be on sm, it's fucking disgusting and incnsiderate.
