To take a pet to a non-pet holiday cottage if it will not go on to the premises?

I think this should be fine but need perspective.

Our dog does not like sleeping anywhere except his bed or the car. He's happy at the dog sitters but that's not an option.

We've had a spontaneous look for a short break next week abd found a perfect 3 night cottage except it's not dog friendly.

The dog wouldn't sleep in the property anyway, he only settles in the car and is very happy in there.

The property has designated parking that is slightly off from the property, so he'd never be actually in the garden or house. We'll be out of the property most of time anyway exploring and finding dog friendly pubs.

I can't see any reason why an owner would object to this, but very aware that if there's neighbourly eyes keeping an understandable look-our, the optics aren't great, even though we're not technically breaking any rules.

I'm considering emailing before booking to ask permission but concerned that the word "dog" may create a reaction without the true scenario being realised, and we lose the property.

AIBU to take him anyway and chance it?

You can't leave a dog alone overnight in a car which isn't even on the property you're staying at.
That's cruel.

I’d be concerned how safe and secure it would be to leave your dog in the car overnight. Also what if you take your dog for a walk, they get dirty and wet, you gonna put them straight back in the car? Not sure the owner is going to agree to this.

I wouldn’t be able to sleep knowing my dog was locked in the car out of sight. Also won’t they be cold? It’s forecast to be 6 degrees overnight and we are one of the warmer parts of the country

So the whole time you’re in the cottage from returning from your days activities until you head out the following day you’re going to leave the dog in the car? Fucking hell - poor dog.

Many farm dogs live outside year round. They're surprisingly hardy things.

OP, don't assume, just ask the owners first.

Gosh why would you want to leave him parked up in a strange area all night? What if the car park space is in public- people disturbing him or knocking on the window etc? Its been unseasonably warm too- I'd not want to kip in an unventilated car over night on my own?

Just find a kennel or try and change the booking. If I was the owner I frankly wouldn't believe he wouldn't ever be in the property or garden

But you surely won’t be out of the cottage from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed? Will he it’s be in the car all the time?

But what about evenings? He'll be on his own in the car unless you're out with him until 10/11pm. Also getting up early and him not coming onto the property at all isn't really realistic. You should look for dog friendly - there are plenty around.

What will you do with the dog when you're getting ready in the morning/having breakfast/relaxing in the evening etc.

We have a holiday let at the bottom of our garden and specify no dogs because we have dogs - one of whom is a bit reactive to other dogs and would spend all night reminding us that we had canine intruders.

Unless you're somewhere warm and not the UK it will be freezing at night. Poor dog can't spend the holiday in a car and you might find you come back in the morning and find the dog gone and your widow smashed. This must be a wind up

Rehome the dog would be my advice, if you are even considering or think it’s acceptable to let your dog sleep in the car, the dog deserves a responsible owner.

Yes we've done it before when he hasn't settled in previous dog friendly accommodation.

He sleeps at generally from 10ish to 8am without stirring.

When away we'll walk him late - sort of 11-12ish last walk and then 7-8ish in the morning. We do a lot of walking on holiday so he'll be shattered.

He's very used to being in the car, spends a lot of days out and about with DH who has his own business which involves a lot of site visits. He's as happy as Larry in the car.

You can't leave a dog alone overnight in a car. What if it eats something dodgy and gets the shits? Or someone comes looking to steal him? And you're gonna spend every moment except the time you're asleep outside the property? Even if it's pissing it down? Nah. Your dog will either have a shit time of being constantly locked in car alone. Or you'll let the dog in the house.

You either need to sort a dog sitter or find pet friendly accommodation, if you’re not willing to do one of those options you shouldn’t have a dog

Wow. I'm stunned anyone would treat their dog like this, that's appalling. If I saw your dog locked in the car, I'd call the RSPCA.
