To take a pet to a non-pet holiday cottage if it will not go on to the premises?

I think this should be fine but need perspective.

Our dog does not like sleeping anywhere except his bed or the car. He's happy at the dog sitters but that's not an option.

We've had a spontaneous look for a short break next week abd found a perfect 3 night cottage except it's not dog friendly.

The dog wouldn't sleep in the property anyway, he only settles in the car and is very happy in there.

The property has designated parking that is slightly off from the property, so he'd never be actually in the garden or house. We'll be out of the property most of time anyway exploring and finding dog friendly pubs.

I can't see any reason why an owner would object to this, but very aware that if there's neighbourly eyes keeping an understandable look-our, the optics aren't great, even though we're not technically breaking any rules.

I'm considering emailing before booking to ask permission but concerned that the word "dog" may create a reaction without the true scenario being realised, and we lose the property.

AIBU to take him anyway and chance it?

@ellyoctober I think if you are accepting that this cottage isn't going to work, then I'd be tempted to email the cottage owner and ask, then if they say no, then nothing lost!

Elphame · 21/10/2021 17:51

Leaving aside the morality of leaving your dog alone in the car overnight,
I wouldn't expect the holiday cottage owner to believe you if you said you'd be leaving the dog in the car.

It's a well worn argument and 99/100 times we know perfectly well that the dog will be inside.

berlinbabylon · 21/10/2021 17:52

OP just cancel that booking and find a cottage that is dog-friendly. There are loads of them. Yes it's October half term but it's not the height of summer.

ConstanceGracy · 21/10/2021 17:52

Yabu.. have read everything now.
And again, why ask if you’re adamant it’s fine ..

PinkStink · 21/10/2021 17:54

OP has clearly stated she has considered the points and changed her mind. She's answered all the questions and yet still the pile on continues.

SHE ISN'T TAKING THE DOG TO THIS COTTAGE

RTFT

HoppyHop · 21/10/2021 17:56

If you've decided not to stay there because of the dog you have nothing to lose by messaging the owners and asking if they would consider a dog. We have a holiday let that says no dogs but if someone contacted me directly I may say yes. It's worth asking IMO.
I hope you find somewhere.

Lotusmonster · 21/10/2021 17:57

“Mornin’ all” 😂😂😂 tbh OP, your idea sounds incredible. Please don’t do it!

Clementineapples · 21/10/2021 17:58

What the fuck is wrong with you?
No, you cannot leave a dog in a car EVER.
I do not believe for a single second that he just sleeps and naps and doesn’t need any attention or companionship throughout the day. This can’t be real surely?!

wingingit987 · 21/10/2021 17:59

I don't think you should be a dog owner of you won't be when someone pinches your dog!

LostArcher · 21/10/2021 18:00

I think the issue is that someone who is very allergic to animals may book the cottage next. I know it gets cleaned, etc but it may only take a few hairs dropped from your clothing to cause a reaction. That would really piss me off if I was booking somewhere that I was sure had had no pets in.

WorraLiberty · 21/10/2021 18:03

@CheltenhamLady

What kind of dog is it OP?
An unlucky one if this is how it's treated.
BaggyBloomers · 21/10/2021 18:04

The car will be anything but the dogs 'safe space' if a dog thief spots it. Dopey idea... back to the drawing board!

AutistAwayWithUrConditionalLuv · 21/10/2021 18:07

I can see why some OP ask for their thread to be deleted.

OP has accepted she's BU and is changing plans. Yet...

Artie30 · 21/10/2021 18:11

No way! Find a dog friendly place or don't go. Even if your dog likes sleeping in the car I wouldn't be comfortable with it at all. Only takes someone's to spot dog and smash glass to steal dog from the car during the night... plus it's just cruel to keep dog in car when you will be in the house.

@KarmaStar read the thread before you go off the deep end.

ZoeCM · 21/10/2021 18:15

Don't leave the poor dog in a car overnight!

Don't post without at least reading the OPs posts...
Peanutsandchilli · 21/10/2021 18:20

If the dog won't be going in the cottage, garden or drive, where's it going to go to the toilet?

We've stayed in dog free cottages without our dog but spent the days with friends with dogs and cats - so just as much risk of shedding dog hair as a dog staying outside...
theleafandnotthetree · 21/10/2021 18:25

I wouldn't do this, mainly because I wouldnt find it relaxing stressing about it but I have once or twice left my dog to sleep in the car, it's really not THAT big a deal for a night or two. There are plenty of animals sleeping in worse, and dogs are in fact animals all evidence on mumsnet to the contrary Hmm

Esspee · 21/10/2021 18:29

I don’t for a minute believe the dog would not end up in the house.

I am allergic to dogs so if I rented the cottage after you my holiday would be ruined. That is why dogs are not allowed.

WorraLiberty · 21/10/2021 18:30

Message to the thread Police:

Yes the OP has said she's not going to do it, but people are venting their anger that a so called dog lover even considered this.

They have a right to do that as long as they stick to talk guidelines.

SueSaid · 21/10/2021 18:33

'Yes the OP has said she's not going to do it, but people are venting their anger that a so called dog lover even considered this.'

Oh unclench. A dog that has been fed, exercised and well looked after can sleep in a car (even though it isn't). Stop being so melodramatic.

flippertyop · 21/10/2021 18:37

OP I have two holiday let's. In one of them I would be done with this. In the other which is in the ground of our property it would be an issue because it would set off my dogs and I would have to turn you away. I suggest you ask the owners
