To take a pet to a non-pet holiday cottage if it will not go on to the premises?

I think this should be fine but need perspective.

Our dog does not like sleeping anywhere except his bed or the car. He's happy at the dog sitters but that's not an option.

We've had a spontaneous look for a short break next week abd found a perfect 3 night cottage except it's not dog friendly.

The dog wouldn't sleep in the property anyway, he only settles in the car and is very happy in there.

The property has designated parking that is slightly off from the property, so he'd never be actually in the garden or house. We'll be out of the property most of time anyway exploring and finding dog friendly pubs.

I can't see any reason why an owner would object to this, but very aware that if there's neighbourly eyes keeping an understandable look-our, the optics aren't great, even though we're not technically breaking any rules.

I'm considering emailing before booking to ask permission but concerned that the word "dog" may create a reaction without the true scenario being realised, and we lose the property.

AIBU to take him anyway and chance it?

@ellyoctober

You can see the car from the property.
Not when you’re asleep in a bedroom!
ellyoctober · 21/10/2021 16:46

@Whatiswrongwithmyknee

And how is that?
In a bowl on the floor, or outside in a bowl on the ground if we're sitting around.

Er no. Confused

HappyGoLuckyLuLu · 21/10/2021 16:46

Fairly gobsmacked too that you'd consider doing this so it's definitely YABU from me too. I'm sure you'll find somewhere dog friendly - there's quite a difference between what you're proposing and camping when you'd be outside with the dog all day except when you sleep.

ellyoctober · 21/10/2021 16:47

I can't see his bed from my bedroom at home, it's a few doors away. It's not too dissimilar.

A bowl on the floor of the house? or the ground outside even if it's in a thunderstorm? I don't have a dog obviously so genuinely don't know how that would work. I'm guessing you have some sort of van if you can get a dog bowl on the floor for the night with enough room for your dog not to knock it over?

Hardbackwriter · 21/10/2021 16:48

In a bowl on the floor, or outside in a bowl on the ground if we're sitting around.

But you said the dog wouldn't be coming onto the premises - so your plan is to feed the dog by putting a bowl in the parking area? Every time?

ellyoctober · 21/10/2021 16:49

Okay as I say, IABU.

Well just stick to leaving him in there when we're camping. He definitely does NOT like canvas accommodation!

OP posts:
kikipie · 21/10/2021 16:49

This can’t be real, surely?

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 21/10/2021 16:49

So he wouldn't go inside the property at any point during the entire break?

That doesn't seem very nice

No thr floor of the car. It's worked before.

No no no no no no no no no

mushroom3 · 21/10/2021 16:51

No. You need to find somewhere else to stay or contact the owners who may agree.

SunshineCake1 · 21/10/2021 16:51

So you'll stay awake all night to check no one steals him ?
Itsseweasy · 21/10/2021 16:52

Don’t know where you are OP but the temperature inside my car the past couple of nights has been way below comfortable.
I personally think it’s cruel to do that but then I treat my pets like family!

Frogsonglue · 21/10/2021 16:53

I actually think it would be fine as long as you checked with the owners first. Contrary to what most people seem to think, a lot of dogs are perfectly happy in their own car, and see it as a safe space. If we visit other people's houses our dog will often whine and scratch to be let back in the car rather than be in an unfamiliar place. Have frequently stayed in youth hostels with groups where dogs have slept in the cars, but been checked on regularly when not out walking and taken out last thing and first thing. As long as it's secure it's fine.

I can’t see my sons beds from my bed. Maybe I’ll leave them in the car on holiday too 🙄
Frogsonglue · 21/10/2021 16:54

Our dog always chooses car over tent when camping too.

cushioncovers · 21/10/2021 16:55

Nope you can't do that. Shame on you for comprising your dogs care so you can have a few days away.

ellyoctober · 21/10/2021 16:55

@ScatteredMama82

Cripes, shouldn't we have left a teenager in with him when we went camping then? ShockShockShock

OP posts:
SpecialchildSupermum · 21/10/2021 16:55

The property isn’t suitable for your pet. By property that includes outside areas too. It’s very simple OP. You need to either find another pet friendly property, or find someone/kennels to look after your dog.

tootiredtospeak · 21/10/2021 16:55

Its freezing and you are risking getting found out booted out and losing your money. I wouldn't emailing cant hurt worst they can say is no.

User527294627 · 21/10/2021 16:55

Are you seriously considering leaving your dog all night in a car?! He’ll be fucking freezing, and probably anxious as shit, and people will probably see him and report it.

This is a total non-starter and honestly insane.

ellyoctober · 21/10/2021 16:56

He's so much more settled in there, it's like it's his safe space!

How can you know how hot it will get in the car? Does he get any airflow?
