To take a pet to a non-pet holiday cottage if it will not go on to the premises?

I think this should be fine but need perspective.

Our dog does not like sleeping anywhere except his bed or the car. He's happy at the dog sitters but that's not an option.

We've had a spontaneous look for a short break next week abd found a perfect 3 night cottage except it's not dog friendly.

The dog wouldn't sleep in the property anyway, he only settles in the car and is very happy in there.

The property has designated parking that is slightly off from the property, so he'd never be actually in the garden or house. We'll be out of the property most of time anyway exploring and finding dog friendly pubs.

I can't see any reason why an owner would object to this, but very aware that if there's neighbourly eyes keeping an understandable look-our, the optics aren't great, even though we're not technically breaking any rules.

I'm considering emailing before booking to ask permission but concerned that the word "dog" may create a reaction without the true scenario being realised, and we lose the property.

AIBU to take him anyway and chance it?

No.

Crate train your dog so he's always got a 'familiar space' to settle in and find dog-friendly accommodation.

ellyoctober · 22/10/2021 19:48

This is more like the reality

He's an indulged chap, he' would've been in a heated space (cooled in summer), have access to water and ventilation via windows slightly ajar with deflectors to prevent people reaching in.

He would have been in sight of bedroom window and house.

He would have been only in car when napping or sleeping.

He's got his big fat ortho bed from home to sleep on.

Lots of big hilly walks and fresh scents for mental stimulation. A bit of a swim in the sea which he loves. Sand digging to infinity Hmm.

Tuna for supper and some doggy ice cream.

I'm a terrible mutt owner.

IMO YABU, there’s a reason some places don’t allow dogs because they have allergies, other dogs around that are reactive, an entire host of reasons. Now I’m not gonna say you’re a bad person blah blah blah BUT it’s getting colder, your dogs obviously an indoor dog.. sleep in your car with no fresh air, getting cold, no water then see if you think your dog would be okay with this in a strange environment. There’s a massive things about dogs being snatched atm anyway, why would you risk it??

BasiliskStare · 22/10/2021 20:30

@ellyoctober - my apologies - I have obviously misunderstood - I hope you have a lovely holiday Flowers

Jzpap · 22/10/2021 20:34

Totally unacceptable. I’m shocked you’re even asking if it is a reasonable thing to do

nannykatherine · 22/10/2021 20:35

Poor dog
That’s cruel
It will be freeezing in the car all night alone in the dark 😫😫😫
I would be callling rspca if I saw that a dog was alone in a car all night and evening ..
How can you even consider it ????

starfishmummy · 22/10/2021 20:41

@edwinbear

Wow. I'm stunned anyone would treat their dog like this, that's appalling. If I saw your dog locked in the car, I'd call the RSPCA.
Exactly. Or at the very least concerned neighbours are going to be knocking on the cottage door or contacting the owner about it.
PinkStink · 22/10/2021 20:50

Oh god. People. She’s not going. What do people think they are adding after 12 pages.

Just filter the OPs posts.

You make yourself look ridiculous keeping on and on the pile on.

This is why MN is thought of as being full of vipers.

She posted, listened, changed her mind quickly and never argued. Yet post after post being really rude and aggressive.

To those saying call the RSPCA anyone with any knowledge will tell you they won’t even bat an eyelid.

We’ve all read posts about neighbours dogs being neglected and locked up for hours but if they have a scrap of shelter and a puddle to drink from the RSPCA aren’t interested.

They’re not going to enlist the flying squad to rescue a dog from a car FFS.

And all of this is a moot point as the OP ISNT GOING.

TheOnlyMrsM · 22/10/2021 20:58

What a view. What a van.

That does not look like a dog who would eat Jan, whoever she is.

Jam, on the other hand...

Personally, ours would prefer the croissants all of them and the milk too

FlyingWhistle · 22/10/2021 21:05

They may have their own dogs on-site that hate other dogs?

RonaLisa · 22/10/2021 21:09

@FlyingWhistle

They may have their own dogs on-site that hate other dogs?
Nobody's suggested that yet.
Winemeup · 22/10/2021 21:44

So the rules are just for others, are they?

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 22/10/2021 21:48

@ellyoctober

I think the consensus is IABU.

I'll keep looking, and tell him he's got to sleep soundly in the next pet friendly property, and not get up as previously and wander all night and disturb us all Grin

Why would you put him in the property if you say he sleeps better in the car? You were willing to do so in the non dog friendly place.
SallyWD · 22/10/2021 21:50

I haven't read the whole thread so maybe someone has suggested this but why not get house sitters? I use Trusted Housesitters UK and they're great. Someone stays in your house while you're away and looks after your pets. It's free for them and you. My cat absolutely hates being left alone and would hate a cattery even more! This works brilliantly for him. He stays at home but has company and I don't need to worry.

ellyoctober · 22/10/2021 21:57

@Justfortonight999

OP you could run a masterclass in how to respond to messages politely and calmly and defuse upset. So impressed. 👍🏻
Cheers, I'm a MN gimmer on a name change for various reasons, I find polite and reasonable discussion is the way to get the job done. And helps a pleasant MN experience. Flowers

I think I was just showing my obedience - by following the rule that he mustn't go in the car in future - I'll "tell" him MN has spoken and he must stay in the strange place and be unsettled.

What do you mean?

Not allowing a dog into a dog-free zone? Pretty much compliant rule following, I think.

OP posts:
PinkStink · 22/10/2021 22:08

Next you’ll be telling us it’s a cockerpoo. That’ll really tip the scales. And presumably you’ve had their ears pierced and fed it greggs sausage rolls Angry

Oh and you like Caesar Milan.

Strangeways19 · 22/10/2021 22:27

No, the idea of leaving your dog in a car overnight makes me feel a bit sick, this is against the animal welfare act, you must know this, you are placing your dog at risk of cold, strangers, what if something spooks him? Anything could happen and I feel it is a really irresponsible suggestion.
You should find a holiday which is dog friendly obviously.

Strangeways19 · 22/10/2021 22:34

@PinkStink that isn't true at all, the RSPCA will actually get involved where people neglect their pets, they do 'bat an eyelid', at the very least they will advise, and this would be an animal welfare issue if the OP had gone ahead, what is astounding is that she thought nothing of posting about this in the first place, or even gave it the headspace to seriously consider it without 'batting an eyelid'. That's whats wrong. You get a pet, you look after your pet, them's the rules, or you annoy people who are animal lovers & see them as part of the family.

PinkStink · 22/10/2021 22:35

She’s already killed the dog. She bored it to death reading all the posts on this thread Smile

Strangeways19 · 22/10/2021 22:46

@ellyoctober I don't know if you've asked yourself, but why do you think it is acceptable given the amount of people who don't, that it is reasonable to suggest what you have? It is a genuine question, you seem to be deflecting all of the outrage & advice, I know you have changed your mind, but I just wonder whether this is because you realise that it is just not ok to keep your dog in a car overnight, or whether you just have decided this due to the obvious objections from other people?
You seem to be suggesting that you spoil your dog, but you realise that caring for a dog isn't just about giving treats & walks right? its also about providing a safe, secure environment. Not really a locked car, even if you can see it when you're awake.
