Did they seem ‘normal’? Or did you get a strange feeling about them?

My husband met a woman who was in prison because she and her girlfriend had abused and then killed her son.

He knew who she was / what she had done so he would have felt horrible about it anyway, but overall he said it was a very upsetting experience.

Meggie2008 · 08/10/2021 21:28

William Beggs lived in the same street as my Papa. He always thought he was weird.

DeltaAlphaDelta · 08/10/2021 21:29

Yep, old school east london gangster linked to the Krays. In the circumstances I met him, the whole "gentleman gangster, loves his mum, only hurt those that deserved it" bullshit was plain to see. Proper scum bag.

sjxoxo · 08/10/2021 21:39

…Ronnie Biggs. Very interesting experience! I wouldn’t say ‘normal’; I would say charismatic, charming, cheeky. xo

TinaYouFatLard · 08/10/2021 21:43

A distant family member was “on holiday” with Rose West. She said that she was chilling and manipulative.

poorbuthappy · 08/10/2021 21:44

A family friend used to hang round with the krays once upon a time. He was lovely. 😂

steff13 · 08/10/2021 21:45

I've met a murderer and a woman who helped her brother hide a body of a woman he'd killed. They both seemed like normal people. The man has been in prison since the 80s, so he was a little bewildered by technology, etc.

Shock that would have been interesting.
Griefmonster · 08/10/2021 21:47

I have met a notorious (in certain circles) criminal rather than infamous (niche gangland type). Was charismatic, intellectual, gently spoken. Couldn't help feeling he enjoyed the contrast and was perhaps playing a part. By all accounts a vicious past and this was his reformed character after a long prison spell.

ImJustMum · 08/10/2021 21:48

Nathan matthews, Becky Watts's killer. Yes always knew something was off, very overly sexual and intrested in very young girls. When i realised he had been arrested, i said immediately it would of had some sexual motive.

MissM2912 · 08/10/2021 21:51

Yes. I know several well known terrorists/ freedom fighters depending on how you look at it. If you met them and didn’t know who they were you would just think kindly older men. Charming, funny, welcoming. Hard to reconcile sometimes when you know what they have been capable of in the past.

Peridot1 · 08/10/2021 21:53

Not infamous per se unless you were his victim’s family but knew someone who was murdered by her husband who I also knew. He was very ordinary.

I worked with her and knew her before she met him. They were introduced by someone we both worked with.

He also killed their foster daughter.

Utter bastard.

CallMeNutribullet · 08/10/2021 21:56

A friend's DH is in prison for 20 years. Gangland activity. In person He's very normal, friendly, outgoing and funny. He makes a real effort with her friends including very camp gay friend. He's definitely not what you'd expect from a gangster.

Watto1 · 08/10/2021 22:00

Worked with a guy who ended up in prison after the attempted murder of his partner. He came across as a very pleasant, normal bloke.

Cuck00soup · 08/10/2021 22:03

Jimmy Saville. And yes he was a horrible cock.

Subeccoo · 08/10/2021 22:08

I was hammered in a bar in Philadelphia at Easter about 7 years ago. It was run by a guy that was an infamous gangster but unfortunately I can't remember much about his story. The were pictures all over the walls of him and celebrities and all sorts of stories but as I said, I was pissed and me and my now husband had a bit of a row and I stomped off home to my friends house as we had a really early greyhound to catch the next morning.
What a crap story Grin I must ask the other half to remind me about it because I'm sure I could tell it better than that!!

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 08/10/2021 22:22

Yes. My Godfather was infamous, and so were the people he worked for. They were all lovely. I currently employ one, who was notorious in the 70s

Avocadoseed · 08/10/2021 22:29

Amazing thread!

I have several distance relatives who where part of all the Krays gangland world. Very much as you say all gentlemen gangsters loved their mother (my great grandmother) but there was nothing really gentlemanly about them. When my great grandmother died there was 100s of them in cars blocking the streets and just as many police. I remember going to one great uncles house when I was little, my aunt took me, she was very proud of her “gangland connections”, but my grandad was fuming when he found out I thought he was going to hit my aunt for taking me, I’d never seen him so angry, he despised the whole world they lived in. It was my grandmothers side of the family not his.
KingsleyShacklebolt · 08/10/2021 22:31

Yes, Rolf Harris. Didn't get any odd vibes from him at all, and spent most of the morning with him.

storminateacupagain · 08/10/2021 22:34

Yes had the "pleasure" of meeting Peter Tobin briefly..
Before he was convicted of murder but he was an evil evil man and gave me the chills just looking at him

Whiteswans74 · 08/10/2021 22:34

DHs cousin. They have different surnames fortunately and don't look at all alike. Parents of the cousin are lovely.

RightOnTheEdge · 08/10/2021 22:35

I've met Sheikh Mohammed, does he count?
He was very polite and quietly spoken.

Whiteswans74 · 08/10/2021 22:35

Cousin always seemed a bit strange.

Cheeserton · 08/10/2021 22:38

What does "on holiday" with Rose West mean? Actually on holiday with her, or what?
