am I being unreasonable to say I think most chocolate cake is overrated?

I'd think fruit cake or ginger cake, even banana loaf is tastier

I agree. I would eat chocolate cake if given it but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

PurpleDaisies · 02/10/2021 13:55

Ditto chocolate ice cream.

ivykaty44 · 02/10/2021 13:57

PurpleDaisies. i'm so pleased i'm not the only one, ive felt that this has been my guilty secret...

I agree I love a chocolate bar but chocolate cake, ice cream isnt as nice as other flavours

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/10/2021 13:58

Its personal choice.
I would eat chocolate cake over fruit cake or ginger cake because I dislike the flavour of ginger and cherries.

However if there were Lemon cake or orange or vanilla&raspberry... I would probably choose them over chocolate cake. Or even a nice baked warm scone with cream (but skip the jam, i think it detracts from the flavour).

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 02/10/2021 13:59

I don’t like chocolate cake at all. Just too rich. Give me a chunk of Victoria sponge or ginger cake
any day.

IHateWasps · 02/10/2021 13:59

Fruit cake? Fruit cake isn't acceptable let alone better than chocolate. It's an abomination!

galacticpixels · 02/10/2021 14:00

I love a warm slice of chocolate fudge cake. But carrot cake is my favourite cake.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 02/10/2021 14:02

There are better options than chocolate cake but you seem to prefer the more Calvinist offerings of a fruit loaf which hold no appeal to me. So on balance I've had to plump for YABU.

cobblers123 · 02/10/2021 14:03

Coffee and walnut for me. I don't like chocolate cake at all and my heart always used to sink when working in the office if someone brought one in for a birthday to give out.

PurpleDaisies · 02/10/2021 14:05

Coffee walnut or carrot are my favourites too, with honourable mentions for lemon drizzle, Jamaica ginger and Victoria sponge.

mum2jakie · 02/10/2021 14:06

Yep much prefer a Victoria sponge

I adore fruit cake

I agree. The cake itself is often too dry, and the icing usually too sweet. Give me a lemon drizzle or Victoria sponge any day.

PurpleDaisies · 02/10/2021 14:08

I love a good fruit cake.

CreepingDeath · 02/10/2021 14:08

Now I'm hungry....

I think chocolate cake promises a lot, but rarely delivers. I've only ever had a few truly moist, delicious, rich, fudgy pieces of chocolate cake in my life. And many more dry, tasteless ones unfortunately.

But when it's done right, it's utterly fab!

Are you joking?
Fruitcake with a generous slice of Wenslydale cheese and grapes us a great treat (especially my fruitcake! )

Dragonpox · 02/10/2021 14:10

I find all chocolate puddings and cakes too bitter. I far prefer fruity things like Victoria sponge or lemon drizzle and fruity puddings like apple crumble and lemon tart.

noprofessional · 02/10/2021 14:10

How dare you

chitchatchatter · 02/10/2021 14:13

I’m not sure. I think I need to eat some chocolate cake, then some fruit cake, then some banana cake, then maybe make a decision….purely for scientific research purposes of course 😉

Roominmyhouse · 02/10/2021 14:14

I do like chocolate cake but I’d pick carrot cake or lemon drizzle over it every time.

RoyKentsHairyBack · 02/10/2021 14:14

I think chocolate cake is really hard to do well. When it is then it's lovely - my mum has a post war recipe which is cocoa and coconut and it is delicious despite having very little chocolate in it.

Victoria Sponge or Carrot cake are my faves. I do love a fruit cake actually and dd's favourite is Ginger Cake which we make every year instead of Christmas cake.

My grans cherry cake was the absolute best though but since she died I've never found a good enough replacement even though I have the recipe - I can only assume she was a cake witch!

NotMyCat · 02/10/2021 14:14

Hmmm. It depends
Plain chocolate cake, not keen
Chocolate fudge or with buttercream or frosting or anything tasty then yes please!
But you can't compare a plain chocolate cake to Victoria sponge as that has fillings IYSWIM

isseys4xmastinselcats · 02/10/2021 14:16

im like this i like all cakes but i think chocolate cake is disapointing i think its because chocolate cake is made with cocoa in it instead of real chocolate so it looks good but dosent taste right

KT727 · 02/10/2021 14:18

I like chocolate cake that has been made using lots of nice quality melted chocolate and that preferably isn't too dark. I find cocoa-dominant (with no melted chocolate) regular chocolate cake boring and prefer Victoria sponge, carrot cake, coffee cake etc.
