am I being unreasonable to say I think most chocolate cake is overrated?

I'd think fruit cake or ginger cake, even banana loaf is tastier

Chocolate is amazing. Once in a blue moon. Most of the time it's dry & disappointing. I have T2 diabetes (diet controlled) so unfortunately don't have any cake any more, let alone bake 😭

Roonilwazlib1 · 02/10/2021 14:20

YANBU! Chocolate cake is usually a let down, its just never chocolatey enough!

Fruit cake is awful though!

For me I love Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, strawberry and white chocolate, salted caramel cake etc...

KT727 · 02/10/2021 14:21

The BBC Good Food 'Ultimate Chocolate Cake' is delicious- moist (because of the buttermilk), made with melted chocolate, slightly brownie textured etc. and especially nice when made with 150g milk chocolate and 50g of dark chocolate rather than 200g dark chocolate.

Gagagardener · 02/10/2021 14:32

Chocolate induces migraine in many people, including close family members. I am tired of its being everywhere. It overwhelms the taste buds, and is often unsubtle flavour in flavour. (I don’t generally like shop cake, puddings or biscuits.) Chocolate ice cream? No thanks.

WestendVBroadway · 02/10/2021 14:32

Dried fruit has no place in a cake, in fact it belongs in the bin. Please send me all of your unwanted chocolate cake, I will find a place to eat destroy it.

vampirethriller · 02/10/2021 14:35

Yes. Coffee cake is the best.

CeeJay81 · 02/10/2021 14:41

Totally agree. I love chocolate but prefer other cakes to chocolate. I prefer a Victoria, lemon drizzle or something like Salted caramel or millionaires cake(love caramel everything!). Same goes for Ice cream.

Cattenberg · 02/10/2021 14:42

YABU. Chocolate cake is ones of the best foods on the planet. Although coffee cake is excellent too, as is a fresh, tangy lemon drizzle.

Cattenberg · 02/10/2021 14:44

Most supermarket cakes are too sweet, though. I much prefer homemade.

MatildaJayne · 02/10/2021 14:47

Homemade chocolate brownies made with melted chocolate are lovely. Standard chocolate sponge cake, meh. I’ve had a lovely chocolate Guinness cake before now though.

Utini · 02/10/2021 14:54

@KT727 I was just about to recommend that, it's amazing! I make it with 50% milk, 50% dark chocolate, and leave out the coffee. I'm gluten free and find it works really well with gluten free flour.

diddl · 02/10/2021 14:56

"I’ve had a lovely chocolate Guinness cake before now though."

That sounds nice.

I like Sachertorte.

vincettenoir · 02/10/2021 14:58

I agree. I do like a hot chocolate fudge cake with ice cream. But a regular choc sponge isn’t usually up to much.

LouLou789 · 02/10/2021 15:06

I think all cake is overrated. Give me a slice of cheese on toast any day 🤣

Tulipomania · 02/10/2021 15:10

Carrot cake
Coffee and walnut
Lemon Drizzle

those are my faves.

Tulipomania · 02/10/2021 15:10

I'd rather have a chocolate brownie than chocolate cake.

Moonwatcher1234 · 02/10/2021 15:13

@noprofessional

How dare you
Grin echo this times a million.

How are these chocolate cake detractors allowed to walk amongst us.

trancepants · 02/10/2021 15:18

Another vote for carrot cake as the best cake. I also love walnut cake. I don't dislike chocolate cake, it's often quite nice, it's just not the best.

The worst cake is red velvet. It's just chocolate cake with red dye. Why? At best just stupid but inoffensive but sometimes you can taste the chemical tang of the red dye.

unboxedandmessy · 02/10/2021 15:18

Nothing much beats a nice a nice, moist Chocolate cake, IMHO, but I also like Lemon Meringue Pie and Millionaire Shortbread (If that counts).

ivykaty44 · 02/10/2021 16:01

chocolate brownies, now imo they are worse! little flat brown cakes that just crumble, or are hard and have no particular taste.

with chocolate cakes its the frosting that I dislike more than the cake, it can be sickly - never spread evenly through the cake and doesn't taste of much.

coffee cake tastes of coffee, banana cake bananas - but chocolate cake doesn't taste of much

TheWonderCat · 02/10/2021 16:02

I like them all.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 02/10/2021 16:04

shop brought brownies are generally terrible. Dry and crumbly. Easy to make good brownies at home though.

DotBall · 02/10/2021 16:05

I love a booze soaked fruit cake and love the Sainsburys Best Christmas cake bar. Enough to satisfy the urge without feeling like a pig.

PartyPotato · 02/10/2021 16:07

I like chocolate cake but there’s a fair few others I’d pick first before I got to the chocolate cake. A lot of people arent a fan of chocolate-flavoured things even if they normally like regular chocolate. DH doesn’t like chocolate ice cream or puddings, but eats whispa golds like they’re going extinct.

Figmentofmyimagination · 02/10/2021 16:07

Chocolate cake is the one most likely to suffer from cheap ingredients and from significant gap between visual promise and actual taste imho.
