chocolate cake overrated

am I being unreasonable to say I think most chocolate cake is overrated?

I'd think fruit cake or ginger cake, even banana loaf is tastier

I’m afraid you just haven’t found a good baker! Chocolate cake done well is divine; it’s moist and creamy and delicious with a cup of tea. I wish I didn’t love chocolate so much, I bet I’d be thinner.

Dragonpox · 03/10/2021 07:31

@HoppingPavlova

You can’t beat a nice chocolate cake served with a dollop of cream. Can’t stomach fruit cake and the others mentioned would be a poor second to a chocolate (esp mud).
I feel like it just needs a sharpness to cut through, like a dob of raspberry or cherry. Otherwise it's just blaaah

Chocolate cake with a dollop of creamy plain yoghurt is delish.

Biancadelrioisback · 03/10/2021 08:24

I hate chocolate in any form other than a slab/bar.
Chocolate cake? Rank
Hot chocolate? Nope
Choc sauce? Boak
Etc

It's not about the baker, it's just that actually, we don't like chocolate cake. Just as some people don't like the taste of tea, or the texture of marshmallows, or pineapple on pizzas. It's a different stokes for different folks thing. I like other flavours and types of cake just fine!

I don't like chocolate cake, or chocolate ice-cream, or any kind of chocolate flavouring. I like chocolate itself just fine, but as a flavour of things... nope. Fortunately this means I can cut down on the amount of cake I have as people assume everyone loves it - despite the fact that there is NO universally loved food - and buys us chocolate cake as a treat or thank-you.

I don't like wine much either. There, I said it!

londonrach · 03/10/2021 08:32

Chocolate cake is the must have but needs to made right ..not dry and not too rich. Your other choices are yuk and should never be eaten. However Victorian cake..unless you put cream in it ..who do that and ruin it ..it's hard to get wrong and perfect cake for any situation. Chocolate ice cream totally agree ..yuk...too sickly.

londonrach · 03/10/2021 08:35

who eats fruit cake. .I'm not a fan of Christmas cake either...

Hugsgalore · 03/10/2021 08:35

I was never a fan of chocolate cake. I make my daughters cake every year for her birthday and last year made chocolate for a change and because kids love it so much. I found a cake on Instagram and oh my god it is the best chocolate cake I have ever eaten. The recipe uses dark chocolate but I used half dark and half Belgian milk chocolate instead. I've made it a few times since as cupcakes and they are always a hit.

pelosi · 03/10/2021 08:36

Everyone has their likes and dislikes for course but YABU to say it’s overrated. I bake cakes and they generally disappear the same day, but the chocolate cake with chocolate ganache is the fastest to disappear.

pelosi · 03/10/2021 08:37

Do share the recipe @Hugsgalore Smile sounds selfish

pelosi · 03/10/2021 08:38

delish not selfish!

TheAntiGardener · 03/10/2021 08:44

Yes, the texture and flavour generally aren’t great. It isn’t actually very chocolatey either so ends up a dry, crumbly disappointment or horribly sickly with lashings of ganache or buttercream to overcompensate.

I disagree about chocolate ice cream. Generally disappointing, but if done well it is amazing. A good chocolate gelato is chocolate heaven.

Chocolate yogurts were good. In no way tasting of actual chocolate, but I liked them. Never see them now.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 03/10/2021 08:54

Chocolate cake with ground almonds in the mix is the food of the gods.

Blackmagicqueen · 03/10/2021 09:04

You haven’t had my homemade chocolate cake and homemade fluffy chocolate frosting op! The texture is super moist, it is dark and gorgeous melt in your mouth. I add a tiny bit of coffee which really enchances the chocolate flavour. I have had so many compliments and converted many people who ‘don’t normally eat chocolate cake’ with it. There are a lot of dry pale awful excuses for chocolate cakes out there so I’m not surprised they get a bad rap!

Blackmagicqueen · 03/10/2021 09:05

Forgot to say as well it is the perfect balance so indulgent but not sickly.

Hugsgalore · 03/10/2021 09:18

@pelosi it's a recipe on Thida Bevingtons Instagram page. It makes a huge batch too. The chocolate frosting that goes with it is divine too. Its very soft though so ideal for colder months.

TheAntiGardener · 03/10/2021 09:20

A flourless chocolate cake with ground almonds is a real treat I must say.
BoredZelda · 03/10/2021 09:32

It depends on the type of cake. There isn’t really such a thing as a “chocolate cake”. Some chocolatey cakes are lovely, but some are just too rich and too sweet.

fishonabicycle · 03/10/2021 09:34

Chocolate is my least favourite cake too! Fruit or ginger would be much better

Goldbar · 03/10/2021 09:34

I agree. It's often simultaneously too rich, too bitter and (depending on the icing) to sweet as well.

Chocolate brownies are almost always a disappointment.

Give me a nice slice of banana bread or lemon drizzle cake any day.

Darceyhemingway · 03/10/2021 09:41

100%. I'd rather have no cake than a chocolate cake

Tinpotspectator · 03/10/2021 09:54

I prefer lemon or coffee cake, and nothing but vanilla ice cream, ever.

Pinkchocolate · 03/10/2021 10:10

I was joking 😳 I am well aware that people have different tastes.
