chocolate cake overrated

am I being unreasonable to say I think most chocolate cake is overrated?

I'd think fruit cake or ginger cake, even banana loaf is tastier

I was thinking this just this morning!

It's generally dry, claggy and heavy. I've never enjoyed it and neither does DS!

Home made carrot, nut and raisin cake is my favourite to make by far, or oat raisin cookies.

Queenoftheashes · 02/10/2021 17:13

@IHateWasps

Fruit cake? Fruit cake isn't acceptable let alone better than chocolate. It's an abomination!
This is the correct answer
StrawberrySquash · 02/10/2021 17:39

Too many chocolate cakes don't have much chocolate in them and are disappointing. But a good one is great!

GrouchyKiwi · 02/10/2021 17:42

I make a bloody good chocolate cake without using chocolate, just cocoa.

But when out and about I prefer a lemon cake since they're generally always excellent. Chocolate can be hit and miss.

BakingOfTheFoodCats · 02/10/2021 17:43

I don’t like fruit cake but yes chocolate cake is over rated

Noshowwithoutpunch · 02/10/2021 17:46

Best cake ever is the madeira with the layer of raspberry jam and buttercream covered in fondant icing aka supermarket Birthday cakes.

AliceMcK · 02/10/2021 17:47

O I thought I was the only one!

In order
Victoria Sponge
Lemon drizzle with a nice passion fruit sauce
Ginger cake
Fruit cake (no marzipan)
Swiss roll, which I know isn’t technically a cake but still better.
Chocolate cake

Oooo now I’m craving Swiss roll and custard 😋

BiLuminous · 02/10/2021 17:47

No! I absolutely hate it. Love chocolate, and literally everything else that has chocolate in/on it except for chocolate cake. Mini rolls are the worst form. DISGUSTANG

HunterHearstHelmsley · 02/10/2021 17:50

Chocolate cake is vile and so is fruit cake. I have a baking friend who will often do a chocolate cake. I have been known to secret bits into my handbag so I don't have to eat it Grin all of the cake calories but none of the tasty goodness.

Lemon drizzle though 🤤

ThinWomansBrain · 02/10/2021 17:52

most commercial chocolate cakes aren't chocolatey enough.
thread has reminded me that I bought carrot cake when I was shopping this morning Grin

MintyGreenDream · 02/10/2021 17:52

Yanbu lemon,Carrot or red velvet are much tastier imo

ThinWomansBrain · 02/10/2021 17:53

depressing when I was shopping - supermarket was busy filling shelves with christmas cake, christmas pudding, stollen.....

DarlingCoffee · 02/10/2021 17:55

Fruit cake seems to have fallen out of vogue but I love a good fruit cake over chocolate cake any day.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 02/10/2021 17:57

@LouLou789

I think all cake is overrated. Give me a slice of cheese on toast any day 🤣
Me too! I do have a lovely boiled fruit cake recipe that gets made occasionally.
MakkaPakkas · 02/10/2021 18:01

This thread is inspiring me to go out in the rain to get cake...
Our local cafe do an excellent light and delicious black forest gateaux

wtfisgoingon2021 · 02/10/2021 18:02

I always think chocolate cake has a wet dog smell to it.
All choc cakes homemade and shop bought.

Dragonpox · 02/10/2021 18:14

Hummingbird cake with cream cheese frosting is my absolute favourite.

MilduraS · 02/10/2021 18:17

I can't believe what I'm reading. There are people who don't like chocolate cake??

ISpyCobraKai · 02/10/2021 18:20

I don't dislike cake as such, but I don't have a sweet tooth and would choose cheese everytime.
That said, I do like profiteroles or choux buns with chocolate on.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/10/2021 18:22

@PurpleDaisies

I agree. I would eat chocolate cake if given it but it wouldn’t be my first choice.
I agree, @PurpleDaisies.

All cake is good cake (apart from the German apple cake you make from the Herman sourdough starter - that is not worthy of the name cake), but chocolate is not my first choice of cake.

Shannith · 02/10/2021 19:07

I'm not a fan of 90% of chocolate cake. It's hard to bake well if you just follow a normal sponge re how's and just add in cocoa powder. It's always meh. Bit insipid and dry.

But made with ground almonds, brown sugar and melted dark chocolate and a bit of oil - not a brownie - (you don't melt the butter) then it's good. Add some fudge icing and maybe ganache and helloooooo.

HoppingPavlova · 02/10/2021 19:12

You can’t beat a nice chocolate cake served with a dollop of cream. Can’t stomach fruit cake and the others mentioned would be a poor second to a chocolate (esp mud).

ivykaty44 · 02/10/2021 23:39

I can't believe what I'm reading. There are people who don't like chocolate cake??

even as a baby I refused the chocolate sponge pudding, but would eat everything else

Fifthtimelucky · 03/10/2021 00:01

I agree that chocolate cake is often disappointing. Good ones are brilliant though.

I rarely eat chocolate ice cream as I've never found one I like. I'd rather have a good vanilla (Mackie's is my favourite) with homemade chocolate sauce.

groundcontroltomontydon · 03/10/2021 00:02

Fruit cake is the hair shirt of cakes: a chore to make - and an even bigger chore to eat
