To think this is far too much food?

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

@Biscoffee

Op, I have many grandchildren and if this had happened in my house Id laugh about it and it would go down in the future as the day the boys ate all the dinner. In fact I’d probably even tell them they’d need bigger shoes to go home in and a pair of grandads trousers.

Rejoice in the boys, fill your heart with the joy of them and know how lucky you are to have them round your table.

Best comment on this thread (although some of the others have been hilarious!)

You sound like a lovely grandparent Smile

@TinselTitsAndGlitteryBits

There's so much wrong on this thread..

A poster making 500g of mince last TWELVE meals?
The amount of people putting celery in bolognaise?
Someone just saying that add a tin of beans to theirs?

I feel like I've just entered a parallel universe!

FWIW, I think 500g of mince is a lot for just the two kids - but they've eaten it now. So there's not much that can be done.
I'd be more annoyed if I had plated it up and they wasted it.

Have you ever ventured onto a thread specifically about bolognese/ragu? They are a treat and a half - very competitive, with lots of disgusted and revulsion at other people's recipes. Must say some of the recipes are "interesting".

There's usually a good amount of posters with a Nonno or two (think ragu threads are magnet to them). So if you do ever head to one, please note you better not mention you think celery is wrong or that you use garlic.

Oblomov21 · 01/10/2021 06:19

I don't think it's that horrendous. Could have stretched it to 3, probably not 4 of us. We are big eaters here.

When i make spag Bol, I use 2x 750g mince. Or sometimes 2 x 1kg. This feeds us dinner and I then have big bag left over to freeze.

This very week, For year 8 cooking at school Ds2 had to buy 500g mince, to make spag Bol. I was shocked how small it was. I was also shocked how once cooked down and the fat and water come out of the meat, like a pp posted, how little 'content' there was to the end product.

HeronLanyon · 01/10/2021 06:21

lavender a bold and brave ‘Nonno’ reference there !
I am so sick of hearing the more frequent ‘Nonna’ in every single cooking show I watch. (Shouldn’t be I know).

Tal45 · 01/10/2021 06:55

Why should you make dinner if you've just got in from work and he's dished it all up for the grandkids? Send him out for take away surely??

LynetteScavo · 01/10/2021 06:56

Unless the kids are overweight and generally eat too much, I don't think it was too much for them to eat. It was a lot, but presumably they were hungry? It's not as though they are a white tub of ice cream and two packets of biscuits.

If they were hungry, what should your DH have done?
Personally I would have out a portion aside for you first. Ask him to do that next time.

There have been times when I've put portions aside for DH and the DC have asked for more food. I'm going to prioritise active DC with "underweight" BMIs over an overweight adult.

Was there anything else for them to eat? Could they have had bananas and yogurt for example?

This is a strange thread.

FreeBritnee · 01/10/2021 07:06

Wouldn’t have bothered me in the slightest if it had been fed to kids.

ItsSnowJokes · 01/10/2021 07:07

Yawn....... another competitive under eating thread.

If they ate it, it wasn't too much. Annoying you had no food left but they were obviously hungry.

For the poster who said it feeds 12 I am sure you must be Victoria Beckham and your fave food is salt on wholemeal bread that is your treat and fills you up for a month.

Spiindoctor · 01/10/2021 07:10

A lb of meat used to do 2 adults and 2 children ime.
I would say more pasta less sauce.
Should be filling them up with veg really.

Newusernamelalala · 01/10/2021 07:12

If they were hungry enough to eat it then it wasn’t too much food. But yanbu that he should have given them half, saved half for the adults, and given them something else. It’s way too much meat for just two people. I feel a bit sick thinking about it

Heronwatcher · 01/10/2021 07:12

If they ate it they were hungry, it sounds relatively healthy at least and it doesn’t sound as though there was much else in it or much pasta. Next time tell your DH you’d like a portion please and throw a few veg in. Total non issue. Not in any way shocking.

Sceptre86 · 01/10/2021 07:13

I would say it is a lot but it wasn't bulked out with any veg or garlic bread so I can appreciate if they were hungry they might have managed it. I would use 500g of mince to cook for dh and myself and we would always have enough for the next day. Had the kids not eaten much lunch or anything after school?

Newusernamelalala · 01/10/2021 07:14

Also, I always bulk up bolognese with red lentils. You can’t tell, the meat goes further and it’s healthier

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/10/2021 07:14

I'm not trying to work out if I'm underfunding or overfeeding my children....

Admittedly my non-bolognese contains all sort of veg so goes further... but its 5/6 portions on average. 3 dinner, 1 freezer, 2 lunch (lunch portions are smaller)

TheWitchersWife · 01/10/2021 07:16

All this thread has done is made me realise what I call spaghetti bolognese would upset a lot of people 😬
I actually hate when other people cook it because I don't like carrots or celery in it, seems like a stew.
I think I basically make a chilli con carne and put it on pasta. The bolognese gods will hate me.

mynameiscalypso · 01/10/2021 07:18

My two year old could probably eat that amount. He is a bottomless pit when it comes to spaghetti Bolognese.

knittingaddict · 01/10/2021 07:23

@Clymene

So many things that are Shock

Two small children eating 500g of mince plus pasta

You saying you made it for you and your DP but he doesn't eat red meat

Your recipe

The poster saying she can feed 12 people from 500g mince.

Oy vey!

What a perfect summing up of all that is wrong with this thread. Grin
Dontforgetyourbrolly · 01/10/2021 07:24

I find that English people serve pasta like mince with a side of pasta . In reality it should be pasta with a small portion of sauce stirred through, that would be the problem.

PieMistee · 01/10/2021 07:24

We are another 500g for 10 portions.
But we add loads of veg (onion, carrot, peppers, mushrooms), two tins of tomatoes and beluga lentils. Healthier, cheaper and lazy as second meal we usually either make into a Shepard's pie or add kidney beans and spice to make a chilli.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/10/2021 07:29

I love a Bolognese thread, but this one has excelled.
Some of the posts are absolute gems. Grin

StMarysKettle · 01/10/2021 07:42

So your bolognese isn't bolognese and your shepherd's pie isn't a shepherd's pie
ittakes2 · 01/10/2021 07:57

I think he made the mistake of giving them too much mince and should have given them more pasta. But they ate the lot so they were clearly hungry enough and it was the right portions. But you should have said to save some for you.

diddl · 01/10/2021 07:58

Oh come on now Op-know your place!

You cooked it and wanted to eat some as well??

But the mighty man decreed how it should be served-so you must laugh & merrily cook something else for yourself.

Wazzzzzzzup · 01/10/2021 08:01

Is there evwn point putting less than 50g of meat into a portion? Just put a stock cube 👀 There is a poit when i don't think the amount of meat is even worth a bother and it would be better off just fully veggie

EspressoDoubleShot · 01/10/2021 08:02

@ZenNudist

I know you didn't specify exactly what size saucepan but we aren't talking milk pan and most pans up from the milk pan would hold more bolognaise than 2 portions.

500g mince will do us many meals. I use a large onion, 2 carrots and 3 sticks of celery plus at least the tomato tin filled with water, maybe mushrooms. I sometimes add spinach but only when serving. I grate cheese on top. My spaghetti portion size for kids that age is about one adult portion to share between 2. I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.

How they managed to put away a whole pan I don't know. Even of your basic 1 onion plus tin tomato.

12 or more portions!?? The mn spag Bol feeds 14 for 4 days…it’s the new mn chicken
