The Lancet calls us “Bodies With Vaginas”

On behalf of all women and girls, I am f*cking livid.

twitter.com/thelancet/status/1441372277786951681?s=21

Be in no doubt, when society removes the words we use to define ourselves they remove the means for us to gather, to push back, to protect ourselves, to fight for our rights, to roar. It’s slow and almost imperceptible and then, BOOM…you have the likes of Ed Davey proclaiming on prime time radio that we can’t exclude men.

I am NOT a Body with a Vagina, I am WOMAN hear me roar.

Yes, NiceGerbil. That's the next step.

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 25/09/2021 14:44

I've complained to the Lancet editor and if I don't get an appropriate response I plan to make a complaint under the Equalities Act. Hideous misogyny.

shouldistop · 25/09/2021 14:45

@Whatiswrongwithmyknee what contact details did you use? I had a look on their website and couldn't see how to make a complaint.

PrincessNutella · 25/09/2021 14:56

It really is disgusting.

VickyEadieofThigh · 25/09/2021 15:04

@Theeyeballsinthesky

This is where beeeee kiiiind/ “no debate/TWAW gets you. We were told “No one is trying to erase the word woman you hateful bigots” but they are, it’s happening right in front of us. If you cannot name what a woman is, if we cannot name our sex then how can we fight the sexism women face

Everyone knows what a woman. It’s not complicated at all. It’s certainly not complicated when it comes to whi to keep at home & deny education too (Afghanistan) or who to deny abortions to (Texas) the Swiss knew who they were denying the vote to until 1971.

It’s absolutely rage inducing but also very scary

Yep - this.

I've emailed the editor.

shouldistop · 25/09/2021 15:14

I've emailed the editor too

shouldistop · 25/09/2021 15:17

I'd go so far as to say calling women a body with a vagina is hate speech

VickyEadieofThigh · 25/09/2021 15:19

@shouldistop

Absolutely.
Helleofabore · 25/09/2021 15:30

It really is the next step from ‘birthing bodies’.

CindersPumpkin · 25/09/2021 15:36

I know that there are many ideas as to why this is happening. It's not a grass roots social change. It's bothering me with the surrogacy push too.

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 25/09/2021 15:40

The thing that bothers me the most is this language isn’t inclusive to anybody. Some transwomen have artificial vaginas - is it also supposed to speak to them? Is there any trans man in the world who wants to be referred by their natal genitalia? And that’s all aside from the dehumanising language used to the refer to half (over half in the UK) or the population basis.

On a side topic, howdo you get the problems with this across to others? I mean I know lots of people who know it would be ridiculous but my fucking DP tries to play devils advocate all the fucking time with his ‘inclusivity’. He accepts there’s a problem with not being consistent in mens health but I think he’s really fallen foul of the side of ‘rename everything to be inclusive’ - including excepting he’s body with a penis.

shouldistop · 25/09/2021 16:07

Oh lookie here, they know what a man is.

Call him a person with a penis from now on, or a non-woman.

@shouldistop

I'm confused, what do they mean by "man".

I think they mean penis-haver or body with a dick, maybe prostate carrier? Not sure what these newfangled terms such as "man" mean.

@timeisnotaline can you share your letter as a template and provide contact details we can report this too please?
We are now officially living between the covers of The Handmaid's Tale.

Jarstastic · 25/09/2021 18:30

@EastWestWhosBestt
I'd better not because of copyright but it's basically reporting the story and includes tweets from academics like
“Just wrote the Lancet to tell them to take me off their list of statistical reviewers and cancel my subscription and never contact me about anything ever again,” Prof David Curtis, a retired psychiatrist and honorary professor of genetics at University College London, wrote on Twitter.

I'm just not surprised at all the Guardian hasn't picked up on it. The wokery has gone made.

And I wonder how (non operated on) Trans Women would feel about being described as bodies with penises.

ddl1 · 25/09/2021 18:56

This must be one particular author as it certainly isn't the policy of The Lancet in general:

Recent (published 2021) articles in The Lancet include:

Women and cardiovascular disease: Commission: reducing the global burden by 2030

Women's cardiovascular health: shifting towards equity and justice

Black women in medicine—rising above invisibility

Institutional imperatives for the advancement of women in medicine and science through the COVID-19 pandemic

Women's and children's health in conflict settings: build on existing efforts

Women, children, and adolescents in the post-pandemic world

So no sign of women being generally 'erased'.

Spiindoctor · 25/09/2021 19:50

I don't often say it but hooray for the Telegraph. Didn't hold back in their article.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/09/2021 20:04

@Sonarl

Funny we never hear about the bodies with penises isn't it?
I was thinking ‘wankers with willies’ - I like the alliteration.
KeyboardWorriers · 25/09/2021 20:24

My email here:

Could I please ask you to address the inequality shown in your recent descriptions of males and females.

Either reduce both to the equally ghastly and reductive 'bodies with penises" and "bodies with vaginas"

Or, treat both with equal respect. Males and Females. Men and Women.

I am most disappointed that even scientific journals are pandering now to the Orwellian demands of a vocal few.

Woman: adult, human female.

KeyboardWorriers · 25/09/2021 20:25

@Spiindoctor have you got a link to the telegraph article?
