*filling up at

Violinist64 · 25/09/2021 19:56

@Bunnycat101

I would bet 99% of people aren’t actually panic buying. They’ll be people who has a quarter tank etc that didn’t want to go short, people who knew they’d be worried if they couldn’t get petrol. I can’t condemn people for trying to fill up today. There are some really spiteful posts on here.
Thank you. This is exactly what I did. I had a quarter of a tank left yesterday and needed to take my elderly mother somewhere so, having heard the news, went to our local petrol station and filled up. As I have a fairly small car, it cost just over £35 to fill the tank. This will last for several weeks.
whynotwhatknot · 25/09/2021 19:57

@JesusIsAnyNameFree

I also don't see what the hell the issue would be with people getting a litre or two for their mower. The window of being able to mow is closing, why should people be stuck with shitty looking lawns until March?
yeah shitty lawns

first world problems there

Fordian · 25/09/2021 19:58

Ah. YOU panic buy; I need to fill up.

That's what all this is about, isn't it?

I filled up today. For a personal reason that meant everything for me.

Was 75 miles from home with a gauge that said '71 miles remaining'. Took a 45 minute queue but I now have a full tank. What a selfish c*

Soz, and all. But you wont get your annual surveillance cancer recurrence CT scan unless I can drive 25 miles to perform it. How selfish am I?

Why are we not blaming those who are to blame? Why are we turning on each other? ('Selfish'). Isn't this what they want from us? Why do we not have fuel security in modern Britain? How has this come about?

Aaaand now- new visas for HGV drives to dig us out of this mess- you know, those bloody forriners undercutting our native workforce...

I, actually think we, the British public, need the education the forthcoming thrashing we're about to get- need.

StrongLegs · 25/09/2021 19:58

Will we eventually get to the point where everyone has a full tank of petrol, and then nobody except those who actually use their cars will have space to put any more? I mean presumably at that point, the problem has to slow down.

I haven't been able to drive since I had my first covid vaccine, since it made me permenantly dizzy, so for the poster who said we might lose the ability to drive suddenly - they are right! I can't even cycle at the moment.

teenagetantrums · 25/09/2021 19:58

Apparently there is no fuel in our town. I kind of understand why. Holiday destination loads of holiday parks. I expect everyone that arrived and left on changeover day yesterday filled up worried they couldn't get home.
We have enough for a few days and we can both walk to work if needed
Very glad that our holiday is a week's time as we are driving 3 hours away l expect it will settle down after the weekend

XenoBitch · 25/09/2021 19:59

*yeah shitty lawns

Cutting other people's shitty lawns is what puts food on the table for some.

dearfanny · 25/09/2021 19:59

We have a quarter tank. The roads into our town were blocked by queues of cars

Im leaving it. Not going far next week anyway. Itll have died off next week

Anyone remember a similar situation in the early 00s? Maybr 99 or 2000? It was a strike i think

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/09/2021 20:01

@whynotwhatknot

My friend just sawsomeonthing on fb

someone in her local group posted that she drove round for 2 hours trying to get petrol

erm if youve got enough for 2 hours why did you need petrol

its people like this that is making it all worse

2 hours is one round trip to work for me, unless I get stuck in traffic. Can easily be 3+ then.

I do.

I had to take my DfE certificate into a petrol station to fill up as the petrol station was only giving fuel to emergency service workers and teachers.

Bet I won’t even get that ‘luxury’ now.

Porcupineintherough · 25/09/2021 20:02

Aviation fuel is transported by pipeline not tanker isnt it? It certainly is to Manchester airport.

Doris86 · 25/09/2021 20:02

@Isaidnomorecrisps

I wonder about the airlines - used to work did an oil company and the airports only kept 2-3 days of fuel on site. (Sorry if covered before)
I doubt any of the airlines are panic buying aviation fuel, which is what is causing the shortage with petrol/diesel.
BlueSapphireEyes · 25/09/2021 20:04

I have a hybrid I'm okay Grin

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/09/2021 20:04

@whynotwhatknot

Not that I care what you think, I mean even a teensy tiny bit, but yeah, not mowing is a problem as they get swamped by weeds if they aren't mowed.

I mean I am certain you're fine with your lawn looking like that and I am sure in your area no one bats an eyelid, but in this area it's unacceptable. HTH

HelpNeedCoolUsername8 · 25/09/2021 20:05

Obviously not aimed at you if you have a legitimate need for the fuel. If it’s not relevant to you then no need to take it personally 🤷‍♀️

Is this a serious post?

Mowing a lawn is more important than essential workers getting to work???

Dauphinois · 25/09/2021 20:06

It really pisses me off when people blame the media for this. If people didn't act like twats and drain forecourts dry, there would be no story.

I can't tell if you're serious or just being sarcastic?

Mowing a lawn is work to some people. It is what pays their bills.

All this "keyworker" and "essential" crap can fuck off. Everyone is a small cog in a big machine.

whynotwhatknot · 25/09/2021 20:09

is that a joke

you care more about your garden and what people think than getting to work

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/09/2021 20:10

Not even gonna answer that 😂

But yes, I did get 1.5 litres yesterday. Yes I need it as the gardener is coming at 10 am on Monday and doesn't bring his own. It's a fair arrangement though as he only charges 30 per hour. Or does he not deserve to have an income?

Doris86 · 25/09/2021 20:10

@roxyro

Quite a few of you are totally missing the point. There was/isn’t a shortage but the panic buying, selfish twats have now caused one and yes, the press have a lot to answer for.
Indeed, it’s quite scary how many people don’t seem to realise there is no actual shortage of petrol, and that the situation has been caused by panic buyers.

I guess that’s why we are in this mess.

JaycDeeC · 25/09/2021 20:10

@Zeal

The best option is to only half fill the tank. We never, ever need a full tank. Let me explain.

Whenever I go from A to B, I have noticed they are never at the same height above sea level. Therefore, logically half the journey is going to going down and the other half is going to be going up. When I am going downhill, gravity will allow the car to roll forward and I do not need the engine running to achieve that. When I need to go uphill, I can engage the engine and use that power to drive the car uphill against gravity.

It is that simple. I use the empty top part of the tank to go downhill and the bottom half, which contains the fuel of course, to go uphill. Because I never need to completely fill my tank, my fuel bills are only 50% of what they would otherwise be.

Not sure if this was a joke, but coasting doesn’t really save fuel, that’s a myth, and is considered dangerous driving because you don’t have control of the car. It’s illegal in many countries.
