Noone thinks that they are the problem, that's the problem. I nearly did it myself this morning.

Tank down to 20%, I never fill up at that level, always when the light comes on, or just before, like 10%> I so nearly filled up this morning after shopping, that reactive thought 'best fill up now'. Then the a-ha moment. I didn't fill up.
But clearly at scale people aren't stopping themselves, hence the queues out of both the petrol stations I drove past.
I clearly will regret my approach if I can't get fuel when I really need it 😜

PeachesPumpkin · 25/09/2021 19:37

This is purely a problem as a result of irresponsible media reporting.

peppermintpat · 25/09/2021 19:38

I have three quarters of a tank and need to do 5 commutes next week. I won't have enough and I won't get paid if I don't get there (love new contracts Confused). However, I refuse to panic and join stupid queues and add to the problem.
PS: I used to have an electric car, kicking myself now!!

Jeannie88 · 25/09/2021 19:39

Sheep believing media hype, as usual. I did fill up but only because I was going to anyway as I need to drive to work and kids pick ups etc.

midsomermurderess · 25/09/2021 19:40

From an anthropological point of view I sort of get it. We are driven to find, to hoard, when necessary, resources. I think it's an inbuilt, primate impulse. But we have moved on and can better control our base primate impulse, that, in a way, is a function of society. I just think these are, if you like, slightly more primitive expression of our species. And aren't most of these people madly hunting down petrol men?

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 25/09/2021 19:41

I had to fill up yesterday because I was on red. I queued and was lucky enough to get a full tank before the pumps were closed. I only work part time but driving is a big part of it. I have no idea what I’ll do without use of a car as I cannot carry my deliveries on a bike/bus.

Am I selfish?

Joystir59 · 25/09/2021 19:41

You can't panic buy petrol ffs! You can only fill your tank up. Unless people are filling Jerry cans, which shouldn't be allowed.

OverTheRubicon · 25/09/2021 19:44

You absolutely can. As I said upthread, me and my neighbours drive infrequently and almost always have a public transport option if really needes, yet half the street has been off filling up their tanks.

It's so unhelpful for the many people who have no realistic option but to drive.

Some people fill up jerry cans to run mowers/strimmers.. which might be their source of employment.
Joystir59 · 25/09/2021 19:46

People are allowed to use petrol to run their cars.

Porcupineintherough · 25/09/2021 19:47

Well clearly you can panic buy petrol because there were huge queues by lots of filling stations today and usually there aren't.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/09/2021 19:47

I also don't see what the hell the issue would be with people getting a litre or two for their mower. The window of being able to mow is closing, why should people be stuck with shitty looking lawns until March?

Joystir59 · 25/09/2021 19:47

Yes, of course, some people need to take fuel home to run machinery.

NotwatchingSpooks · 25/09/2021 19:48

Ratched I hope you can get some tomorrow Flowers

Cocomarine · 25/09/2021 19:48

@1Dandelion1

When I started driving my father taught me to aim to fill up at 1/2 tank and never go below 1/4 tank, I have practiced this for years. Luckily I filled up last weekend so I'll be ok for a few weeks (longer if I WFH) but I feel for people like my friend who's worrying and I'll lend her my car if she needs it.
That’s kind of you to help your friend. Please do be aware though, that plenty of people would like to never go below 1/4 tank and not usually below a 1/2, but when they hit the 1/2 five days before payday, they done have a lot of choice. Being organised in that way is sometimes a privilege of wealth rather than better planning.
Joystir59 · 25/09/2021 19:48

This situation will soon settle down once everyone has filled up.

Akire · 25/09/2021 19:49

It be all over in next day or so same as last time. Everyone who’s squeezed in extra bit will be full and only those who normally fill up will be going in and magically all back to normal. Same as when everyone stopped buying 48 toilet rolls enough go round.

motherrunner · 25/09/2021 19:49

Well if I can’t buy petrol tomorrow then I won’t be going to work Monday and a cover supervisor will have to ‘teach’ my classes until I can.

XingMing · 25/09/2021 19:50

Locally someone went out early to fill up before the queues started and met the bowser driver who said" there's no shortage of fuel in the system, only morons panic buying" . The panic buyers are creating an artificial shortage but once they've all topped up, supplies will become more normal.

DoucheCanoe · 25/09/2021 19:51

I filled up on diesel yesterday.

Admittedly I would normally have waited until next week as I fill it on payday but I need it for work/school run/shopping so used some savings which will be replaced.

The problem is (and yes, right now I'm one of them) that when the media whip up a frenzy it's a case of every person for themselves. Humans are selfish creatures by nature.

Eggshausted · 25/09/2021 19:51

Well done. There will be 10k that will read this and think. ‘Oh I’d better go and fill my tank to the brim. You’re as bad as the media, hyping everyone up.
Recreational Indignation. It’s the pandemic Olympic sport. It’s why I came off Facebook, and it’s getting just as bad on here! If it’s not people getting up in arms about people buying toilet rolls, yeast, Flour, petrol, people not wearing masks.
Getting uptight about other people won’t change the situation.

Chill.
Getting indignant

I wonder about the airlines - used to work did an oil company and the airports only kept 2-3 days of fuel on site.
(Sorry if covered before)

whynotwhatknot · 25/09/2021 19:55

My friend just sawsomeonthing on fb

someone in her local group posted that she drove round for 2 hours trying to get petrol

erm if youve got enough for 2 hours why did you need petrol

its people like this that is making it all worse

MintJulia · 25/09/2021 19:55

For myself, I have a combination of wfh, a bike and my own feet.Smile

Leaving what's left in the tank to get ds 7 miles to the school bus stop and back next week. We'll cope somehow.

Airlines are not filling up their local Tesco garage.
