Ok so if you really believe there is a shortage so you panic and go and fill up today even though you have half a tank because you have to get to work . If there is a shortage then you are going to run out eventually and then what keep up with this ridiculous charade? . Or maybe don’t go and get fuel unless you need it save yourself some stress and you’ll find there is no shortage. it was a couple of petrol stations running out due to let down by staff shortage? the media got hold of it then panic.
So maybe do yourself a favour and think if by this time next week there isn’t any fuel in any petrol station then I’ll say I’m wrong but I doubt I will be.

RussianSpy101 · 25/09/2021 08:32

Filled up this morning! No problems. Queues started as I was leaving.

ninnynonny · 25/09/2021 08:35

Still waiting for the 4 plus cars, kids at university hoarders to explain...

Mamamia7962 · 25/09/2021 08:36

The reason there is a shortage now is because loads of people panicked yesterday and went and queued up for petrol. This wouldn't normally happen, but the media turned it into a sensationalist story. If people had just carried on as normal we wouldn't be in this situation.

OhWhyNot · 25/09/2021 08:40

It’s not a couple of stations

That’s just those I past yesterday close to where I live

It’s many stations and if they were filled they will soon run out again

I’m not filling up my car one I need to drive round find a station that has petrol then sit in traffic to maybe not be able to get petrol. I hope by mid week things are better

We are staggering our staff but we have to have a certain amount of staff in

It’s a fucking headache

dementedma · 25/09/2021 08:41

@rhubarbsoup ..panic buying happening here in Scotland too

Cbd333 · 25/09/2021 08:45

I queued two hours with my 10 week old DD
to try and leave the supermarket yesterday because of gridlock caused by petrol station queues and couldn't even back out of my parking space. Eventually had to abandon it and walk nearly five miles home with her alone busy roads and near a carriageway.

Imnothereforthedrama · 25/09/2021 08:50

Exactly!
Proudboomer · 25/09/2021 08:52

Filed up this morning. I usually fill up on a Friday when I get paid but couldn’t face the queues yesterday.
I have two local petrol stations that I use regularly. The first one is on a busy main road and had long queues this yesterday and this morning. The other is on a less busy road. It still had queues and no diesel but I only had a 10 minute wait for E5.
A friend who works at the local Asda which has a self service petrol station told me last night that had to turn around 70 cars away as nothing left. For the whole day the entrance to the store car park was blocked by car’s queuing for the petrol and a members of staff were being abused for trying to organise them.
The Great Britain’s public are once again showing what arseholes they can be.

tigger1001 · 25/09/2021 08:54

@OhWhyNot

LetterFox it would have to cover some keyworkers

Not being about to drive to a friends isn’t essential (have cancelled my plans for tomorrow)

Certain staff absolutely have to get into work and need their car to do that

Some workers it’s more essential they are able to get into work than others

I've never understood that argument.

For the vast majority of workers it is essential that they get to work (if not working from home) as otherwise they don't get paid. Don't get paid, can't put food on the table/roof over your head. Possibly even lose your job if you don't go in.

Most workers are essential workers to their families.

eeyore228 · 25/09/2021 09:01

So BP struggled with a few stations. Next minute the petrol stations are rammed with people panicking. The cause of the shortage is this, too many people went mental. There are never normally queues like these, it was utterly ridiculous and all it's done is leave others without and force up the price for all. All we had to do was buy what was needed.

lollipoprainbow · 25/09/2021 09:03

I'm sure there are those that genuinely need petrol but you can guarantee that there will be people queuing like sheep because everyone else is. The end of my road was gridlocked last night with queues going into my small local petrol station (one they has very few customers usually!). Why are the police allowing roads to be blocked like this because of peoples stupid mentality ??

MakingM · 25/09/2021 09:05

I wish people would calm down and stop creating problems needlessly.

In almost 30 years of driving, I’ve not had an accident yet. Thankfully.

Yesterday, as I was overtaking the queue into the petrol station, the people in front clearly realised they were passing a petrol station late and slammed their brakes on, mounting the kerb to just literally stop and stare at the petrol station. They’d already passed the entrance! As I tried to pull around them, another car was coming onto our side of the road from the opposite direction, to do what I’m not sure because they clearly couldn’t turn into the petrol station, but they did block the entire road. I had to do an emergency stop…as did everyone behind me.

What is the matter with people?

Why do I suspect that that people who were frothing at the mouth about foreigners and panic buying toilet roll are now the people frothing at the mouth about shortages in supermarkets and petrol stations caused by a lack of foreign lorry drivers? They need to calm down. It’s not the apocalypse. Their anxiety and hysteria IS the problem.

God help us all when they’re told to stop using their cars so much which seems inevitable. They’ll completely lose their minds.

OhWhyNot · 25/09/2021 09:06

But many can work from home

We know this from the past 18 months less now but still a large number can

worriedatthemoment · 25/09/2021 09:08

@WindowsSmindows bought what you normally would and filled up again when you normally would
If you normally fill your tank then not panic buying if you normally put in £20 then fill again in 2 weeks then yes thats panic buying

MissPeregrine · 25/09/2021 09:09

I have a 35 mile round trip for work, 5 days a week and currently thankful I did genuinely need fuel on Wednesday, as yesterday fb was full of posts about the crazy waiting times at a couple of the local petrol stations.

Only a small engine in my little car so £25/£30 will last me a week, just.

Hopeful that this madness will have settled down by next week.

Dragon50 · 25/09/2021 09:09

I’m not surprised by this.

We knew we had a HGV and supply issue. It was only a matter of time before petrol deliveries were slowed too, my 3 local stations (London) have had reduced petrol for weeks.

I rely on my car so started topping up at 1/2 tank since Jan.

Lockdown helped slow usage but this week may have had reductions even without media hype:

  • many returned to work/school early sept
  • tanks filled early sept replenished
  • students going back
  • good weather this w/end
  • last fri of month normally sees slightly longer queues anyway

I’m not saying this definitely would have happened, but that yest/this weekend would have had a spike in sales anyway.

dayswithaY · 25/09/2021 09:11

Newspapers are on their last legs, their readership is dying out and so they are grabbing anything they can to make a story. The panic buying then makes another story and so on.

Expect more of the same, culminating in "no turkeys for Christmas" which is the next "news" item looming on the horizon.

Biker47 · 25/09/2021 09:11

I think people can do without mowing their flippin lawns when there is a shortage of petrol. Or borrow an electric mower if it must absolutely be done.

I think people who make a living from mowing other people's lawns would disagree with you.

Dillyjones72 · 25/09/2021 09:11

The queues at our local station are causing massive traffic jams. People are idiots.

worriedatthemoment · 25/09/2021 09:12

I was at the petrol station yesterday as its pay day and i normally put in £30 , so i put in £30 others were filling up , some even had gerry cans on the tv , thats not buying what you need
When im at the petrol station normally at this time very few are filling their tanks
I know people who have done this who drive about 30 miles a week, there was someone on here yesterday who filled ip and sad it would last them months
So if everyone just bought their normal amount their would be no issues
Some stations here have capped the amount and they should all do that for next few weeks and no gerry cans allowed

CombatBarbie · 25/09/2021 09:12

When we had similar last time round I remember petrol stations having attendants and only putting in say £20 fuel. I had to show my ID card to get a full tank as I was returning back to camp from leave at the opposite end of the country.

Dillyjones72 · 25/09/2021 09:12

‘ I think people can do without mowing their flippin lawns when there is a shortage of petrol. Or borrow an electric mower if it must absolutely be done.

Ah of course, yes. The million of people who work mowing lawns with petrol mowers. Forgot about them…

wendz86 · 25/09/2021 09:14

I had to take my daughter to urgent care last night and was so glad i had about 70 miles left in my tank. On the way back at 2.30am people were still queuing at stations. Apparently still chaos this morning.

CombatBarbie · 25/09/2021 09:15

@dayswithaY the turkey 🦃 thing has already been in the media as there's apparently no drivers to transport them. We have a turkey farm in our village and he's already panicking that he's going to be left with 100s of live turkeys.
