Very angry at the media causing this panic, this time two days ago it wouldn’t have occurred to anyone. We are rural about 8 miles from nearest shop and the train station so it is a bit worrying. DH will need to see if he can work from home again next week as we only have enough petrol for a couple of trips which we will need to save.

Twentypast · 25/09/2021 07:34

Not exclusively. I am listening to the radio right now. They're interviewing the boss of a haulage firm. He's blaming the DVLA for closing due to covid and causing delays to HGV licensing. He said he has over a dozen drivers waiting for their tests to come through.

Twentypast · 25/09/2021 07:34

That was meant to quote @PeriChristmas

speakout · 25/09/2021 07:36

I think the media have been keeping quite a lid on things.
Shortages were happening before people started panic buying.
It's so easy to blame ordinary people for very real problems caused by the government.
Look at the food shortages right now all my local supermarkets are half empty- I see no one panic buying.

UnsuitableHat · 25/09/2021 07:37

Bit hard to define ‘panic buying’ in relation to petrol though, as you can’t get more than a tank- it’s not like getting a year’s supply of loo rolls or something. I guess if there appears to be a problem (maybe whipped up by media) and people need their cars for work etc, they’ll fill up when they can. If there isn’t a problem, and some people are just overreacting, it’ll calm down quickly and be fine.

Yes and he needs new drivers due to the fact that the European guys had to leave! 🙄
@Berkeys
That's nice. Nice bit of stealth bragging there then.
Because oh yes, we all should have been as clever as you and bought an electric vehicle so we too could be smug...
Oh wait, many of us couldn't hope to be able to afford one...
Or able to get a charging port at home.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/09/2021 07:48

@OhWhyNot

so who decides who Needs petrol?

OhWhyNot · 25/09/2021 07:50

LetterFox it would have to cover some keyworkers

Not being about to drive to a friends isn’t essential (have cancelled my plans for tomorrow)

Certain staff absolutely have to get into work and need their car to do that

Some workers it’s more essential they are able to get into work than others

MarshaBradyo · 25/09/2021 07:55

Bit crazy here as cars queuing blocking traffic

Not good at all

Imnothereforthedrama · 25/09/2021 07:56

How many times THERE IS NO PETROL SHORTAGE now stop panicking and wasting ridiculous amounts of times queuing for petrol and arguing about who deserves fuel ffs .

OhWhyNot · 25/09/2021 08:02

There is a petrol shortage if people can’t get petrol so they can’t get to work

What do you suggest they drive around until they find a petrol station that has patrol

Horst · 25/09/2021 08:07

If you limit to key works only you wouldn’t stop the problem. As seen by schools how many people got classes as key workers in the second lock down.

Every warehouse staff member that happens to supply anything food or drink related in a key worker, then the staff that might not actually be involved directly picking and packing it but the office admins they are too then classed as key workers. The same goes for the like of B&m and home bargains they sell food and drinks so all key workers.

Basically anyone who can’t work from home is highly likely a key worker technically.

No there isn’t only because every man and his dog went to petrol starting yesterday so 5 times the people turned up . They are getting delivery’s so stop adding to the problem unless you need petrol today and can wait don’t go and get any .
Biker47 · 25/09/2021 08:14

Some at a petrol station near me actually filled up with over £100 worth of petrol I mean come on.

It costs me about £75 to fill up from nearly empty, whenever I go for petrol I always fill it up, whether nearly empty or only half way. In the current climate am I supposed to only put £10 in? Sod that.

OhWhyNot · 25/09/2021 08:17

I haven’t been to a petrol station since Tuesday

I have had a few days off

We are changing our rota last minute because staff can’t get in and I’m planning my week at the moment I have enough for two days

I walked passed three patrol stations yesterday two had huge queues (causing traffic but some of they pumps had run out one had no petrol.

In contact with colleagues and they have been trying to get petrol so they can get to work

We absolutely have to be staffed there is no well we can work from home

So yes having been up from 630 (on day off) trying to manage this and having to think about myself getting in we are staffed i am worried

skodadoda · 25/09/2021 08:18

@AlandAnna

It’s the media. We are just sheep.
So you think news should be suppressed? How can people hold this incompetent government to account if they don’t have information?
Islamorada · 25/09/2021 08:18

They are not very clever. This would make the situation worse.

Dreamstate · 25/09/2021 08:18

Lol what utter mugs people are and its been so evident since covidld happen

Media spina story of BP having problems into a panic buying story

Same with food, a few empty shelves somewhere and suddenly we are going to run out of food

All the doom and gloom Xmas is going to be crap buy everything now whilst you still can

I mean christ if one shelf in tesco is empty there are still alternatives.

Spoilt by so much choice and next day delivery anything less than that is now a reason to panic

Bp had a problem, and now people panic buying will cause other places to have shortages you couldn't make it up really

Rhubarbsoup · 25/09/2021 08:19

For everyone genuinely low on petrol or wanting to top their tanks up to make sure they have enough for work next week etc is no doubt a few who have filled up to have their cars sat on their driveway. How boring and predictable are the British public (caveat, I know Wales was in on the panic buying not sure about Scotland, apologies if people are more reasonable there).

RedToothBrush · 25/09/2021 08:21

@Imnothereforthedrama

Except there are lots of people struggling to get to work because they have no petrol and there's no petrol left. So there is a supply and demand problem - also known as a shortage.

Its not caused by there being insufficient fuel in the country - an actual shortage of goods. But the fuel isn't where it needs to be so there is a shortage on forecourts.

So its a supply chain shock shortage, but its a shortage nonetheless.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/09/2021 08:24

i think i have heard they are talking about limiting everyone to £30
which seems very sensible indeed!

3luckystars · 25/09/2021 08:24

Electric cars are very expensive.

Ylvamoon · 25/09/2021 08:28

It's great isn't it? I mean the fat cats getting even fatter.

I filled my car up as it was empty a few days ago at £1.30... I have to drive past 2 petrol stations to go about my business It was £1.45 & £1.56 last night.
I really believe this is just a way to sell at inflated prices to keep the companies profits up. Not much petrol was sold during Lockdown and many people still work from home... 🤔

whenwillthemadnessend · 25/09/2021 08:28

Anyone been today? My car has 65 miles left.
Seems a lot but we live rurally and that will only last till weds and I have to work 25 miles away on weds .

I'm sure it will be ok by then. 🤞
