I've finally seen my new leccy bill. If i had electric car, I wouldn't really be laughing either.

Our electricity bill is still way cheaper than our petrol and diesel costs used to be, massively so. We have two electric cars. My little one costs less than £3 to fully charge up at home.

And so far, no queues or delays to use the public ones - prices haven't risen their either, and the ones at our local shopping centre, albeit the slow chargers, are still free to use.

worriedatthemoment · 25/09/2021 09:21

@linelgreen but thats is panic buying you will have cars sat with fuel , there will be fuel again in a few days we haven't run out
How long does you car run on a full tank? How long does it last you if 2 weeks then no need to do what you have done
There may be no fuel in some stations every couple of days of people had just bought a normal amount
My dh can't drive at the moment so his car is out the front , I haven't gone and filled it just incase , I put my normal £30 payday fuel in which will last me 10 days or so and will top up as and when

worriedatthemoment · 25/09/2021 09:22

@kungfupannda is that the brand that is having issues as its bp and someone else who has a slight shortage

RedToothBrush · 25/09/2021 09:24
@dayswithaY the turkey 🦃 thing has already been in the media as there's apparently no drivers to transport them. We have a turkey farm in our village and he's already panicking that he's going to be left with 100s of live turkeys.
There is no one to slaughter them. There is no CO2 to slaughter them. And there is no one to transport them.

All three things have been well publicised.

Poor bloke.

OhWhyNot · 25/09/2021 09:25

Why is the Tesco garage then empty of petrol and the the Sainsbury’s

Isn’t there deliveries impacted or just through so many panic buying

worriedatthemoment · 25/09/2021 09:25

@kungfupannda and yes people can panic buy if someone normally puts a £10 in and then today they have filled up with what would potentially be a month or twos worth of petrol then that is panic buying , x that by 20/30 per station then it happens the pumps only hold so much
One poster on here has said they filled both their cars and their kids cars who are away at uni - so lot more bought than usual, it only takes a few and then knock on effect
On news lots of pictures of people filling gerry cans - that should be banned unless its actually a beeakdown

Xenia · 25/09/2021 09:26

Mine is low and I got up early to get some but petrol station 1 - queues down to the round about and it was not even clear they had any so I turned around, no. 2 queues right back to the round about so I turned around and no. 3 no queues all so I drove in but signs al over that they had nothing.

If it is going to take several trips like that to 3 stations to fill it up I will have run out of petrol before I can get some. I will have to walk with a can I suppose in due course to get enough to fill it up to drive to a petrol station when and if there is petrol or there are no queues. Reminds me of the 1970s. I still have my parents' oil lamps from those days of power cuts, the 3 day week. 60% inflation over 3 years, 99% upper tax rate.

Greenhand · 25/09/2021 09:27

One garage has fuel within a 25 mile radius of me and the queues were over half a mile long at 8am.
I was out on the road at 6am and there was fuel about 30 miles away - I didn't stop as I can limp through to mid week. If it's this bad mid week then things will start grinding to a halt anyway - such as schools (teachers can't get in), food supplies in shops (lorries need diesel), no taxis etc etc

Our local bus to Asda has been cancelled due to the petrol queues why the fuck aren't the police out there doing something ?????

Fuck all I expect, as usual!
userxx · 25/09/2021 09:31

I've got 20 miles left, went to my local Asda petrol station last night but turned around as the queue was down the road. Am pretty certain the majority of the cars really didn't need to be filing up, they are the same ones with 45 toilet rolls stashed at home. Utter bellends.

moynomore · 25/09/2021 09:36

I don't understand how you can panic buy petrol? My assumption is that these people are tying to make sure they have enough fuel to get to work on Monday. Not panic buying and sorting it in the garages.

See the person upthread who has filled up her and her husband’s cars, AND the unused cars of her absent adult children so that if she and her husband run out they have those cars as well just in case?

Panic buying means people who have enough petrol to last them for some time but feel the need to top up the spare 5l in their tank which obviously clogs up the pumps for drivers who need it for that day or the next day

If it was normal buying there would be queues like this all the time. As there aren't by definition people are acting abnormally

MrsWhites · 25/09/2021 09:42

The 2 petrol stations near to us have sold out of petrol and diesel after yesterday’s massive queues. I can’t say I blame people for worrying about running out though, people have had a really shit year, some suffering huge financial difficulties, the press is full of reports of the winter of discontent- people are worrying about being able to pay their bills this winter, the last thing they want is to not be able to get to work and risk not getting paid in some cases!

I have just been to fill my car - it was on the red and it cost over £50 to fill it.

Lots of people were "splashing and dashing". Sticking in a £5 or £10 to keep their fuel topped up to the max.

THAT is unnecessary panic buying and causes queues and shortages.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 25/09/2021 09:43

Oh and there was an Asda branded tanker replenishing stocks when I was at the supermarket. No need to panic.

tigger1001 · 25/09/2021 09:43

@OhWhyNot

But many can work from home

We know this from the past 18 months less now but still a large number can

Only if their employer lets them.

But doesn't negate the fact many cannot work from home. If you can't work from home then if you don't get there you won't get paid.

MakingM · 25/09/2021 09:44

If they are blocking the road, the police could just take a stroll down the queue and politely suggest those who have more than half a tank already might return later so the road can be kept clear.

I’m not sure what else they can do tbh, blocking the road like a *** and waiting to buy petrol you don’t need aren’t crimes, they’re just a nuisance.

We need petrol for two long journeys this weekend. I'm really concerned we aren't going to be able to get it. We have tickets for an expensive attraction then supposed to see family we haven't seen in months now Sunday, so I have sent dh out to fill up the car, but no luck so far. I hope the people with the full cars ready to sit on their driveways are happy with themselves“

Not exactly crucial, is it. What makes you different?

tigger1001 · 25/09/2021 09:46

"Lots of people were "splashing and dashing". Sticking in a £5 or £10 to keep their fuel topped up to the max. "

How do you know that though? Maybe they were only putting in what they needed for their journeys.

At this point in the month, I often put in 10/15 just so I can get to work, then fill up to the top on payday.

I will be putting in £10 at some point this week (Monday I hope) to last me until payday

OhWhyNot · 25/09/2021 09:51

I am well aware of that we are very dependent on bank staff ourselves have worked as bank myself

And I think most employers would allow people to work from home if they needed to to keep productivity ticking over rather thank not pay them

Some areas of work simply can’t be done from home

This issues was also a concern at the beginning of lockdown we were advised to carry our nhs cards as it was though petrol would be rationed (it didn’t happen)

We need to fill up this weekend as we are going on a holiday! No it’s not exactly crucial but we have worked our asses off this year and suffered 3 bereavements. We need a holiday! Stop being an arse.

If you’re buying it because you believe it to be in short supply then you are panic buying it. Whether that’s because you are low and need to get to work on Monday and believe it will have run out before then, or you are filling up 4 cars to sit on the drive ‘just in case’ it’s all panic buying. If your decision to fill up is purely on the basis that you are low on fuel and need to get some, then that isn’t panic buying.
