lots of people are going to find out they don't "need" a car after all

Annoyedanddissapointed · 24/09/2021 19:24

I am pretty sure I see box of grass seed in the booth of that car😁

Brefugee · 24/09/2021 19:25

I saw mostly retired people queuing. They had the time and were plain selfish and greedy.

just when i think a whole thread might go by without the MN ageist shit and BAM! there is is.

Are you now going to come back and say you know each and everyone of the selfish gits personally?

BananaPB · 24/09/2021 19:25

@gluteustothemaximus

A 3 mile taxi won't cost more than a fiver. If you can afford petrol you can afford a taxi.

£15 a mile here. The meter starts before you even get in. Where are you, that a 3 mile journey in a taxi costs a fiver????

I live in Buckinghamshire Just googled and my local taxi company is £3.70 for the first mile then £1.10 per additional mile (4 passengers)
Djifunrsn · 24/09/2021 19:26

Retired people often need to drive to loads of hospital appointments.

Pollythecat15 · 24/09/2021 19:27

There is always something new. If it's not one thing it is something else. Day after day after day. Weeks, months go by with new added shit to piss down on the horrors of life that already exist.
We all have our own individual personal struggles without this adding to the mix. I am on the verge of giving up completely.
I'm not just having a moan - I'm currently grieving.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 24/09/2021 19:27

I really want to know a company that charges £25 a mile and still has business 😱

3 miles would be £7 in mine approx

Annoyedanddissapointed · 24/09/2021 19:28

15 not 25

ChamberofSecrets69 · 24/09/2021 19:28

@Unanananana

I fill up every other Friday. I went and filled up today as normal. Yes, I queued for a bit. No biggie.

The problem is, you can't tell the difference between me and a panic buyer, so does that make me 'fucking selfish' too? My money is as good as anyone elses.

I don't blame people filling up. You snooze, you lose. I'm not normally so bloody minded, but right now, its everyone for themselves.

@Unanananana

^people like this are a huge part of the reason I despise humanity 😑😑

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/09/2021 19:28

@Zeal

The best option is to only half fill the tank. We never, ever need a full tank. Let me explain.

Whenever I go from A to B, I have noticed they are never at the same height above sea level. Therefore, logically half the journey is going to going down and the other half is going to be going up. When I am going downhill, gravity will allow the car to roll forward and I do not need the engine running to achieve that. When I need to go uphill, I can engage the engine and use that power to drive the car uphill against gravity.

It is that simple. I use the empty top part of the tank to go downhill and the bottom half, which contains the fuel of course, to go uphill. Because I never need to completely fill my tank, my fuel bills are only 50% of what they would otherwise be.

😂😂😂
the80sweregreat · 24/09/2021 19:30

My dh needed petrol for his motorbike today otherwise no work.
It was running on fumes!!

AlexaShutUp · 24/09/2021 19:31

YANBU. I had to buy petrol today because my tank was literally empty. Couldn't get any this morning on the way to work so decided to try again this evening on the way home. Had to go to five different garages before I could find anything. The warning light was already on at the start of my 10 mile journey home and according to my car, I had another 3 miles to go before I conked out completely. The queues at all of the petrol stations were insane. I'm sure that there were others like me who genuinely needed fuel, but I'll bet there were plenty more panic buying when they didn't really need it.

YouokHun · 24/09/2021 19:33

@Devonchills

Nobody ever admits to panic buying though do they, like the pp said, it's all the people topping up just incase. Luckily we filled up the car 2 days ago, so shouldn't need fuel for ages. Filling up the Jerry cans or whatever they are called should be banned though.
Luckily you filled up two days ago! Unluckily I had to fill up a Jerry can today as my DD ran out of petrol (just passed her test and misjudged it) and we needed to move her car out of other people’s way. You’ll be pleased to hear I got called a selfish cunt for filling a small Jerry can by the woman behind me in the queue so others are obviously in agreement with you. The women filled up her mammoth Range Rover so quickly that I can only assume she was topping up the level from practically full to very full. As she pulled off the forecourt she scraped her car on a concrete bollardy thing which was pleasing (no one was hurt)
DoubleTweenQueen · 24/09/2021 19:34

I drove a round trip between Cambridge & Stevenage this afternoon and there were queues at every fuel station we went past. Couldn’t get into Sainsbury’s to get food for dinner because the queues into their fuel station, from both directions, were blocking the entrance and spilling out onto a busy junction.

I understand people getting nervous and not wanting to be caught out, and I don’t begrudge them wanting to fill up, but this is going to cause the problem that didn’t really exist before, or at least was being managed ok.

toconclude · 24/09/2021 19:34

@Autumngoldleaf
Yes roll on the day many of us will be completely locked out of car ownership because we have nowhere to charge an electric car. Won't that be great? 🙄🙄🙄

whynotwhatknot · 24/09/2021 19:34

i guess everyone has a right to think they deserve to fill up before others

including the poster on here who has jsut filled up four of their cars (just incase)

AlexaShutUp · 24/09/2021 19:35

I was actually panicking earlier that they might ban people filling up jerry cans and I was wondering what I would do if I ran out of fuel before I could get my car to a garage that actually had any.

I wish they would do some sort of check on the car petrol gauge and give priority to people who genuinely need to fill up.

AGreenerShadeofKale · 24/09/2021 19:36

And they show queues on the news again.
Media led panic. 🤷

DoubleTweenQueen · 24/09/2021 19:37

@YouokHun To be fair, that Range likely needs refuelling every other day. Be kind :D

whynotwhatknot · 24/09/2021 19:37

Just ridiculous our media started al this about loo roll last year

MysteriousMonkey · 24/09/2021 19:38

@Notthemessiah

What do they expect? If some petrol stations are closed and others have run out of one type of fuel, people are going to be concerned and are going to fill up a bit earlier than they might otherwise.

Running out of fuel is not an option for most people, so people won't risk it, especially when they know that as soon as the powers that be say 'Don't panic buy, there isn't a problem' everyone runs out and panic buys.

They aren't selfish arseholes - they need fuel in their cars and they know human nature.

I think this is exactly right. I filled up today, my light was on, usually I leave it til flashing but it's have been fucked if I couldn't get any tomorrowConfused
Bunnycat101 · 24/09/2021 19:38

I would bet 99% of people aren’t actually panic buying. They’ll be people who has a quarter tank etc that didn’t want to go short, people who knew they’d be worried if they couldn’t get petrol. I can’t condemn people for trying to fill up today. There are some really spiteful posts on here.

the80sweregreat · 24/09/2021 19:38

@whynotwhatknot

Just ridiculous our media started al this about loo roll last year
Yeah, that was shit ..
XenoBitch · 24/09/2021 19:39

@colouringindoors

100% I am f*cking furious. Queues at every garage within miles, my town has now run out. We have to drive ds to school and genuinely do not know if that's going to even be possible!

I am so sick of the selfishness of some - or actually, lots - of people..Do they not want their doctors, nurses, vets etc to be able to get to work?!!!!

How do you know what people are using their cars for?

Honestly, half the comments on this thread remind me of the lockdown days when people were complaining about the amount of people in their local park.... when they were there themselves.

Shitfuckcommaetc · 24/09/2021 19:40

@Nomoreusernames1244

*Or 3.5 mile walk. So I'll have to be up at 4am. Brilliant We'll probably be short staffed, as I know alot of people live further out than me*

I live 3.5 miles from work. Takes me 20 mins on a bike.

OK? Not sure how that helps my current situation.

But well done you.

Not that I should have to explain, but on a weekday I drop my kids at school (primary) half mile in the opposite direction, then have 20 minutes to get to work and park. It's cutting it very fine. No way would I make it cycling.
