Do I need to get my ex’s opinion on a name?

I'm pregnant and due in December, me and my ex split up in July as he cheated, since then he hasn't once asked how me or baby are but has said he wants to be in his life.

I have a list of names that I like, and I'm leaning towards it, but I'm just wondering if I'll need my ex’s opinion? Baby will also be taking my last name.

OP posts:
DressBitch · 21/09/2021 09:06

Nah. Fuck him.

ManifestDestinee · 21/09/2021 09:06

No, why would you?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/09/2021 09:08

No. Simply message him after the baby arrives/is registered and say "the baby is here, their name is X. I'll get in touch in a couple of weeks and we can sort a visit for you to meet him/her"

WoozySnoozy · 21/09/2021 09:08

No I don't see why you would need is input on the fun things when he hasn't shown any interest in the scans etx

ScaredOfDinosaurs · 21/09/2021 09:08

Hell no. He played shitty games, he wins shitty prizes.

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 21/09/2021 09:08

You don't have to but if you wanted to maybe narrow it down to a few names you absolutely love and would be happy to have any and ask if he has a preference.
If he doesn't want any of those names then tough shit

GreekTragedy · 21/09/2021 09:09

Good grief no. You're going to have at least 18 years of making decisions alone.
Good luck OP and enjoy your pregnancy.

DemBonesDemBones · 21/09/2021 09:11

I wouldn't consider asking for his input on the name.

RoseGoldGlasses · 21/09/2021 09:13

Nope

RevolvingPivot · 21/09/2021 09:13

Totally off point. I'm curious.

Do you have to have an ex at the birth?? I mean I know morally people may or may not but how about legally do you have to let them know?

My dh wasn't but not by choice.

Brollywasntneededafterall · 21/09/2021 09:15

Given he is an ex for likely good reason do you want to be using a name he had any say in??

CannaeRemember · 21/09/2021 09:15

Pick whatever name you want, never mind your cheating ex.

QueenAdreena · 21/09/2021 09:17

@RevolvingPivot no, you don’t. You don’t even have to have a current partner there if you don’t want them to be.

Thanks

ajandjjmum · 21/09/2021 09:18

Don't set a precedent or he will expect to be consulted on all decisions concerning your baby.

Theunamedcat · 21/09/2021 09:20

Has he communicated with you at all or just ghosted

Blossomtoes · 21/09/2021 09:21

Nope. His opinion is completely irrelevant.

AdaColeman · 21/09/2021 09:24

No, you can choose the baby’s name all by yourself.
Don’t put Ex on the birth certificate either.

PumpkinKlNG · 21/09/2021 09:24

I didn’t ask my exes opinion of my child’s name in fact he didn’t know her name for the first few months. (He didn’t contact me so. 🤷‍♀️)

PumpkinKlNG · 21/09/2021 09:25

Of course no one has a right to be at the birth.

PurpleEchoLamp · 21/09/2021 09:27

You don't need to put his surname on the birth certificate either.

PurpleEchoLamp · 21/09/2021 09:28

Oops, sorry, just read your last sentence OP!

Reduceddutiesboredom · 21/09/2021 09:31

Because fuck dads right? Fuck a child’s right to know who their parents are.

Terrible advise.

If OP is in the situation where she needs to get child maintenance she’ll have zero change getting money from someone who isn’t on the birth certificate.

OP - I’d always suggest being as amicable as possible with the other parent, but given that he hasn’t shown much interest during pregnancy I’d either pick a name yourself or say to him “I like this, this, or this” and see if he has a preference. Hopefully once baby arrives he steps up.

Ponoka7 · 21/09/2021 09:32

I think that you should tell him the name before you register, if he is genuinely wanting to be an involved dad. Regardless of randoms opinions. When asked by your teen why xyz didn't happen, if you are happy with the answers that you will give and your intentions, then proceed.

PumpkinKlNG · 21/09/2021 09:35

You CAN get cm without the person on the birth certificate so that is false. Reduceddutiesboredom
