Light-hearted disagreement between DH and me!

He says soup is not a meal; it's a starter. I think it can be either and definitely a meal when you include a sandwich.

Depends on the size of the spud and no to salad Grin

tattymacduff · 02/09/2021 17:55

Agree with EmmalineC that Decent homemade soup with fresh bread is fine for dinner. Minestrone is a good dinner soup too, as you don't even need bread with it!

Shop bought soups are generally horrible IMHO.

Moonshine5 · 02/09/2021 17:55

Seinfeld "the Soup" series 6 episode 7. The main theme is this exact question - highly recommend, worth a watch!

transylvanianbunny · 02/09/2021 17:55

@EmmalinaC,

Would you mind elaborating on the above soups? Sound fab!

WomanStanleyWoman · 02/09/2021 17:56

But surprised that so many people say soup is OK for lunch but not dinner. What is the reasoning here?

Because the majority of people prefer a lighter lunch and a larger evening meal?

onlychildhamster · 02/09/2021 17:56

It's lunch or dinner for me. But I am very petite.

OhWhyNot · 02/09/2021 17:56

Depends

A blended soup no (it’s just slop)

A nice hearty vegetable and lentil soup with fresh cut bread (of course lots of butter) then yes

speakout · 02/09/2021 17:57

If you need to add a sandwich then it isn't a meal.
As much as I love daal, it isn't a meal either- I would need a vegetable side dish/rice or breads etc.
Soup and a sandwich is a fine lunch, but an emergency dinner.

If you take soup up a level then it does qualify as dinner- but then becomes a casserole- but only qualifies as a complete meal with lots of beans/meat, potatoes or dumplings.

RickJames · 02/09/2021 17:57

Oh, you've got me going. Just yesterday I presented home made soup, crusty bread and cheese plus homemade home grown apples, apple crumble as a dinner and was told that wasn't enough. Cos there was no dead animal involved.

I can't even describe how foul my language was. My DH sits at a desk, chortling all day being Mr Manager, and yet I'm supposed to feed him like he's a starving navi. Fuck off. Fuck off. Fuck off....

Learn to cook you aresehole, learn to flipping cook.

Soup is fine.

Funnily enough he has been very meek today.

As you were....

Then that's not "soup" being a meal isn't it. That's "soup and a sandwich".

Soup by itself, or maybe with a bread roll, is a supper or light lunch at best.

loopylindi · 02/09/2021 17:58

If you make soup with loads of veg, some protein like chicken or shredded whatever, add lovely bread what's so different to a meal on a plate.... ah yes - the liquid. Well in fact this kind of MEAL will fill you for longer than the 'on a plate' variety. In addition you might even get more veg into 'veg-phobic' children

LST · 02/09/2021 17:58

We have it for our tea all the time. With crusty bread and lurpak.

FrozenCremeEgg · 02/09/2021 17:59

I have soup in hospital, before the ‘main mea’ but only because some meals are small and its at 5pm and you get nothing again till 8am

Iv had it so much in hospital, I cant bring myself to eat it at home,
As it reminds me of hospital

But going back to your question i think its normally a meal with some bread too

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 02/09/2021 18:00

Yes it's a meal. Just because it's liquidised doesn't mean it's not a meal.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/09/2021 18:03

So if you want a heavier meal, just have more of it. Many soups are indistinguishable from casserole or stew. The only difference is whether or not it is blended or possibly the size of the pieces of vegetables and meat in the food.

So to say that if the veg is cut up small it's lunch food and if they're in bigger pieces it's OK for dinner that's clearly nonsense.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 02/09/2021 18:05

I’ve had just soup and grated cheese for dinner for the last two nights. And again tonight! A go to for me. No bread or other accompaniments.

RightYesButNo · 02/09/2021 18:06

@CannaeRemember

Lovely home-made chicken soup filled with veg and accompanied by lots of luscious buttered bread is a very tasty meal. We're perfectly happy to have it for dinner and we're greedy buggars.
Well, to be fair, OP never said there was chicken in the soup, just chicken broth. OP, is there chicken in the soup? This would change my feelings a lot. I would want tons of fresh bread and butter on the side if there’s chicken. No chicken? It’s a veg soup starter (in chicken broth) and needs a doorstop.
waitingpatientlyforspring · 02/09/2021 18:07

With bread its plenty filling and we often have it for our evening meal.

QueenHofScotland · 02/09/2021 18:09

I sometimes make lentil or chicken soup for dinner with crusty bread. It’s more than adequate. And we have big appetites.

The chicken soup has chicken thighs veg and rice in it and is really filling

Trinacham · 02/09/2021 18:09

I had it as a meal today! Of course it is! Had it with crusty rolls.

StarryStarrySocks · 02/09/2021 18:09

Yes it's a meal. I'm more likely to have soup for dinner than lunch.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/09/2021 18:10

Surely you're not saying it has to have visible meat in it for it to be a meal?

I took chicken broth to be what you would do with the last of the chicken, so chicken stock, bits of chicken, then veg and broth mix, which is a mix of grains, lentils, peas so substantial.

3kidsinacar · 02/09/2021 18:11

@barbaraofseville gets combative again

What do you agree with barbs 🤔

icedcoffees · 02/09/2021 18:11

A plain bowl of soup (without bread, dumplings etc.) is not a proper meal imo - it's a light lunch.

But a thick soup filled with chunks of veg or meat, dumplings/croutons that's served with a side of bread is definitely a decent enough meal for me.

nonevernotever · 02/09/2021 18:13

I'm with you OP. Thick / chunky soup can be a meal on its own. Soup and a sandwich or two is definitely a meal :-)

I had soup for dinner both yesterday and Tuesday.
