Light-hearted disagreement between DH and me!

He says soup is not a meal; it's a starter. I think it can be either and definitely a meal when you include a sandwich.

Surely it depends on how —greedy— hungry you are and how big an appetite you have.

Of course soup can be a meal, if I cook broccoli and Stilton or leek potato and bacon (with or without the bacon,) I will serve with a bit of bread and I consider that to be a meal. But I have a relatively small appetite and have no desire to stuff myself with a massive meal at dinner time.

So for me it is a meal. And I currently have a jacket potato in the oven…

WomanStanleyWoman · 02/09/2021 18:15

Just because YOU have a small appetite, it doesn’t mean that anyone who has a bigger one is ‘stuffing themselves’.

TheWeatherWitch · 02/09/2021 18:16

Dh and I sometimes have soup for dinner (evening meal) but it’s always hearty, homemade and served with doorsteps of bread. sometimes the bread is homemade too!

A thin broth is no good though, it needs to be hearty with vegetables and pearly barley.

FlumpsAreShit · 02/09/2021 18:19

We occasionally have soup for dinner if we've eaten out for lunch or had a roast for lunch. Otherwise soup is a lunch generally.

But I too am surprised at how many 'soup is not a meal' proponents there are from a site usually full of under eaters.

nonevernotever · 02/09/2021 18:19

@AlternativePerspective I'm enormous and greedy (think there might be a link between the two possibly...) and I still think homemade chunky soup is a meal on its own :-)

Tulipomania · 02/09/2021 18:20

Soup is a meal, although I think it should include protein to qualify - whether that is plant-based or of animal origin.

Probably not the main meal of the day though, which may be more robust.

Good examples of soup-meals are:

French Onion Soup
Bouillabaisse
Chicken noodle soup
Mulligatawny
Fish chowder
Split pea and ham
Minestrone
Lentil

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/09/2021 18:21

@onlychildhamster

It's lunch or dinner for me. But I am very petite.
Same for me. But I am extremely fat.

It's as though it's a matter of taste and personal preference, not a defining characteristic of being teeny tiny.

FibroidFanny · 02/09/2021 18:21

@hellcatspangle

He feels the same way about jacket potatoes which I thought was madness.

A jacket potato on it's own isn't a meal...but as a side with maybe steak or chicken plus salad it is.

Oh I disagree, a jacket potato with tuna Mayo is definitely a meal!
BoomChicka · 02/09/2021 18:21

Soup is just a dip for bread, I'd rather have 2 slices of crusty buttered bread, a cup of tea and skip the pointless bowl of slop completely Wink

TillyTopper · 02/09/2021 18:23

Soup is definitely a meal for lunch, for not dinner! Unless accompanies by cheese on toast!

AlternativePerspective · 02/09/2021 18:25

TBH in all seriousness I think a lot of it is conditioning.

We’re conditioned to think of soup as a starter or a snack. people don’t think of it as a meal because we’re conditioned to think that you should have a certain type of breakfast, a certain type of lunch and then a cooked meal. Obviously not everyone, but a lot of us.

I remember my DP saying to me that I couldn’t have a baked potato for dinner or soup for lunch and then just cheese on toast or whatever for tea because his thinking that you should have a proper cooked meal.

And then I gave him soup for lunch and he realised that that actually filled him up, and when it came time for dinner he really didn’t need a huge cooked dinner as well..

He's right it's a snack/starter
FrankGrillosWrist · 02/09/2021 18:29

A meal can be whatever you want it to be. Sometimes you just don’t feel like much so the soup …. would be it. I couldn’t eat anything else after soup & a roll, that’s why I’d never have a starter. How these greedy bastards have many courses is beyond me. Everything’s black & white as usual with the MN sheeple.

Abitofalark · 02/09/2021 18:32

Sneaking in the sandwich like that is cheating! I've had soup for dinner once already this week. Thick vegetable soup. No bread or accompaniments. I might have munched a few walnuts afterwards.

PercyPiginaWig · 02/09/2021 18:33

Well, if I'm eating out soup is definitely a starter, I wouldn't be happy to go out and just have soup.

I could have a couple of bowls of vegetable soup in winter with bread and butter (and sometimes do) but I don't feel properly like I've had dinner. It would be okay for lunch.

A jacket potato and filling is fine for lunch sometimes but I'd probably be hungry soon after.

shouldistop · 02/09/2021 18:34

It's a lunch but not a dinner Smile

PattyPan · 02/09/2021 18:34

I probably wouldn’t have soup for dinner unless it was ramen, but soup is definitely a meal for lunch.

FuckingFabulous · 02/09/2021 18:35

@Anoisagusaris

Of course it’s a meal - lunch. But not one that would fill many people. And it’s definitely not dinner (unless you are on a very calorie restricting diet).
You can make soup out of chicken, potatoes, wine and a huge pot of double cream. Not exactly low in calories!
FuckingFabulous · 02/09/2021 18:37

@AlrightThereSkippy

God DAMN it. How am I losing this argument on Mumsnet, famed for its "my roast chicken feeds 75 people with leftovers" reputation GrinGrin?

The soup in question is definitely of the hearty variety and would come with a sandwich on homemade brown bread... Two sandwiches if you wanted. Hmmmm? Am I convincing anyone?

He feels the same way about jacket potatoes which I thought was madness. Now I'm questioning everything I ever believed 😱!

I make chunky chicken soup every so often. If it was eaten as a starter, there would be no room for a main course. My family have it with lots of heavily buttered bread and some cheese sprinkled in it. Nobody ever complains of hunger after a good bowl of that!
Florelei · 02/09/2021 18:39

I’d be raging if all I got for dinner was soup.

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 02/09/2021 18:39

We have soup for our main meal quite often, with some nice crusty bread. I find it very filling.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/09/2021 18:40
@barbaraofseville gets combative again

What do you agree with barbs 🤔
Logic and rational thought Smile. Sadly lacking from a few on this thread.

Those things are cooked, you'd hope. Is he concerned about the lack of vegetables? The soup could have loads of veg in, you could have some with breakfast, eg mushrooms and tomatoes on toast, or have fruit or veg as a snack. No danger of not getting his five a day.

chaosrabbitland · 02/09/2021 18:52

a bowl of soup is a meal to me , i feel full after just eating a bowl of it , just the 1 can and i dont have bread and stuff with it , mind you i havent got the greatest appetite , frequently go all day no eating and it not bothering me much , so i think im not quite the same as everyone else where they would not count it as a meal or it would have to have something extra with it , , dinner for me sometimes is toast , its all i can face sometimes

Snowpatrolling · 02/09/2021 18:53

My daughter often has chunky chicken soup for her tea! It’s enough for her!!

NoWordForFluffy · 02/09/2021 18:58

@Bimblybomeyelash

A soup and a sandwich is a different offering than just a soup! But whatever the bonus additions, I would never really fancy soup for dinner.
Yes. This is how I feel about soup too.
