Light-hearted disagreement between DH and me!

He says soup is not a meal; it's a starter. I think it can be either and definitely a meal when you include a sandwich.

A soup and a sandwich is a
different offering than just a soup! But whatever the bonus additions, I would never really fancy soup for dinner.

Mischance · 02/09/2021 17:06

Soup is a meal for me at any time of day, even without bread. As are jacket potatoes.

CannaeRemember · 02/09/2021 17:07

Lovely home-made chicken soup filled with veg and accompanied by lots of luscious buttered bread is a very tasty meal. We're perfectly happy to have it for dinner and we're greedy buggars.

doadeer · 02/09/2021 17:07

I think it's a meal. We often had soup for dinner growing up. Soup is very filling

MrsBungle · 02/09/2021 17:08

I agree it’s a meal if it has bread with it. I never feel satisfied having soup only.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 02/09/2021 17:08

@mustlovegin

Soup is not a meal and would not fill most adults up
Depends on a soup.😁 and i am fat greedy bastard.
megletthesecond · 02/09/2021 17:08

Yanbu. It's a meal if you have some bread on the side. I often have it for my evening meal.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/09/2021 17:09

Well tea for me tonight is tomato soup, made from the frozen odds and sods in the freezer, and fougasse bread.

I expect we will be full when we finish, as usual. It is a filling meal.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 02/09/2021 17:09

We have it as a main meal at least once a week, maybe twice.

DH is an ultra runner and finds it filling enough!

hellcatspangle · 02/09/2021 17:13

He feels the same way about jacket potatoes which I thought was madness.

A jacket potato on it's own isn't a meal...but as a side with maybe steak or chicken plus salad it is.

Foxmylife · 02/09/2021 17:13

Its a meal. Yes it can be a starter, but unless its small, very light, its too much.

Foxmylife · 02/09/2021 17:14

Of course it is!
AlrightThereSkippy · 02/09/2021 17:15

The jacket potato would have some sort of filling. Beans and cheese or tuna mayo. Sometimes hummus. Salad on the side.

The details in this discussion are crucial, CRUCIAL {bangs fist on table}

Now a jacket potato is a meal if it has salad, cheese, beans etc....vvv yummy.

MeltedCheeseonTop · 02/09/2021 17:20

It's like you're in our house OP! Our lives are going crazy again, and I've suggested that on the nights we are late back from kids activities, we try and have a large lunch, and then something like soup for dinner.

I agree usually, soup is not an evening meal, however, when we often don't get back until 9pm (no time to eat before going out) I feel it would be a quicker/more preferable meal. I have also suggested eggs, beans on toast, or jacket potatoes to be left with a lingering look of horror and fear.

P.S. Please don't anybody suggest a slow cooker, I have yet to cook anything in it that doesn't taste and smell disgusting! I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but whatever it is I do it VERY wrong. Whereas I can put soup in the soup maker on a timer and be veery happy with the results!

PurpleHydrangea1 · 02/09/2021 17:20

I absolutely love soup and eat it for lunch most days during the colder months.

We have it occasionally for dinner as well. Soup with homemade bread, and usually have crumble and custard for pudding!

GreenBeanMcGee · 02/09/2021 17:20

It's definitely a meal.

NoiceDifferentUnusual · 02/09/2021 17:21

Soup is a drink. If it’s chunky, it’s a stew.

AlrightThereSkippy · 02/09/2021 17:21

Yes! The lingering look of horror and fear is exactly what I get too!

liveforsummer · 02/09/2021 17:21

My soup is definitely a meal and not a light one either, especially with a large hunk of bread or three and cheese. Same with my jacket potatoes with ALL the toppings. A medium jp with cheese is lunch. Huge jp with lovely skin with cheese, tuna, sweetcorn coleslaw, beans and a massive varied salad = evening meal

idontlikealdi · 02/09/2021 17:22

Lunch or a starter unless it basically a stew

Ylvamoon · 02/09/2021 17:23

Thick Leek & Potato Soup with Sourdough Bread is a Saturday Dinner favourite!

cultkid · 02/09/2021 17:23

I used to cry when I had soup for dinner 🤣🤣

AdaColeman · 02/09/2021 17:25

French onion soup with plenty of bubbling cheese, or a proper minestrone with pasta, would certainly be a lunch here, even without a sandwich on the side.

AlrightThereSkippy · 02/09/2021 17:26

I think I would drive DH to tears if I served soup for dinner with no prior discussion! He looks as if I've suggested we eat the neighbours when I say "we could just have soup and sandwiches"
