Aibu to think that soup is a meal?

Light-hearted disagreement between DH and me!

He says soup is not a meal; it's a starter. I think it can be either and definitely a meal when you include a sandwich.

@VeganVeal

A tin of soup is a meal for 2 adults and 2 teens, with leftovers in this house
A meal and leftovers - is that all?! Gosh, I’d be completely stuffed for days after greedily slurping all that food but I’m very petite, short and thin and young looking.
HeronLanyon · 04/09/2021 07:37

mickarooni me too ! In fact I thought veganveal had been quite wasteful opening a tin for that small number of diners (not ‘lunchers’ I think).

3Br1tnee · 04/09/2021 07:38

My soups are definitely a meal.

MinesAPintOfTea · 04/09/2021 08:05

Definitely a meal. Pulses, meat, homemade stock all make it more filling.

Admittedly I usually have it for lunch because I can’t face endless sandwiches and salads.

I am wondering if the meal/not meal divide is between those who think of a tinned soup, or even cup a soup vs those who make their own. Cup a soup is a good post-exercise drink for cold days. Soup that has been in the slow cooker 3 hours and contains half the roast chicken leftovers is a meal.

I think it's a meal. After I had my DS I was encouraged to have soup and a sandwich.

But my DS and bf would not agree. My bf often has soup and then dinner if we are out.

You have more than one spoonful? You glutton.

SmokeyDevil · 04/09/2021 09:02

Soup is easily dinner, people just eat too much now.

Jacket potato is also a dinner meal.

AnnaSW1 · 04/09/2021 09:08

I also agree it's lunch not dinner

MrsClatterbuck · 04/09/2021 09:22

Here it's a light meal with sandwiches but a large bowl of seafood chowder with bread would be a meal in my books. A local restaurant does this as a main course.

MrsClatterbuck · 04/09/2021 09:24

Also I would never choose soup as a starter as it's too filling if having a main course. Mind it's usually what you get as a starter at weddings.

I believe so. Also the type of soup seems to be the divide. Thick blended vs broth and stuff in it

dayslikethese1 · 04/09/2021 10:23

Yes it's a meal. And so is jacket potato. I have both of these all the time for tea.

Depends on the type of soup, but definitely lunch and not dinner. If it’s smooth then it’s not a meal. If it’s chunky (not just veg, but also meat, tofu, grains etc) with a piece of bread then it’s a meal. It’s got to have a reasonable amount of protein to stop me from getting hungry soon after.

CutePanda · 04/09/2021 10:50

@EmpressSuiko

Its definitely a meal for me.

I only ever eat tomato soup, If I’m having it for lunch it will be half a can and a slice of bread but sometimes I’ll have it for dinner which is usually a whole can and 1/2 slices of bread.

Gosh I’m petite, underweight and young and I’d be STARVING if I ate only 1/2 a can of soup. So many people with eating disorders on MN!!
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/09/2021 11:23

Depends what sort of soup, and what sort of meal. For a light meal a thinnish sort of soup, e.g. Heinz tomato, plus a sandwich, would IMO be fine.

However esp. in colder weather I often make very thick, main meal soups, e.g pea and ham, or a veg one - just lots of different veg, plus red lentils/pearl barley, or both, added. They are very filling even without any bread. We usually have grated cheese on top too.

This thread is making my mouth water and I’ve screenshot several of your delicious soup ideas to make this autumn.

Soup is a meal, with or without bread, for lunch or dinner or a late supper.

JudgeJ · 04/09/2021 12:48

@PurpleDaisies

It’s a lunch meal. Not dinner.
Since I've been on my own, OH died last year, I will often have soup and a sandwich for lunch then want nothing in the evening except maybe a piece of fruit although my lunch is usually quite late, sometimes 4 pm if I've been in the garden and stayed in bed reading 'til 10 am.
Jerseygirl12 · 04/09/2021 13:18

I’d say no, I visited a relative and they did soup and bread and it didn’t feel like a meal.

HoppingPavlova · 04/09/2021 13:30

My soups are extremely hearty and all here agree a cup (we have it out of large soup cups), is more filling that our average main meals. We can’t eat it with a soup spoon, it’s way too chunky for that and will often include Asian dumplings or similar so we eat it with those Asian ladle spoons which does the trick. No need for bread with it here let alone sandwiches!
