Light-hearted disagreement between DH and me!

He says soup is not a meal; it's a starter. I think it can be either and definitely a meal when you include a sandwich.

No wonder people don't really like soups when they adding water. You don't do water. You add broth. Which is usually actually good on protein

Balonzette · 03/09/2021 12:19

It's an unsatisfying meal.

EmpressSuiko · 03/09/2021 12:40

Its definitely a meal for me.

I only ever eat tomato soup, If I’m having it for lunch it will be half a can and a slice of bread but sometimes I’ll have it for dinner which is usually a whole can and 1/2 slices of bread.

God DAMN it. How am I losing this argument on Mumsnet, famed for its "my roast chicken feeds 75 people with leftovers" reputation GrinGrin?

The soup in question is definitely of the hearty variety and would come with a sandwich on homemade brown bread... Two sandwiches if you wanted. Hmmmm? Am I convincing anyone?

He feels the same way about jacket potatoes which I thought was madness. Now I'm questioning everything I ever believed 😱!

Yes definitely agree. Especially with cheese on top, vegetarian nutritional yeast flakes...

And doorstep of good bread.

I make vegan soups for dinner a couple of times a week. They’re more like a stew I suppose but the recipe calls them soup.
I don’t think I’d want a tin of crap soup for dinner.

So actually you agree with him, if you think it needs to have a sandwich with it to be a meal, you don't think it's a meal on its own.

Was just about to say the same thing. And the only difference in vegan stew and vegan soup is how much you reduce the liquid off really. Very satisfying with some nice bread.
Mummasdiary2021 · 03/09/2021 13:00

Starter!

ShrikeAttack · 03/09/2021 13:16

When I make minestrone soup it contains onions, celery, carrots, courgette, cavolo nero, green beans, potatoes, garlic, diced pancetta, pasta, cannellini beans and chicken broth, grated parmesan on top.

How is that not a substantial meal?

WellLarDeDar · 03/09/2021 13:17

Soup and some really nice bread is one of my favourite dinners!

DotsandCo · 03/09/2021 13:19

My homemade soup is definitely a meal...for lunch OR dinner! It's thick and tasty and served with doorstep bread and butter. A meal!

VeganVeal · 03/09/2021 13:37

A tin of soup is a meal for 2 adults and 2 teens, with leftovers in this house

Soup isn’t much of a meal for a big active man. For a small woman it might be alright.

icelolly12 · 03/09/2021 14:17

Soup for a meal is rather depressing imp

longtompot · 03/09/2021 14:26

We have soup for dinner sometimes. Usually a parsnip soup or a peanut butter and butternut squash one, with buttered bread.

CorianderBee · 03/09/2021 14:33

Isn't it obvious that it depends on the amount?

Starter size soup is a starter - about half a tin.

Main sized soup is a meal - a full tin/bowl.

You can even have a mug of soup as a snack if you so desire it

CorianderBee · 03/09/2021 14:34

Jacket potatoes are definitely a meal though

ODFOx · 03/09/2021 14:40

Pho is a breakfast food. They don't serve it after 11am in Any hotel I've ever stayed in in Vietnam. Even the Pho counter in HoChiMin airport closes late morning.

Soup suitability is entirely dependent on the content and consistency of said soup and what it is served with.

Simple veg and a bit of bread, or a clear soup like chicken and noodle: lunch.

Proper minestrone with all the veg, all the meat and all the pasta, with half a stick of cheese garlic bread. Or Cock a leekie with all the meat, leeks and rice. Dinner.

CorianderBee · 03/09/2021 14:41

@ODFOx omg the breakfast pho that brings back memories. Delicious on a morning especially blowing the cobwebs off with the chilli.

Bun Bo Hue is better for lunch

Driftingblue · 03/09/2021 15:07

I have soup for dinner all the time. No sandwich required. I had no idea it didn’t count as a meal.

mrsbyers · 03/09/2021 16:34

It’s a meal here and often in the evening things like broth in autumn with bread and butter

Sounds lush.

Soup is a meal, in my opinion. I don't eat starters (to leave room for pudding), so what is the point of soup if it's not a meal??

Jacket potato is also a meal with some sort of protein and extra veg.

My exh would have rejected both as a meal - he liked things to be more complicated for me to make - he was a dick.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 04/09/2021 05:51

@PurpleDaisies

It’s a lunch meal. Not dinner.

It is a meal and depending on the soup can be a stodgy meal too.
