Covid Isolation Hotel Nightmare

Stuck in this London Isolation Hotel...food is terrible...if you are lucky to go out for exercise you are hurriedly sent back in as there is always a list waiting to go out and use the outdoor space which can safely have 4 people in at a time..i will add photos of food. Cost for 11 days £2285.

I asked today "Would they stop me if I wanted to leave?" Answer No..but you will be reported as an absconder and may face a £10,000 fine....Surely this is not voluntary nor is it fair...who is monitoring this system..we seam to be a forgotten minority rotting away behind fences..

I am coming back from Africa to bury my 99 year old father who died 1/08....and I couldn't have not gone...I had to see him through....Surely this is not voluntary imprisonment as without the hotel booking reference you are not allowed on your flight at the departure airport...

AIBU to feel aggrieved by the system..when i left England the hotel fee was £1750...when I went to book it had gone up £500....NHS nurse looked after British public throughout the Pandemic but I feel that I am incapacitated to look after my own..including my young kids...

Oh OP I'm so sorry for you and the situation you're in. Unfortunately I don't have any good advice for you but hopefully someone will be along soon

Bumping x

That does sound awful and I'm sorry about your father.

I think that we are all just used to things generally running smoothly and things being regulated. Now we are in this day by day situation where things are changing quickly and there has to be a degree of flexibility and flying by the seat of your pants.

I assume that the high cost of the Covid isolation hotels are to make people think twice about making unnecessary journeys. As well as covering the cost of course.

Nsmum14 · 24/08/2021 16:32

It's inhumane and unnecessary. Trust that you would isolate at home should be sufficient.

I am so sorry you are having to go through this, at great personal expense, after the death of your father. My condolences.

GaspingGekko · 24/08/2021 16:33

I realise this is too late for you now OP, but did you not have any option for an alternative route back?

All the Brits I know who returned to the UK this summer from red list countries went via another green list country. I know of people choosing Georgia, Greece, Spain, Ireland, spending 10 days there then return to the UK with no quarantine.

That said, what I've heard and seen of the hotels is absolutely shocking. It's criminal the level of treatment and the cost.

Unfortunately trusting people to do the right thing doesn’t work. People always think they are an exception to the rules for a little small thing, and then the virus spreads.
Nixandwotsit · 24/08/2021 16:46

What the hell is that breakfast??

MattHancocksSexTape · 24/08/2021 16:47

@Suppermumzy

Breakfast
Wtf is that?!
MauveMagnolia · 24/08/2021 16:47

I believe that you could have pre-paid to get it at the lower price after the announcement was made. Were you made aware of that?

jessycake · 24/08/2021 16:48

It's very wrong , you could have strolled through from somewhere else, it doesn't pay to be honest .

Amboseli · 24/08/2021 16:49

Yes what is that breakfast?!

CloudPop · 24/08/2021 16:49

It's an absolute disgrace. I'm so angry about it, it's totally unfair and not based on any proper evidence other than the obsession with the fabled Beta variant - which never even took hold in Africa, let alone anywhere else. I really feel for you OP.

FangsForTheMemory · 24/08/2021 16:50

Obviously you wanted to go to your dad's funeral. I understand the need for isolation in a hotel but someone is making a lot of money out of it and that food is disgraceful!

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 24/08/2021 16:55

Dreadful I am so sorry, and an impossible situation to be in. We decided to holiday in the UK this summer and it has been nothing short of extortion every step of the way. Covid seems to have been used as an excuse for highway robbery in so many ways. I have reached the point now where I don't want to go anywhere or do anything I've had so many bad experiences in the past few months.

Suppermumzy · 24/08/2021 16:55

@MauveMagnolia...I was in a remote African village no access to current News or internet until I went to book the hotel..and bang shock of my life..still haven't recovered...No email or any sort of correspondence!!!

And sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. After such a very sad time, being incarcerated like that is a real kick in the guts.

I’m so sorry for your loss and this isolation.

VyrnwyGirl · 24/08/2021 17:00

Awful way to treat people I agree @Suppermumzy

But WTAF is that breakfast?!

VyrnwyGirl · 24/08/2021 17:00

Sorry to hear about your dad too. Sad

ghostyslovesheets · 24/08/2021 17:02

I'm sorry for your loss - but we are in the middle of a pandemic and hotel isolation was a known thing - it's not great I agree but with new variants occurring it's necessary.

It was awful to see my loved one - with severe learning disabilities die alone on a ward, scared and in pain from covid - without us around them or to be able to celebrate their life as a family (or even hug at the funeral) - it's all really shit right now - but the more people follow the rules around isolation the quicker this might be over

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 24/08/2021 17:03

For that much money the service provider could at least sort out a decent breakfast. That’s disgusting.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 24/08/2021 17:03

I am so sorry for your loss. It's disgraceful how so many people have been treated and at such a large expense to themselves too, that really seems to add salt to the wound for me. The lunch looks OK- not healthy or anything but edible and certainly not worth the amount of money you are paying - but the breakfast looks disgusting! So sorry for you.

cabingirl · 24/08/2021 17:03

The cost - considering the food particularly is shocking - that and the prices for the testing services - there are some people making a LOT of money out of this pandemic.
