Covid Isolation Hotel Nightmare

Suppermumzy · 24/08/2021 16:18

Stuck in this London Isolation Hotel...food is terrible...if you are lucky to go out for exercise you are hurriedly sent back in as there is always a list waiting to go out and use the outdoor space which can safely have 4 people in at a time..i will add photos of food. Cost for 11 days £2285.

I asked today "Would they stop me if I wanted to leave?" Answer No..but you will be reported as an absconder and may face a £10,000 fine....Surely this is not voluntary nor is it fair...who is monitoring this system..we seam to be a forgotten minority rotting away behind fences..

I am coming back from Africa to bury my 99 year old father who died 1/08....and I couldn't have not gone...I had to see him through....Surely this is not voluntary imprisonment as without the hotel booking reference you are not allowed on your flight at the departure airport...

AIBU to feel aggrieved by the system..when i left England the hotel fee was £1750...when I went to book it had gone up £500....NHS nurse looked after British public throughout the Pandemic but I feel that I am incapacitated to look after my own..including my young kids...

Honestly, I would risk leaving.

Take LOADS of photos, document about the lack of freedom to exercise...it is utterly inhumane. Then go to the papers, IF you get fined, crowd-fund, myself and I'm sure thousands of others would all give a few pounds each..we'd soon get you to 10k.

Please, please rebel this. Or they will continue to treat people this way..it's about money and control, corruption at it's finest.

I'm so sorry for your situation and sorry for the loss of your dear Dad Flowers

WeAllHaveWings · 24/08/2021 17:52

@Suppermumzy

Breakfast
Is breakfast mince with 2 bread rolls? 🤮

Sorry for your loss OP, isolation on top of everything else must be awful, but the population has shown they ignore guidance so it is the only way to ensure isolation is complied with.

Your experience is hideous and it makes me so angry that people are profiting so much whilst providing the lowest level of food/hospitality. What day are you on?

Do you have things to occupy you? I'd be tempted to just clear my work backlog so I could relax when finally back at home if that's possible xx

MauveMagnolia · 24/08/2021 17:53

I don’t agree the price is a rip off, hotel prices have shot back up in the last few weeks. 11 nights at done if the hotels they are using would be more than the fee without the food, transportation and security.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 24/08/2021 17:55

@SarahBop that's a dangerous thing to say because you cannot guarantee people would help her pay the fine.

It really isn’t unacceptable, immoral or corrupt All basic needs are being met.

Have you seen some of the overseas facilities?

sleepyhoglet · 24/08/2021 17:56

What is the breakfast meant to be?

Peacrock · 24/08/2021 17:56

Lunch looks okay, but what on earth is breakfast? Haven't even seen anything like that in the hospital canteen!

Except they are being run by private companies who bid for the contracts to run these Covid hotels.

The only reason they would do that is to make a good profit.

I agree that the isolation is needed - people can't be trusted to do the right thing on their own as we have seen - but I disagree that a profit should be made.

One of the companies running some of the hotels is the same one that got the contract to outfit Boris' new Brexit planes. It's an Australian company with close contacts to the Tory party.

offyougotwantychops · 24/08/2021 17:59

Sorry about your dad Thanks
£207 per night is outrageous for that I'd expect to be in the Hilton with an indoor gym and swimming pool! I'd definitely be expecting better food than shite on a plate. It is outrageous, and since it's the government insisting that one goes to a hotel to isolate, then they should also be able to draw up laws which protect people from this abomination. Still my ranting won't help, but on all levels you have my sympathy (not sure it's a very useful thing to have though😂)

MauveMagnolia · 24/08/2021 17:59

@legosunqueen

That food is appalling for the price. Please copy the pics to your MP OP, this is profiteering...
The price doesn’t even cover the cost of the hotel room . It isn’t a rip off
MauveMagnolia · 24/08/2021 18:01

The government is paying the providers more than they receive from those in quarantine. The hotels were asked to bid a price for exclusive use as a quarantine hotel. Given they include 4 and 5 star hotels they must be getting a decent price.

Sonarl · 24/08/2021 18:03

I would leave you know and let's see if they've got the balls to take an African nurse in the NHS to court for non-payment of the fine. I'm quite sure a brief amount of crowd funding would get it paid even if you did have to pay it. No one should be forced to eat that breakfast.

Some people are in Hilton’s (no use of facilities), Sofitel, crowne plaza (some are in cheaper hotels)
NumberTheory · 24/08/2021 18:03

So you have crappy food for 11 days?

I think it could be better and the prices going up without plenty of notice is unreasonable. And there are some serious issues with women's safety that still don't seem to have been addressed.

But you're complaining about 11 days of crappy food and a bit of boredom which sounds, well, really childish. I get that your'e still grieving, but this isn't a productive way to focus that anger. You need to acknowledge it for what it is, not turn it on things that are inconsequential.

Starjammer · 24/08/2021 18:04

Christ, someone is making a fortune here aren't they? Charging that price and then serving food that Oliver would have turned his nose up at.

Sorry, OP, it sounds really rotten Sad

PurpleVerbena · 24/08/2021 18:05

You poor thing, OP, particularly regarding your dear father. How can they possibly give you such disgusting food - for that price in a mediocre hotel I would be expecting decent dinners at least, i.e. chicken or beef or fish. I have so many food intolerances, I would starve on that muck.

Suppermumzy · 24/08/2021 18:09

@MauveMagnolia...this hotel happens to be an ordinally 3 star hotel...hardly a 4 or 5 star....No gymn nor reasonable outdoor space for a walk...

While we are on the subject ...Dinner is just served..checkout my pudding...I never eat them I bin them..

IOP I'm so sorry about your dad.

I think part of the problem is that the hotels have to cover their costs. So, imagine you are a 100 bedroomed hotel. In August you usually charge £150 a night and your occupancy rate is 95%.

You offer yourself as a Covid Hotel. Your occupancy rate varies, but averages out at 70% You also have to provide lunch and dinner, and employ additional staff. You charge a higher price per night but don't actually make as much money.

The quality of food looks appalling and I would be tweeting photos of that.

Suppermumzy · 24/08/2021 18:10

But a 4 & 5 star hotel is only able to charge the prices they do because of the perception of quality you are getting in return for the cost.

It's not a hotel experience if you have to stay in your room for 23.5 hours a day for 11 days - eating terrible food with plastic cutlery, have to clean your own room and can't use any of the facilities which make the luxury hotel experience what it is.

If the government are also paying extra then that's a double rip-off - the quarantee and the tax payer are paying to make profits for these private companies - and the quality of that food makes it clear that there is no care about the welfare of the people quarantining.

NumberTheory · 24/08/2021 18:10

They probably aren't making anymore than they would if there was no covid. It costs money to put in place and follow the security and hygiene procedures necessary to make isolation effective.
MauveMagnolia · 24/08/2021 18:12

The hotels are not providing the food (not sure if any are) I believe some of it is from the companies that do airline catering (which it looks like).

CheeseCrackersAndChutney · 24/08/2021 18:15

There should be exemptions (not for isolating but certainly paying the fees) for people in your situation. Sorry for your loss Op

GreatestShowman · 24/08/2021 18:15

I'm very sorry for your loss OP.

As for the hotel isolation.. that is taking the piss. I don't know many people who could stump up that amount of money. Me and my family have had to save up for a UK holiday this year and that cost half the amount of your isolation hotel!

So what happens if somebody doesn't have the money to pay for it?! Confused

I won't say what I think the food looks like...

Bloody horrible.
