Covid Isolation Hotel Nightmare

Suppermumzy · 24/08/2021 16:18

Stuck in this London Isolation Hotel...food is terrible...if you are lucky to go out for exercise you are hurriedly sent back in as there is always a list waiting to go out and use the outdoor space which can safely have 4 people in at a time..i will add photos of food. Cost for 11 days £2285.

I asked today "Would they stop me if I wanted to leave?" Answer No..but you will be reported as an absconder and may face a £10,000 fine....Surely this is not voluntary nor is it fair...who is monitoring this system..we seam to be a forgotten minority rotting away behind fences..

I am coming back from Africa to bury my 99 year old father who died 1/08....and I couldn't have not gone...I had to see him through....Surely this is not voluntary imprisonment as without the hotel booking reference you are not allowed on your flight at the departure airport...

AIBU to feel aggrieved by the system..when i left England the hotel fee was £1750...when I went to book it had gone up £500....NHS nurse looked after British public throughout the Pandemic but I feel that I am incapacitated to look after my own..including my young kids...

Oh my days, that food is horrendous. Can you not even get just crisps or anything sealed?

I just think everything in the UK is a massive fucking rip off - because it is given to private companies (coincidentally many donate to the Conservatives? Angry) who have to make a profit instead of being done for a fair cost.

lannistunut · 24/08/2021 18:19

And very sorry about your father too Flowers

FamBae · 24/08/2021 18:20

YABU for feeling aggrieved at the system, it's in place to keep people safe and you were very aware of it when you (understandably Flowers) chose to leave the country; HOWEVER you are not at all being unreasonable for feeling aggrieved for being blatantly robbed.

Mistymountain · 24/08/2021 18:22

For the prices they're charging, they should at least be able to provide good food. The pictures look horrible. The whole scheme sounds like a complete rip off.

Peanutsandchilli · 24/08/2021 18:23

It's utterly disgraceful. I don't have any problem with people having to pay to isolate when they've come into the country, but I genuinely don't see how they can justify that cost! It's an absolute rip off. Do the hotels not have chefs that can at least provide something decent to eat?! That looks worse than the food they serve in prison. I really feel for you.

Sorry about your dad x

DoraDont · 24/08/2021 18:24

Sorry for your loss.

That dessert is kheer, actually very nice of you like milk based rice pudding style food.

It’s only eleven days, read a book.

Ireolu · 24/08/2021 18:25

That 'food' looks atrocious. I'm sorry OP. Hope it passes quickly. Sorry for your loss.

isthisareverse · 24/08/2021 18:25

@NumberTheory

So you have crappy food for 11 days?

I think it could be better and the prices going up without plenty of notice is unreasonable. And there are some serious issues with women's safety that still don't seem to have been addressed.

But you're complaining about 11 days of crappy food and a bit of boredom which sounds, well, really childish. I get that your'e still grieving, but this isn't a productive way to focus that anger. You need to acknowledge it for what it is, not turn it on things that are inconsequential.

I completely disagree.

We need to stand up against complete rip-off and businesses abusing the system.

I am not against isolation, but these is taking the piss, and not acceptable in a so-called civilised country. They can't charge you a fortune and deliver this shit hole in return.

Starjammer · 24/08/2021 18:25

@NumberTheory I was thinking more about the catering company serving that slop.

diddl · 24/08/2021 18:27

Maybe things have changed, but it was possible to leave isolation after 5days for a funeral-Prince Harry??

I watched my Dad's funeral by video link.

Nonicknamesforcatapillars · 24/08/2021 18:27

The only meal that looked even vaguely edible was lunch. What even was breakfast?

For over £2k for your stay you would have thought they could have provided you with some decent food. It’s about the only thing you look forward to in isolation.

I’m sorry you’re having to go through this OP.

MiddleClassProblem · 24/08/2021 18:27

Your dessert looks like payasam. It’s one of my dad’s favourites.

It looks like the hotel either have an Indian restaurant or more likely they are outsourcing to traditional Indian restaurants where food is cheap so they can get the extra income from isolation contracts.

Starjammer · 24/08/2021 18:29

Also that cost is what we are paying for a 4-star all inclusive with flights to the Canary Islands. I refuse to believe that's what it costs to put people up in presumably average accommodation and serve them shite. What expensive additional Covid measures are there when everyone is staying and eating in their rooms?

dyslek · 24/08/2021 18:29

At that money they could at least provide decent food.
Sorry for your loss. I hope the time passes quickly, it sounds awful.

gogohm · 24/08/2021 18:30

The price is already expensive, I would expect decent food for £200 a day, as a bare minimum cereal plus a cooked breakfast or continental selection (customers choice) sandwich, fruit, cake and crisps is fine for lunch but then a proper two course dinner eg what you find on a fixed price menu at a 3/4 star hotel/similar restaurant quality. I paid £140 a night recently in London, that leaves £60 for food!

FreshFreesias · 24/08/2021 18:30

It is an appalling and unnecessary infringement of your liberties but you won’t get any support from the putative Covid Marshalls on here, I’m afraid.

isthisareverse · 24/08/2021 18:30

and the room is not being cleaned daily, bed not changed...If nothing else the costs are obviously less!
MiddleClassProblem · 24/08/2021 18:31

Cross post with @DoraDont. Kheer and payasam are the same thing really.

isthisareverse · 24/08/2021 18:32

Some places allow deliveries (or used to), so at least you could get fresh food and something eatable - not a luxury with young kids, but I have read that some hotels are not allowing them. I hope it's not true in this country.

CourgetteGlutTony · 24/08/2021 18:32

@CheeseCrackersAndChutney

There should be exemptions (not for isolating but certainly paying the fees) for people in your situation. Sorry for your loss Op
No there should not be any exemptions for the fees. It is not appropriate for the tax payer to fund travel expenses, regardless of the reason for travel
maxbabi · 24/08/2021 18:32

I really feel for you its a bloody joke at our expense.
I bet the MP'S won't have to put up with that.
Delta is already here I don't get the need for quarantine.
Hasn't worked in oz or nz

gogohm · 24/08/2021 18:33

Pudding looks nice though, like kheer?

Peanutsandchilli · 24/08/2021 18:35

@MauveMagnolia where the heck are you getting that it doesn't even cover the room cost from? I've just checked the best room at a central London Travelodge (let's face it, that's the sort of hotel it is) and 11 nights, over a bank holiday weekend, with breakfast, is £1.5k. Someone is making a small fortune.

SlightlyJaded · 24/08/2021 18:35

That is outrageous.
Twitter and Press.

I really really would.
You are being robbed.

FreshFreesias · 24/08/2021 18:36

Raab didn’t have to put up with this when he flew back from Greece.
