Covid Isolation Hotel Nightmare

Suppermumzy · 24/08/2021 16:18

Stuck in this London Isolation Hotel...food is terrible...if you are lucky to go out for exercise you are hurriedly sent back in as there is always a list waiting to go out and use the outdoor space which can safely have 4 people in at a time..i will add photos of food. Cost for 11 days £2285.

I asked today "Would they stop me if I wanted to leave?" Answer No..but you will be reported as an absconder and may face a £10,000 fine....Surely this is not voluntary nor is it fair...who is monitoring this system..we seam to be a forgotten minority rotting away behind fences..

I am coming back from Africa to bury my 99 year old father who died 1/08....and I couldn't have not gone...I had to see him through....Surely this is not voluntary imprisonment as without the hotel booking reference you are not allowed on your flight at the departure airport...

AIBU to feel aggrieved by the system..when i left England the hotel fee was £1750...when I went to book it had gone up £500....NHS nurse looked after British public throughout the Pandemic but I feel that I am incapacitated to look after my own..including my young kids...

Someone I know shared photos of her food during her enforced quarantine hotel. It was dire. Not even crap hotel quality. For the money it's a bloody disgrace.

She did half way through her break go and ask for a vacuum cleaner and clean bedding and spent the afternoon cleaning her room.

Monkeytapper · 24/08/2021 19:31

Have I missed what the breakfast was?

Milkbottlelegs · 24/08/2021 19:34

@FreshFreesias

Raab didn’t have to put up with this when he flew back from Greece.
Why would he? Greece isn’t on the red list.

Jesus Christ🤨 you may want to namechange after that comment.

why? Get off your high horse, it's perfectly legitimate to expect "traditional" food from your own country/culture in your own country.

Even better, to offer people some kind of choice, to cater for the multicultural inhabitants stuck in these expensive hotels.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 24/08/2021 19:36

OP, I'm really sorry for you. That looks shocking.

There is no reason that food selection isn't available and all options should be of a good standard.

Your pictures look at best, really awful microwave meals. At worst, slop.

Honestly, if people no longer have to isolate for close contact with a positive case, what is the point of this enforced, expensive isolation?

cabingirl · 24/08/2021 19:37

The problem is the lack of transparency because it's outsourced to private companies - it's not clear who is being paid what and who is being paid to provide what.

How much are the hotels getting for providing the rooms, how much is the catering contract and who is providing that, who is providing the security, who is providing the transport?

How did they come up with the figure they are charging the 'customers'

Who is doing quality control checks across all these different hotels?

You cannot compare this to a regular hotel experience because there is no choice here for the people involved. There isn't even an option to opt out of the food they provide and get a refund to go towards ordering your own food.
@JesusIsAnyNameFree= why on earth would I change my username? Look, the vast majority of people in this country are born and bred 'British' and by that I mean no connection with any other country. Why should we be forced to eat food which has no connection with OUR culture?
What exactly is 'British' food, out of interest?

olidora63 · 24/08/2021 19:37

So I have friends who are holidaying abroad and they are coming home and self isolating at home …and yes they are being trusted to do that . Why do people think that it’s ok for them to do that and yet the OP is expected to pay a high price for what sounds like degrading conditions?
OP I am actually ashamed that you are having to put up with this and the UK government think it’s ok …and as for the food 🤮

isthisareverse · 24/08/2021 19:38

If you were moaning about a French breakfast you'd be mad but no one would play the fake outrage at "racism.

Even if it's just about milk in your tea or coffee while the French drink their black.

just look at a school or hospital menu if it's that hard.

Most places manage to offer toast or cereals, milk and fruit juice for breakfast- and no fish soup or other, which might be delightful in Vietnam but a bit of a shock when you are not used to them when you wake up.

I agree. I think the hotel quarantine thing was introduced too late (perhaps it would have helped earlier on) and is a waste of time.

PurpleVerbena · 24/08/2021 19:42

@DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo - it means no chinese, no indian, no thai, no japanese, no italian - just normal 'English' food, such as roasts, cottage pie, fish pie, grilled fish, lots of puddings, scones, crumpets, etc.

SlightlyJaded · 24/08/2021 19:42

The issue with the food isn't that it's 'non British'. It's that it looks like slop with no fresh ingredients. It's also that it seems to be exclusively Asian/Indian.

Curry - fine
International Cuisine - Yes please.

But not exclusively.
And not slop served in a plastic tray.

For the money, you should have a choice of at least three dishes and side salads and fresh fruit served with every meal.

Honestly. I'll say it again, twitter and press.

This isn't about the rights and wrongs of isolation, it's about people making money on the back of misfortune.

Remember then food boxes that were sent to families who were eligible for free school meals. Slices of cheese, a loaf, a tin of beans and a couple of other bits that was supposed to feed for a week? A few shared photos on social media soon shamed the supplier into upping their game.

DonnaDonna01 · 24/08/2021 19:43

People have been trying to highlight how bad these hotels are for sometime. For some reason the major media outlets are keeping well away from reporting on it. Would Boris or his colleagues be happy to stay in a hotel like this? Oh no wait they don’t have to like the foreign dignitaries who have visited in previous months; no hotel quarantine.

Username7521 · 24/08/2021 19:44

Hi OP
I’m so sorry for your lost. Not sure if you know but there is a WhatsApp support group (started by South Africa’s) but I think everyone can join. You’ll join a group for your hotel and people on it are experiencing the same thing. I know recently all the residents got together and complained about the food and things did improve.
Let me know if you want the details
So sorry for your loss xx

YanTanTethera123 · 24/08/2021 19:44

The food looks disgusting to me, no fresh vegetables or fruit for a start. I cannot eat spicy or highly flavoured foods so presumably I would be expected to go without?

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 24/08/2021 19:44

What exactly is 'British' food, out of interest

Presumably it's tasteless mash without a hint of butter or spices, some dry chicken, a couple of overdone carrot sticks and some peas? Just like my MIL loves 😂
I am British btw, before anyone thinks otherwise.

The English national dish is tikka masala by the way. Just putting that out there.

Well that sounds bloody horrific.

Are you kidding me? Are you aware of how racist that is?

'Born and bred' British people come from all sorts of cultures and backgrounds. Britain is a multi cultural society.

Many British people eat spicy food, noodles, rice, marinated food, etc as their staples.

If you mean : why don't they offer fish and chips, sausage and mash, roast beef, etc, you're from a different era.

They should offer CHOICE and quality. And ideally, food that is identifiable,

And poor OP is paying through the nose for this.

Hoppinggreen · 24/08/2021 19:46
@MiddleClassProblem - I am sure it is a popular dish in some cultures, but they really should not be providing such food to British people stuck in a rubbish hotel for 2 weeks. Surely they could tailor to British tastes? I wouldn't eat that.
What are British tastes?
I’m British, what are my “tastes” then?

Not all of us can tolerate spices, onions and garlic. You know, some of us have stomach and bowel issues. I can't eat peas, carrots, onions, tomatoes, basil, oregano, red meat, shellfish and that's just the start. Be thankful you can.

Covid - making millionaires since 2020.

Turtles4543 · 24/08/2021 19:47

I just found out a friend went to a wedding knowing he had covid. It really brought it home to me why we need these rules. Some people are ridiculous/ dangerous.
