Disgustingly Filthy

I spilt something on a canvas bag - decided to clean this and a pile of other soft rucksacks, laptop bags, etc.
Chucked them all in the bath with some pre-wash soaker, and they're now in the washing machine. The colour of the water in the bath was revolting - and I'd been carrying these bags around with me - YUK
They didn't look dory - but obviously carting round in city grime, etc.
I occasionally throw lightweight totes in with the washing - but how does everyone else keep this kind of stuff clean? - and how often?

Why don't you just buy 30 at the start of each month and incinerate the bag after one use.

It's the only way to be sure

Dog hair and dried drool in aristo’s ancient and battered Range Rover - very much to be admired and approved of.

Any hint of less than immaculate cleaning in those of us that aren’t ‘old money’ (a beloved phrase on here) - mingling, ewww, gross, rank, etc.

I’m mortified on behalf of the posters who have ‘wash bags for life’ in the schedule every single week and obviously think it’s normal and dare I say even aspirational?! 😂

I wash my cotton tote bags regularly. They’ve been sitting on the floor in cafes etc. I hate to see dirty shopping bags. 🤢

Yep, team sloven all the way! I have far more more important things I'm neglecting than the state of my shopping bag.

Why worry about a dirty purse? Worry about the dirty money you put it it! You have absolutely no idea where those coins have been 🤣🤣

To me extreme judgement of others screams low self esteem. If you want to wash your bags fine, but I really can't muster up any energy to care about how hygienic someone else's tote bag is. And I don't think I've ever even looked at someone else's purse!

One thing that is puzzling me is how to wash a rucksack, how does it fit in the washing machine? I wash my fabric tote/shoppers but never a rucksack!

I've never ever washed my rucksack and I've had it for 9 years. Other than spot cleaning, it would never occur to me to bother.

Dirty shoes? I've got mud on my site boots that's probably 7yo. Not much point in cleaning muddy boots before going to the next muddy site as they live in a carrier bag in my car.

Who the fuck puts their shopping bags through a washing machine? All those plastic particles, so bad for the environment, the water course and yes even the sewers. Oh look - you can judge people for anything.....

Phew! Just this. I like to judge folk on their behaviour towards others rather than how often they wash their bag.

No one eats off their rucksacks or trainers. All shoes are dirty whether they look clean or not, they go on the floor. Same with pushchairs, high chairs and carseats, they are all disgusting

How big is your rucksack? Or how small is your washing machine?
I've got an old hygge rucksack for dog walking, it's not so big. Maybe slightly bigger than a childs school rucksack. It goes in the washer on its own. Well the three times I've bothered up to now.

It took an entire global pandemic for some people to not only learn how to wash their hands but for some people to even start washing their hands at all!!

There is no equivalence between regularly washing your hands and regularly washing your back pack!

Ever been at the supermarket and someone pulls out a purse that looks like they dug it up from landfill? Gross. The same with mobile phone covers.

Let’s not even start on shoes either, some people were dragged up.

Low self esteem? No probably just have high enough self esteem not to aorry about what judgy people think about a bit of dirt

Ironically looking down on people is a huge sign of low self esteem because it's an attempt to make yourself feel better by judging others and finding yourself better than them.

I don't post here often, but now I'm in a dilemma and need advice from you MN diehards

Should / Must I wash my cloth shopping bags after every use?
If yes, at what temperature and with which detergent?
If yes, with or without fabric conditioner?
Do I then put them in the dryer with / without a dryer cloth?
If no, do I hang them up (with matching clothes pegs) and let them dry in beautiful sunny weather? (Definitely NOT over night because they will get darked on and covered in spider willies, which would mean having to start the whole process over again.
Please help me, I thought I had my life pretty much under control and now I am in an absolute turmoil! How will I sleep tonight without answers to my burning questions?
